InactiveOk first!
We finally made it from Guam to the east Coast andwe have an appointment at Walter Reed next week with a peds GI doctor WOOOHOOOO! What can I expect to happen first? Jack has already had an upper GI that showed his anatomy was fine but had a “high level of reflux”. He is currently on 7.5 mgs of prevacid (caps)twice a day and seems to be doing better, he gained 9 ounces in 2 weeks:) He still isn’t crazy about taking his bottles or eating solids but at this point I think it’s because he’s so buisy. He won’t sit still:)
Will they run more tests?
Say his meds are working- goodbye?:(
Or switch things up?
Also, is anyone on Earth’s Best organic cereal? It’s whole grain and i wanted to switch him because it seems healthier but I’m not sure if he can handle the whole grain at 5.5 months.
Thanks,
Cris

InactiveI think if he is not in pain and is gaining they will probably just say keep with whatever you are doing. If you don’t mind my asking why did you want to see a specialist?

InactiveHi! I’ve used Earth’s Bst Organic oatmeal for all three of my babies as early as 3 months old. My children don’t have any food sensitivities, and they all did fine with it.
If you are using it for thickening bottles, you may find that it is not as fine as the other brands and doesn’t work as well in bottles because it clumps and clogs the nipples. I use it for spoon feeding, but use Gerber for bottles.
Good luck at Walter Reed.

InactiveWe are going to see a specialist because #1 Jack hasn’t been gaining weight- this is the most he’s gained at one time so far
#2 We live on an island and since my ped tried everything she knows she sent us to WRAMC( walter reed) to get further evaluated. She can only follow what a peds GI tells her.
#3 His eating is AWEFUL!!! He only takes 20 or so ounces a day( 24 hour period) and there are times when I can barely get 10ozs in him.
There ar days when I know he isn’t eating because he’s busy but most days I can tell he’s in pain. He kicks his feet while eating( like he’s hurting) I can hear him choking and struggling to get his food down and he will only eat before he naps or when he’s tired. I didn’t really notice how “weird” Jack’s eating was until I saw another baby his age and she sucked down a 8 ozs bottle and took 4 zs of solids with any fights or struggles. He truly is happiest when he’s not eating.

InactiveCris, Jack sounds exactly like Hailey. I hope the Gi is able to help you. It’s so awful to watch them go through this, and draining to deal with it every day.

InactiveMight want to ask for a feeding evaluation with a speech pathologist or OT while you are up here. They can tell you alot of things that I never thought of. Like if his motor skills are working right, does he have a weak swallow, can he suck right, is he coordinated enought to chew right and start solids. Then they reccommend therapy and even tell you what foods to start with. They also help with the noneaters and have very unique methods. We don’t use the high chair because it is negative to our dd, we have to clap and praise her when she takes a bite, stuff like that. Some kids do better on the 30 mg of prevacid split 10mg 3x a day. Hard to get the docs to go for that though! I wish you the best of luck. Print off the med dose on marci-kids before you go. also, maybe he needs a diff. formula. som ething easier to digest? Could ask for some neocate samples while you are there. Good luck!

InactiveI have been using Earths Best Rice Cearel for my 3 1/2 month old to thicken night time bottles. I have not seen any problems.

Keymasteris isomil soy? if so, I’d ask about switching to nutrimigen or alumentim formula and then ask ped GI how long to give it before you switch to neocate
I’d ask for endoscopy to see if throat is ulcerated, if there’s eos cells (shows allergy) and if there’s esophogeal thrush- all of these things can make eating painful- at least discuss w/ ped GI…
I also say ask for test to see if there’s DGE (delayed gastric emptying) IF you suspect it- you’d notice spit up hours after baby has eaten- not just right away…
I also say go for SWALLOW study- like Sarah wrote- perhaps there’s something going on with the actual swallowing/sucking mechanism…
yes, and print out marci-kids dosing info…
good luck!

ps: meet babywearers in the DC area

InactiveLaura,
I just meet someone yesterday from the local babywearers club- too funny that you just mentioned that.
I will ask for all of these tests to be done as well. I think Jack’s motor skills are ok- he already uses his thumb and pointer to pick up small objects, he sits with out any help, he’s pulling himself up and he chews his avacado when there are small lumps. But, I will mention about seeing a OT.
We were also on Alimention but he screamed for 4 days and when he was on nutramigen he still had mucusy stools that were very loose, he has eaten the most on Isomil( soy).
Thanks for all the great info!
Cris
