I’m new to this site, but am grateful to have come across it. My DS is 9 mo. now. He was born a tad early and spent a week in the NICU. Within two days, he was diagnosed with reflux and put on Zantac, as he was having respiration and feeding problems. We have made all the adjustments possible at home, and it has just been necessary to to use the Zantac, upping the dose as he grows. Seems like a textbook, as he has several very fussy and non-sleeping days, we up his dosage and he’s great again. He’s been a VERY happy baby regardless of all the puking (unlike my DD, now 8, who was never dx with reflux, but had problems until she was 7). Last week, the doctor suggested I stop the Zantac cold turkey, as babies his age no longer need the meds. I thought that was odd, as he’d approved an increase in the dosage just a month prior. However, I decided to go with the advice, and he’s been eating fine and still mostly happy, though very stuffy/congested. Yesterday, however he spiked a high fever and I took him in this morning to find he has an ear infection. I didn’t see my regular ped., but a new one in the office. When I asked if I should continue to keep him off the Zantac, she said I definitely should. I, however, find it more than coincidental that he came down with an ear infection just 4 days after stopping the Zantac, especially since he’s never had an ear infection before. I’m curious to have outside advice. For now, I’m keeping him on the Zantac, as he seems happier on it.
