InactiveAriella gets hysterical when she sees shoes or when we’re trying them on in the store. I know we shouldn’t have waited this long to get her to wear them but we were waiting (foolishly) for her to come around (now I know that it was so silly of us)
. What do we do to make the transition smoother? I can’t even try a pair of shoes on her b/c she screams and kicks.
I’ve got to get them on her somehow and hopefully they’ll stay on (something tells me she’ll pull them off). *Sigh* Please, I’ll try anything at this point!October 21, 2007 at 10:03 pm #44559Anonymous
InactiveI started with “soft” shoes — can’t remember the name of them, but they are sold in baby boutiques for about $20 a pair– the name will come to me sometime here, but Target and Wal-mart sell knock offs.
Then eventually we moved to a harder soled shoe. Now one thing I would consider– does she have a wide foot?? Griffin has an extremely wide foot and we had to go with Stride Rites for him and still do buy expensive shoes because I couldn’t figure out what the deal was he threw a fit about shoes until I got him ones that fit! First time mom syndrome!

InactiveRobeez– that’s what the soft shoes are– told ya it would come to me! They are hard to pull off and so they get used to having something besides socks on– then move to more of a shoe.
I would also say if you can keep them on a hour a day and then move up from there…… Don’t try to keep them on for long periods of time a first!I just was at a conference that ended today (physical therapy) and the guy did Peace Corps in Africa and he said we are ruining our childrens feet by putting shoes on too soon– our feet become lazy and musculature doesn’t work the same as with bare feet! He said they of course go around Africa all their lives without shoes and have great looking feet!Don’t stress!October 21, 2007 at 10:07 pm #44561Anonymous
InactiveOh, I’m so sorry to hear this! I remember a time when I thought Sarah would be barefoot her whole life b/c she hated them as well. Thankfully she now LOVES her shoes. If she finds a pair around the house she HAS to wear them. My mom just bought her a pair of house shoes/slippers. I wanted something quick and warm for the trip to daycare this winter and they have turned out to be her favorite “house shoes”. Maybe something like that would be a good start. They fit around her foot but they’re made of cloth so it might not feel as confining as a leather shoe. The bottom is a flexible rubber. I think she found them at Toys R’ Us.
Just for a laugh…here’s the other side of the coin. I think Sarah has a shoe FETISH! We were killing time waiting to have her pictures taken at Sears yesterday and she took off running yelling “SHOES SHOES” when she saw the shoe department. I didn’t think we would get her to leave. She had to try on several pairs (adult mens, womens, childrens, you name it!)

InactiveErica…are you a physical therapist? And here is a dumb question…how would I know if her foot is on a wider side?

InactiveAmy, that’s too funny!! Sarah looks too cute on the picture with the sunglasses 🙂 How do you get the picture like that? I try to upload Ariella’s and it’s just not working 🙁

InactiveAlana loves to play with her shoes at first. When she first got them I let her “explore” her shoes as much as she liked without having to put them on. Then I slowly showed her how to put them on and off, then she started wearing them for 5 mins or so. Even now she often carries her shoes (and mine) around the house. Maybe another little girl with a shoe fetish!

InactiveI think the Robeez might be a good idea if she’s not liking shoes right now. My kids have worn them too – they are hard for the little one to get off (neither Ben or Paige ever got one to come off) and are a great transition to hard-soled shoes. And they’ve got some really cute styles too! http://www.robeez.com/EN-US/default.htm?Lang=EN-US&PriceCat=2&RefID
I remember Ben going through that as well – I can remember him crying and saying “Shoes all done!” but now he’s fine.MFPIx22007-10-22 17:26:17

Inactivedoes she really need to be wearing shoes right now? if you are in a cold climate, how about some soft comfy boots to protect her feet from the weather—-and then just let her wear socks around otherwise. sometimes you just have to pick your battles.

