InactiveMy baby is now 5 months old. He is breastfed. He started showing symptoms of reflux at around 21/2 weeks of age. He was put on compounded prevacid and yes, we had the proper dose and it was made correctly(16.8% sodium bicarbonate). Anyway, it did help a lot but I found he still had his bad days. I did notice a correlation between dairy in my diet so I cut it out. He would always get better when I cut it out and worse if I had some. Then, just before the age of 3 months he got considerably worse to the point where I took him to the hospital because he couldn’t even eat because he was refluxing so bad. So I actually took him off the medicine and he actually got better. He got worse again for a few days a couple of weeks later and then was great for 3 weeks. He was like an angel baby.
Since then it comes and goes but now, at 5 months he is fussy all the time but actually sleeping better than ever. He will have 2 hour naps and is sleeps 5-7 hour stretch at night. Is it possible for his reflux to only bother him when he is awake and just be fussy and be sleeping so well? I’m just wondering if perhaps it is something else. I know it isn’t hunger because we have tried cereal and even after eating his cereal he is still fussy.Sorry this is so long.October 21, 2007 at 3:43 pm #44530InactiveI went through a similar situation with my daughter. I had to stop b/f because she was actually allergic to my milk. Milk/dairy is in a lot more things than you would think. Ham, sausage, gravy mixes, to name a few. Danni’s reflux bothers her day and night. She can’t lay flat ever, not even for diaper changes. Try to get to a GI doctor. That will be the best thing you can do to get the answers you need. I hope things get better soon.

What kind of formula did you put her on and did she get better after that?October 21, 2007 at 5:20 pm #44535InactiveWe tried a lot of different formulas and everyone made her sick within a few days. So, at 8 months old, she started on Silk(soy milk) and that has worked. She eats table food. Mostly meat and veggies because of her allergy to milk protein.

KeymasterColette,if you want to continue breastfeeding & have not done the elimination diet, you might want to try it to pinpoint what, if naything that you’re eating is affecting your baby…October 21, 2007 at 8:31 pm #44548InactiveInteresting… It almost sounds like he is still refluxing, but maybe the acid is no longer an issue.. thus, you are able to be off the medicine.. like he’s a happy spitter, even though not happy all the time… confusing, I know. Maybe it’s the act of refluxing itself that bothers him, just the uncomfortable feeling of it.
I agree with Laura though, it sounds like it could be food related since it comes and goes. The elimination diet is no fun, but it could really help. -
