InactiveJust curious… at 19 mths old, how many naps a day is/was your little one taking? And for how long at a stretch?
Here’s my situation:For most of the summer, I was keeping Andrew awake in the AM while taking Elizabeth to swim classes, or grocery shopping, etc. He would nap for a couple of hours around noon/1 PM, but in general wasn’t getting enough sleep (we realized after the fact) and it showed in his frustration levels.Once we realized that, about 2 months ago, I started waking him at 8:15ish, napping him from ~11-1, napping my daughter from 2-4 PM, napping Andrew again from ~5-6 PM…and never leaving the house since someone was always asleep! (Bedtime for both by 9 PM.) That worked well for Andrew and seemed to lessen his frustration levels. He willingly took those naps without crying or a bottle. By the way, he is still waking 2-3 times a night with some sort of pain – not reflux I don’t think, but I’m guessing intestinal gluten-gas pain or teething pain. I’m too sleepy to analyze it – I just nurse him back to sleep if I can’t soothe him any other way.Lately, though, I’ve gotten so tired of always having one of them awake and never having any quiet time for paying bills, doing my part-time home business computer work, etc. So I’ve been letting him sleep till he wakes around 9-9:30, holding him off for a nap until around 2 PM and putting them both down at the same time. Most days he seems OK with that, although some days I can tell that he really should be in bed around 12:30ish. Now that I’ve been doing that for a few days, it seems hard to imagine trying to get him to bed for a morning nap again. Yet, if I give an earlier nap (12:30ish) then he isn’t ready for a second nap, yet an earlier bedtime doesn’t work with our family’s evenings. Thanks for letting me ramble. And thanks for any thoughts you might have about your little one’s naps. I don’t remember how old Elizabeth was when we switched her from two naps to just one. (And as far as I’m concerned, she’ll be taking a nap – or having an afternoon rest period – until she is ‘old and grey’!)
Thanks,DianneDianne 2007-09-28 23:33:02 September 29, 2007 at 10:36 am #43486Anonymous
InactiveFor my oldest, Kaden, we realized that he needed to go from the 2 naps a day (he was doing 2 hrs in the morning and 2 in the afternoon) to 3-3.5 hr nap once per day by age 13 mos. He will be 3 in Dec and he STILL takes a 2.5-3 hr nap a day! I put him down at 1pm and he sleeps until 3:30-4pm. bedtime is 8:30. Now, my younger baby takes a morning nap (9:00-10:30) and an afternoon nap (same time as Kaden only he wakes earlier).
I’m not sure if that helps any. I just think that for Kaden, by 13mos, he was getting irritated b/c I was putting him down too much and he was doing the sleep/wake thing too much during the day. Once he got used to the 1 nap, the nap got longer and longer and he got up to 3 solid hours.
Good luck. It can get frustrating trying to figure out nap schedules with more than 1 child and LOTS of stuff to do!September 29, 2007 at 12:42 pm #43493Anonymous
Inactivei would put him down at 1:30… soo you only have to hold him off for an hour.. while he is sleepy.. possibly delay him with lunch. thats what i do for my son. he is almost 16 mos.. we do one nap a day .. i lay him down at 1:15.. after lunch.. and he naps for an hour and a half.. and then goes to sleep for the night @ 7:30ish.
it is hard…because they do show that they are tired around lunch time.. but if you could just hold him off an hour like you are doing.. the schedule really does work out the best for you.September 29, 2007 at 2:11 pm #43497Anonymous
InactiveTaylor is 17 months and naps once a day right after lunch 1:00 ish and her naps are currently 1.5 -2 hours then she goes to bed at 8pm. Alexis is 3 and she no longer naps, if she does then she is up until midnight, I think we gave up on naps for her when she was 2.5 years old.

InactiveI can’t be much help, but I’m glad you posted this thread. Sarah is 17 months and still takes 2 naps per day (about an hour long each). It’s been hit or miss lately with her afternoon nap so I’ve been wondering if it’s “time” to make the transition to one nap. I just HATE to put forth the time and effort to transition her to one nap when the dreaded time change is coming soon and there is NO WAY she can go from waking at 6 (which will turn into 5am with the time change) and make it until 1:00pm. Sorry, I’m not trying to hijack your post…I’m just sympathizing with the dilemma.

KeymasterI can’t help much either- ari is 14 months & still does 2 naps a day
his morning nap is about 1hr and his afternoon one is about 2hrs (sometimes closer to one hr or sometimes even longer than 2hrs)I’m terrible- for the most part, I’m letting the babysitter figure it out

InactiveMy boys were all taking just one nap at that age. They would go down sometime between 12:00 and 1:00 and sleep for a couple of hours. Then they’d be ready to go to bed around 7 or 8:00. Bryce is still on this schedule. I hope you can find something that works!

InactiveAlex is in daycare. At 12 months, they switched her from a crib to a cot for naps. So, she only naps once a day now (when most of the class is napping). She gets up between 6:30 and 7, naps from about 12:30 to 2:30 and goes to bed between 7:30 and 8. Some days, she is a mess by bedtime, but usually she does pretty well with this schedule.

InactiveAbby is 20 months old tomorrow and she has been on one nap for quite a few months now. She gets up around 6:00 (due to my work schedule – sleeps till 7:30 if not woken up) and takes a 2-2 1/2 hour nap in the afternoon starting at roughly 1:00. She goes to bed around 7:30 and is usually asleep between 8:00 and 8:30 (has to play with her dolls in bed for a while). I think all of these kiddos are so very different that I can’t imagine any two of them having anywhere near the same schedule. Have to keep us guessing

InactiveThanks to everyone for the replies. I forgot to select “notify me of replies” so I didn’t realize anyone had posted. Ooops.
I decided this weekend to aim for a one nap a day schedule for Andrew and try for an earlier bedtime (which really doesn’t work well for our family’s evenings). But then, of course, Andrew seems to be catching something and has been out of sorts today and is still asleep from his 2nd nap right now (7:07 PM). Who knows what time bedtime will be now!? -
