InactiveI’m in a mother’s play and pray group at our church, and we met on Tuesday. Anyway, one of the moms has only been twice, and this was the first time that she left her son in the nursery so she could fellowship with the moms. She is an older mother and super overprotective and anxious (I should talk, really
). Part of the problem is that her son is really needy, fussy, etc. Well, I overheard her talking to another mom about how they have finally figured out that her son has a milk allergy (he is 11 mo.). He gets up several times at night, is fussy, has eczema, breaks out in hives from milk, etc. She was really excited to have finally found a formula that will work for him …. Alimentum!!! I guess she breastfed up until this point and was really stressing out about him not wanting the formula, but said that she thinks he is finally taking it well. What do I do? Do I tell her that it has milk? Suggest Neocate? My problem is that I really don’t know this woman well, and I don’t want to come across the wrong way, like a pushy know it all, you know? But, at the same time, I was just floored that her doctor suggested Alimentum when it is obvious that the kid cannot handle milk!Poor lady. She ended up leaving after about 20 minutes because the nursery workers could not get her son to settle down.Bensmama 2007-10-10 20:11:02 October 10, 2007 at 8:54 pm #44077hellbennt
Keymasterme, I’d jump right in, but then again I’m a pushy know it all,
LOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!maybe just tell her about this forum, how it’s helped you & if you can be of any help you’re available…October 10, 2007 at 9:33 pm #44080Anonymous
InactiveSarah had a mild intolerance and did OK on alimentum. However, she never had hives, excema etc…so if it is a bad case of MSPI…you’re absolutely right that alimentum won’t solve the problem. Hmm, that’s a tough one. Maybe you could try talking with her and if she seems put off or uninterested then you could at least say you tried. Or maybe just bring it up to her that there are OTHER options if alimentum doesn’t work. I know when we were first battling reflux, I was SOOO happy that the doctor gave us zantac! LOL! I had NO CLUE that there were other/better ways of treating reflux. I thought once the zantac didn’t work that I just had an “unhappy baby!” I was RELIEVED when I found this forum and realized there were other options. Maybe she’ll feel the same way and welcome some more knowledge on the subject. Whatever you decide, I hope it works out.

InactiveShane would get excema from goodstart or normal formulas..but not from alimentum. So it could possibly be o.k. I think the hives part is making me lead to him being more highly allergic.. sooo hopefully the mom has noticed that he hasnt broken out and is doing better on the alimentum.
I would tell her about yourself and about our site. And say there is alot of info pertaining to dairy allergies on here as well. And you might get into talking…and see how he is doing on the alimentum.. and if he isnt much better.. i would let her know about neocate.October 11, 2007 at 1:41 pm #44106Anonymous
InactiveOwen was not able to tolerate Alimentum and I was very upset with the doc and nurses that no one said there was a little milk in it until he was soooooooo uncomfortable and miserable that he refused to eat and was VERY sick! It didn’t happen until about 5 weeks into using Alimentum.
I would maybe suggest that she watch him for a few weeks and don’t necessarily blurt out that Alimentum isn’t going to work, but just say it has very small amount of milk in it and if she sees any changes to question it.
I wish someone would have done that for me! -
