InactiveAnother connundrum-For the first time in over a week, Ian’s been doing better-very good actually-Prevacid seems to have kicked in again and our smiley, playful, and fun loving little boy is back-literally overnight. No screaming fits in two days and SLEEPING through the night again! Not that I want to jinx myself but…
Here’ the problem though. When he felt crappy after a switch to prilosec and erythomycin last week, he screamed, woke up every hour crying during the night, and had classic reflux symptoms (arching, etc) BUT, he ate. Ate a lot -35 oz a day actually-although a lot of spit up which did bother him. My dh and I are 100% sure he was eating out of comfort. So now that he’s feeling better, we’re getting bottle refusal again..Help me! I cannot for the life of me figure this out! Why when he feels better does he stop eating! I know he had ulcers on endoscopy a couple of weeks ago while on Prevacid, but he had croup and apparently a stomach virus with a week of projectile vomiting prior to the proceedure so we really think they came from that…Also, another concerning thing-Ian’s almost 6 months and we notice that although he used to talk a ton at 4 months, he really kind of stopped when he started bottle refusing 6 weeks ago…is this related? Am worried about speech delays but could be overreacting.
Does anyone have any ideas on what this is? Or how to prevent a feeding aversion problem again (he’s finally gaining weight for the first time in weeks)..Our GI has kind of deserted us saying she thinks we should go see someone else as she keeps making him feel worse and has no clue what’s wrong with him and he’s not a “textbook” case (thanks a lot btw!).
Also, we start solids next week -any suggestions for sensitive bellys what food to start (I have that Hall list…).
Thanks all.

OH MY GOD — what? Cannot believe the GI said that. I think that she is the youngest one in the practice, right? Why don´t you get her to introduce you to Sokolowe for example?? SHe is not alone in that office!!
As for the eating — sorry, no tips. Just came back from psych appointment and will post under feeding (don´t know what to think of it).
As for the babbling — DO NOT WORRY. Matthew spent about a month saying NOTHING. He would not make a sound. Well, coincidentally, yesterday, he was doing gaga and caca etc sounds… my ped told me it would be a phase.
So hard , isn´t it? I am so sorry you too are going through this. Is there a concern about his weight?

InactiveHi Tracy. So strange that he’s feeling better but not eating again. I
do know that Marisa used to be a TOTAL comfort eater before we got her
reflux and allergies under control – she ate WAY more as a newborn than
she does now. When you say bottle refusal, how much is he taking in? At
the height of her problems, M used to eat 35-40 ounces a day. Then she
went down to 20-28. Now we’re right about 23 plus a little solids. As for solids, maybe you should hold off until the other issues are
better under control? Aren’t you seeing the allergists at Mt Sinai
soon? There is no need to start right at 6 months – after a failed
early start we waited until 6.5 and have been going REALLY slowly.Maybe banana would be a good first food for Ian when you are ready?
Both Marisa and Tyler (BreektysMom) have had good luck with them
despite many food sensitivities. I puree a very ripe organic banana (I
use about 1/3 of the banana) with a little water (you could also use
formula) and serve it that way since Marisa freaks about lumps if you
just mash it up. Given Ian’s past history, I’d skip grains for now if I
were you. Bananas are also good because they act as a mild natural
antacid.I still can’t believe Dr. M said that. Have you talked to her since?
Did you double check with her about the possibility of esophageal
thrush? As for speech delays – try not to worry. I think all babies go through
periods of “talking” more and less. Thais posted about something
simliar about a month ago I think. I know that around 3-4 months Marisa
was talking a TON and then slowed/stopped for a while and now is
babbling a lot again. In her case, the slowing/stopping seemed to
correlate with other skills -she was learning to roll, creep, sit, etc.I’m really glad he’s sleeping and not screaming!

