InactiveMy girl is 11 weeks old and she has acid reflux. The reason whe know it is because from 4 weeks old her feeding became worse (she only wanted to drink 4-5 minutes). And she started to spit up and she also became more restless and we could often hear how the milk is coming back into her throat (even a hour and a half after feeding) and we could see it hurts her. so the docter gave us losec. Now, the spitting up is better, but she still refuses to drink longer than 5 minutes (there are sometimes exceptions). I am breastfeeding and it seems as if I have a strong let down (and milk supply is also good). So I have to coaxed her in all ways to breast feed for longer periods so that she could get to the hind milk. I have to walk around while she drinks or wait a half hour and then try again. Sometimes she just outright refuses to nurse any longer (screams if I try). She has been sleeping so badly (day naps as well as night naps)…we had a few good nights, but I think the fact that she is drinking only 5 minutes let her wake up at night. And she sometimes have greenish stools. Does anyone else who are breastfeeding have the same problems? Any ideas?

InactiveHey! YES!!! We had all of the same problems.. everything from short feeds and green poo. The culprit is most likely the reflux but it is really made worse by your OAL. I also had/have this, and did several things to help. What you need to do is retrain your body to not make as much milk, so that she can get to the hindmilk. The foremilk that she is mostly drinking is what is likely causing the green stools. And it’s also a little harder to digest, so it can cause the reflux/gas issues to worsen as well.
Block feed her on one side only for each feed. Some moms even did several feeds from the same side. That way she will get to that good milk, and your body will start cutting back on how much milk it is producing. Also, take her off the breast after you let down. She won’t like this, but let your milk shoot out into a cloth or something until is stops and then reattatch her. This way it won’t be shooting down her throat and she might be more comfortable and eat longer. You could also try nursing her lying down or with her in front of you or even on top of you so that your flow is slowed that way. And… if you’ve done all this for several days and she still is nursing for only 5 minutes, but is gaining weight (is she?) then I wouldn’t worry. My son never really nursed very long, but he was a porker!

InactiveHI Bensmama…thank you for reply. She is gaining weight. I just would like to know – how were your feeding times? I mean did you have any routine? Like every three hours or what? That is what makes it the worse! I have to work and with her it is so difficult to plan when breastfeeding will happen…I always assume she is hungry because of her short drinking…So do you think it is possible to incorporate some routine considering that is nursing for only 5-7 minutes at a time and she has reflux?

InactiveMy oldest dd was a short feeder as well. i fed her every 3 hours, even when she only ate for 5 minutes. You could also wieght her before and after a feed and see how much she took in. If is not very much, i would feed her every 2 1/2 hours. Usually reflux babies do better with small more frequent feedings, of course this is not so easy on mommy.
Breasfeeding is a great priviledge and sacrifice. You should be proud of yourself. Of course sometimes is not posibble. I hope the tips Naomi gave you help.
