InactiveHey all,
Well it’s 5 in the morning and I’ve had no sleep.
Fun! Here’s the skinny: Kate is thriving, gaining, eating, happy, giggly, meeting her milestones, you know, the amazing baby that with medication is happy happy happy! She just nurses all through the night and is nowhere close to sleeping through the night. My gut says it’s not reflux because she’s super happy,no problems feeding, she just nurses sooooo much more during the night than during the day. During the day she’ll go 3-4 hours which is normal right? Well at night it’s usually two!!!!! I think this is just maybe a habit I’ve created for her because she never nurses very long and I’m wondering if she’s just in the habit of having me nurse her back to sleep but I’m sooooo tired! My sleep is so interrupted and I’m thrilled she wants to nurse because for so long she never wanted to. I guess I just need some reassurance here that if she’s happy,it’s not reflux.
Reflux has just made me sooo paranoid as a mother it drives me crazy. It’s like the possibility of reflux rearing it’s ugly head again is always in the back of my mind. Ugh. Anyway, anything you all have to say would be amazing. Thanks for being there!

Inactivehmmm… it could be that she is going through a growth spurt and actually needs to nurse, but you’ve also added in solids, so I would think that would help with that. Is she nursing for a long period at night? Emptying the breast? Is she obviously hungry or is she just wanting you to help her back to sleep?
From your description, it sounds more like habit than hunger or reflux to me. But that’s just my opinion. You would know better being there. At her age, she should be able to go longer than 2 hours at night, so you may, unfortunately
have to get a little tough with her.If you are up to it, I would make sure she is getting all that she needs during the day, and then start trying to wait a bit when she cries at night. Don’t go right in, but let her cry for a little (not sure how you feel about this. This is just my opinion). I did this with Ben.. just let him fuss for a few minutes, and if he was still going, I would go in and try to help him back to sleep other ways.. rocking, shushing, paci, etc.It sounds like she just doesn’t know yet how to go to sleep on her own. Does she nap short too? If so, that’s probably what’s going on.There are all sorts of sleep training books out there, if you think this is what you want to do. I don’t advocate CIO, but, of course, a little crying is going to be necessary.I’m sure others will have much to offer too.September 28, 2007 at 3:14 pm #43450Anonymous
InactiveClaire,
I am so sorry you are going through this. Naomi may be right that she is going through a growth spurt, but she also could be nursing out of habit. Cooper was down to taking only 4oz over night but since his ear infection about 2 months ago we are up to 8oz over night. I used to be able to hold him off to eat until 3-4am and now he is up like clockwork between 1:30-2am for his bottle. I do notice however that when he eats, I can hear his tummy grumble which makes me think he truely is hungry b/c if not I don’t think I would/could hear that and luckily the rest of the night before and after the bottle are usually paci or rock back to sleep ( i was up 6 or 7 times last night including his feeding which is pretty normal for us), so remember that you are not alone in your lack of sleep, we are btter than we were before , but still no where near sleeping through the night, I figure we will get there when he is 5 or so, if it happens before I will be so happy!! (only kidding, I hope he sleeps before then). Take naps when she does even if it is only for 30 min at a time, that can add up…. I will send some sleepy vibes your way.September 29, 2007 at 1:39 pm #43495hellbennt
Keymasterwell…you have many options
from taking her into bed with you (co-sleeping)to full blown CIO (cry it out) tomany many options in between these two!you could let her cry her weight in minutes, you could let her cry one minute, or two minutes….or no minutes, LOL!you could go in and pick her up, you could go in & not pick her up….LOL!!!there’s a broad spectrum of what you can do & none of it is ‘right’- it’s all what feels ‘right’ for YOU
‘gentle’ sleep books:and here’s a thread with more sleep suggestions (I have a post here- look for the purple post, LOL)hang in there!~lauraSeptember 29, 2007 at 3:56 pm #43499Anonymous
InactiveSomeone may have mentioned this, but are you nursing first during the day and then doing the solids? I’ve found that if I let Landen do solids first, he won’t take much formula during the day (maybe it had more calories he needs than the ‘solids’- same with your Breastmilk) and then he’s up asking for formula at night. just a thought. I’d let her nurse til content, then see how much fruit/veggie she’ll eat, since she still needs most of her calories during the day from you