InactiveTracy, oddly when Hailey is feeling her best, she also does not eat much. We’ve started to rationalize that maybe BECAUSE she is eating less, there is less to reflux, ant that makes her feel better. Not sure if it’s the same with Ian, but just thought I’d throw the thought out there.
As for being abandonned by your doc, ours did the exact same thing. She was also young, and very kind. When we last saw her and Hailey was screaming and projectile vomitted all over her (at the beginning of January), she also told us that she was going to refer us to a specialist elsewhere because Hailey was getting worse and was a complicated case. When I asked to book our next appointment they said “don’t bother. your file is closed”. We’ve been on a wait list now for 3 months with our appointment finally coming next week. So I know how you feel. I too felt abandonned.
Hope you figure things out. Good luck.

InactiveI know!! Frankly I can’t believe she tried to get rid of us either! Thais-I thought the same exact thing-why can’t she talk to Sokolow then since she’s supposed to be so talented? Wouldn’t that be the next step if you’re confused. Actually I think I’ll bring that up next time. I did meet the third dr. there-Dr. Rosencrantz. But really didn’t gel with him at all. He completely dismissed us and then I went back into see Moon after Ian stopped pooping for almost two weeks. Sorry you’ve had to go through it as well Lori. Hopefully your upcoming appt will help!
I agree with eating less when reflux is controlled and the comfort issue. But I just hope it doesn’t stop altogether like last time. He got down to under 10oz a day and looked like he felt fine. Also, he’s doing the wriggly, gassy thing during feeds again so I don’t think it’s taste, do you?? Confusing! He’s pooping fine becausing finishing antibiotics-too well actually.
I’ll try not to worry too much about solids or babbling…yet…
His weight gain actually is an issue-He lost over a pound in one month so want to see it go up for awhile if possible. I’ve pulled him from daycare for now and once viruses are at bay, I’m hoping he’ll continue to eat something. At least until he starts sitting/crawling then may put him back in. Am trying to work from home (boss talked me into it) but it’s MUCH harder then I thought. I’m completely unfocused and feel like I’m not doing either job right.
He’s playing right now in exersaucer and having a grand time! This part is wonderful!

InactiveI would definitely ask her to introduce you to Sokolowe and just check
about the thrush issue – when are you speaking with her again? How much is he eating at this point?
I also work from home but I don’t really get much work done. Luckily I
have a partner (I’m a real estate broker) so we split a lot in terms of
work load and hours and it’s really flexible. But most of my day is
spent with M. Maybe try to cut back on the work and just do a little
bit for now?March 21, 2006 at 10:08 am #4347Anonymous
InactiveGee what a not nice ped gi! So unhelpful!
I know with Isaac he has never really eaten a lot since his reflux was under control. He never ate more that 20 oz a day! My ped just said that some babies need less than others.
March 21, 2006 at 10:31 am #4351Anonymous
InactiveHard to say exactly what he’s eating right now-up until yesterday 35oz-will gauge today. I’m not worried about going down to 20-24oz but 10-15oz again is not acceptable. Just want to kind of nip it in the bud.
Definitely trying to relax about working so much. I’m terrible though with guilt. I feel so loyal to my employer as he’s been terrific. Also, we’re a really small company, and I’m the biggest revenue generator and I know he hurts when I’m not at full capacity. And, if I keep the job working from home and not as productive, then he can’t afford to hire someone in my place. I really wish we could make a clean break, but financially, I’m torn. It’s really hard in NYC to live on one salary isn’t it? We’ve crunched numbers every way possible..
As far as the thrush-I’ll mention it when I talk to her, but I don’t feel the need to make a call just for it. It should have shown up on the endoscopy if that was the case and it really is very uncommon dealing mostly with the immune system and we did all those blood tests showing that Ian’s immunity was perfect. Not ruling it out completely but seems farfetched? But keep the ideas coming-I always appreciate it!
THanks again.