InactiveMarianna-
I am a physical therapist assistant– Kids don’t really develop arches until they are a little bit older, my 3 1/2 yr old has a really flat foot. His foot is shaped a lot like a box, there is no indention where an arch would be normally and his foot just is really wide. His foot is really “thick” too, his shoes didn’t lace really well, the tonge of the shoe really stuck out because his foot took up so much room. It’s hard to explain… Sorry. If you are having to really shove her foot into a shoe and her foot is relaxed and the shoe is tight, may need a bigger shoe or wider.Anyway, I would take her to a nicer shoe store– we have Jr. Shoe World here, but I would take her somewhere that they actually measure her foot just like they would for you at a higer end shoe store.Yes, you will pay bigger bucks for the shoe, but you will get a nice shoe that will last and will fit properly, and the amount that I spend on kids clothes, shoes are a great buy if you really think about it.And, if you ruin your feet, as you age, you are also ruining your knees, hips and back– you know the song your knee bone is connected to your hip bone and so on…… It’s true! Shoes are one thing I harp on and don’t skimp on, if I buy from Target, I buy 2 pair and interchange and buy more frequently b/c they just don’t hold up as well and kids feet change A LOT!!Sorry, got on my soap box!!!Most likely she is just like any other little kid, she doesn’t like shoes on b/c she’s not used to them, so I would just slowly keep trying. My daycare pushed me to get “shoes” for Griffin, so I finally did when he was about 14 mo. old.October 23, 2007 at 10:16 am #44620Anonymous
InactiveChristine (kevieb), we’re in NYC and it’s getting really cold.
Erica, I am a speech therapist and do work closely with OTs, PTs, etc…I am aware of all the problems that may arise later in her life if proper footware was not worn when she was little. That is why I’m stressing this so much b/c I am getting frustrated with this situation and don’t want to put on just any shoes for the sake of her wearing something. I don’t mind paying the bigger $$ but she doesn’t even let anyone touch her feet to measure them. Like I said, the gets hysterical. We went to a boutique shop where they take their sweet time with you b/c the cheapest pair of shoes is $80 (I mean, children’s). The poor lady did everything possible to get closer to Ariella only she would not have it. We ran from the store and never looked back b/c we were so embarrassed at the way she was behaving (people were looking at us like “what are you doing to the poor child?” b/c she was gagging at that point). Ugh…I bought a few pairs of shoes at Daffy’s. I put them all over the room where she has her toys so she can explore them and get comfortable with them, so to speak. I’ll keep trying putting them on and I hope one day she’ll let me. My father in law suggests that I just force her (that’s his way of dealing with everything, by force). I don’t want to because it’s just shoes, for G-d’s sake. She’ll wear them eventually.

InactiveWell, since she’s walking already, it doesn’t seem like a sensory thing, but it does seem weird that she would get that hysterical about it?? I would keep trying and see how it goes, you know if she’s never had things on her feet– I don’t even put socks on my kids much, it’s going to take a little bit of trying.
Sounds like your on the right track, but I wouldn’t stress too much! You probably need to worry more about when she turns 13 and wants a pair of stilettos- however you spell it
Those will be worse on her feet than nothing!October 29, 2007 at 5:09 pm #44750Anonymous
InactiveJust to update on our shoe situation. I got her Robeez and she did scream at first but she got used to them pretty quickly. We tried to put on “real” shoes this morning and she did fuss but nothing compared to the show she used to put on (with the gagging and almost throwing up). I actually have another question. The shoes that I got her are “heavy” so to speak. They have a thick sole and are on a heavy side. Should I get her a lighter shoe so she’s more comfortable to walk in them? It’s getting really cold in NYC and whenever we’re outside, she insists on taking a few steps by herself. I don’t want her freezing if the shoe is not warm enough.

InactiveDagney freaked out when we brought her to Stride Rite the first time, but I think she was more afraid of the girl grabbing and pushing her feet to measure them (it was right after her 1 year appointment with all the vaccinations!). We got 1 pair on her, but she kept trying to get them off and chew them, I tried stopping her because I didn’t want her to chew shoes we weren’t going to buy, so she freaked out more & we had to leave! We went back 1 week later, I measured her foot w/ the girl looking (dagney was a little upset, but got over it right away), and it turns out she needed a Wide! The first shoes were 1/2 size too small and they weren’t wide!! At first she did take her socks and shoes off all the time, but I’d say after 1 week or so, she seemed to get used to them, and she gets excited now when she sees her shoes. She still takes them off sometimes (they’re on with velcro, so it’s a little easier to take off), but she seems to like them much more now. Good luck, hope this helps!!
