InactiveHi all!
I’m a mother to 6 month old twin boys who both have reflux. They don’t spit up as much but they refuse the bottle after several ounces which leads to arching, screaming and lots of crying so obviously they are in so much pain. They have silent reflux. Feeding them has been really stressful and with two you can just imagine how much stressed I am. Anyhow, they are on 7.5 mg of prevacid solutabs 2x daily. We’ve seen a ped GI doctor who offers no other solution but to offer smaller more frequent feedings. She said that the boys are currently on the maximum dose of prevacid and that there are no other medications that can be prescribed for babies. We are scheduled to see another ped GI this week and hopefully will give us a different spin on this issue. My question is: I’ve noticed (as I was lurking) that there are a lot of you who give your kids more than this, i.e. taking prevacid 30 mg instead of 15 mg. When did your docs increase the dose and what happened to make them increase the dose. Right now my boys are gaining well only because I try to have finish the bottles but I;m scared they will develop some oral aversion. My other question is: Did any of you have instances where prevacid stopped working and then had to switch to another med and worked eventually?Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance!MarieSeptember 28, 2007 at 1:16 pm #43441Anonymous
InactiveHi Marie and welcome!

I’m so sorry to hear that your little guys are having problems with reflux. It must be so hard with twins! Are you giving the solutabs on an empty stomach followed up with a meal 30 minutes later? If you are, then it sounds to me like they probably need a higher dose. Have you seen http://www.marci-kids.com? It has a lot of good info on reflux meds and dosing. Some people have had success with printing the info off and faxing it to their doctors to get a higher dose. Good luck with the new doctor! I hope he/she is more willing to listen to you and try a higher dose.

InactiveHi and welcome,
Cooper started on 7.5mg/day at 11wks, then at about 14weeks we went to 7.5mg 2x/day and then at I think 16 weeks, I asked our ped GI for 7.5mg 3x/day and he said no, but that I could try 15mg 2x/day for a week and see how that went. Well I had a brand new baby and we had an appt with our general ped and I told her what we were doing and since dh and I are both in the health professions, she wrote the script for us. I know that most people aren’t that lucky, but you can give Zantac or Axid with the prevacid, I think you just need to space it 4hrs apart or something like that. Or go to the marci kids website and have info in hand for this new doc to see if they will increase the dose, it does sound like they need it.September 28, 2007 at 4:19 pm #43453hellbennt