InactiveTracy – didn’t you say that his IGA levels were extremely low? I don’t
know much about that, but does that point to an issue with allergies
and/or immunities? Maybe Stacy or Christine or someone else familiar
with this issue can shed some light?Yes, it’s VERY hard in NYC on one salary. Lucky DH makes a very good
living for now and my salary was always commission based so hit or
miss. Last year I made a lot and that helped but this year it won’t
even be half. But you know, it’s hard anywhere – yes our rent or
mortgages may be higher – but you don’t have car expenses, real estate
taxes, etc. All a trade off – but we couldn’t live anywhere else!March 21, 2006 at 11:22 am #4356Anonymous
InactiveDoctor told me IGE (not IGA) levels were low which she said was a good thing because that meant likelyhood of allergies wasn’t there. Unless she’s wrong and that’s not right?? IGA levels and other gammagloblin levels were all perfect.
It is hard everywhere for sure. But actually, we look at jobs where we grew up in our professions all the time, and can you believe we’d get raises if we moved back! Isn’t that crazy, in Massachussetts(home), my husband’s job alone would go up 20k a year. Being in recruiting, I definitely see how the economy is still not where it needs to be. Too much temptation here to eat out..hee.

Yes, for allergies, they test for IGE. The blood tests do not say much at this age, but you are right, the endo should have taken care of thrush (my ped told me that it is something really easy to see) and also the biopsies should have shown something i think.
I hear you on the job front… i have no idea when i will be back to work and if i do whether it will be part time or in a different position or the same place (but the hours are just awful). So, we have decided to move out to westchester… can get a lot more space for the money, matthew will have a really tiny yard, but a yard and if i do not go back to work, i have some friends there and we will all hang out (vs spending money in manhattan i hope!!)…
I am sorry you are gonig through this — eating should be a reflex for everyone (or so i thought for a long time)
March 21, 2006 at 1:01 pm #4364Anonymous
InactiveAh, I didn’t realize you said IGE levels, not IGA – yes, if his IGE number was low that is a good thing.
See for us, DH gets more here than he would elsewhere (Wall Street bond
geek) and I make more also because the real estate market here is
strong. But I know what you’re saying. We watch a TON and could
probably use a bigger apartment but at least M has a very small bedroom
and that’s enough space for now and luckily I
love to cook (making marinated cod filets and mashed potatos tonight).
We both just aren’t suburb people (even though I grew up there) and
really do take advantage of the city – it’s a tough decision either way!knb182006-3-21 13:2:55

InactiveOh, to dream of a backyard! I long for space and trees! Congrats!
Thais-Did it take you long to see Mt. Sinai allergy team? I have to wait 3 months! Who did you see? Was it worth it??
Tracy
March 21, 2006 at 2:53 pm #4367Anonymous
InactiveI did not have to wait because Matthew was hospitalised for dehydration and we requested to see them before we left. We saw Dr Sokolowe or something like that … same pronounciation but different spelling than the GI (what a coincidence). They did the RAST test and Ige where really low as well, but they explained to us it means nothing in a baby… can be a false positive. They came and talked to us and were really really nice but they really did not have much to add. They said we could test again at 9months i think and see if something comes up. Sorry you have to wait 3 months, but the guy that heads the team is supposedly the best there is (DH´s dad is an allergologist as well and he told us he would be the best person to see).
Yes, we need space. We love our apartment and it does have a small patio but i grew up outside of Madrid and used to play on the street and would love for Matthew to have the same opportunity. It is a hard decision though… i am a city girl but we needed some more space and some room for my parents and siblings to come and visit etc…

InactiveTracy, I know it’s hard to be abandonned by your doc (I was not happy when they did it to us), but she should at least refer you elsewhere, and help you to bypass the wait list- especially if there’s a more experienced doc in the same practice!!! In retrospect, I decided that it was actually good that our doc ditched us- Though she was so nice, Hailey wasn’t getting better, and really I didn’t want someone treating Hailey who was admitting that they didn’t have the expertise to help her. Good luck to you guys.
I also want to ask (embarrasingly) as I’ve never been to NY except Buffalo, are there not houses in the city? Sorry if this sounds stupid but in Toronto of course there are lots of highrises downtown, but there are also houses, they just have somewhat smaller lots then in the city.
