My son is 5 weeks old… he throws up alot.. all the time.. it even come out of his nose… He is on Zantac 3 times a day.. it helps with the crying but not the throwing up… So now the doc has also put him on Prevacid 30mg tablet once a day… Anyone had any success with this stoppin the throwing up? I mean i dont want my baby to be on 2 medications at once if its not going to be beneficial…. Im scared of over medicating him…

keep with the zantac for 2 weeks because until the prevacid works (can take up to 2 weeks) your baby will need the zantac. be sure to give the zantac 4hrs seperate from the prevacid

once your baby is on prevacid for 2 weeks then you can stop the zantac,

HOWEVER it needs to be a PROPER dose of prevacid which luckily/thankfully your baby’s dose seems to be!

you need to give the prevacid on an empty stomach and also, it would be best to split the dose into 2 doses or even three…

as for stopping the spit up, unfortunately there is no medicine for this;

the medicine stop the PAIN. but, there are some babies who once they are more comfprtable stop spitting up so much…

The meds won’t stop the throwing up. It will stop the pain and may actually increase the spitting up as they are no longer in pain. I personally would split the prevacid dose into 15mg in the am. and pm and then decrease the Zantac as the prevacid seems to work better for most babies. But that is just my opinion.

Thanks guys.. but after giving just one dose of Prevacid solutab.. my baby became very fussy and gassy and in so much pain.. i did some research and come to find out , it has lactose in it.. wich my little man is allergic to.. no wonder he hurt so bad… i will not be continuing the prevacid….

he’s allergic to lactose?

or milk protein?

the solutabs have milk sugar, not milk protein…

you might want to give it a week or two- the reactions you describe are fairly common & a lot of babies seem to ‘adjust’ to the solutabs and do fine with them…

If you are worried about the lactose maybe ask the Dr for another form of PPI? Alana did Prevacid and Zantac (at a high dose of both) for a few months so I don’t think there is a problem being on both if your bub needs it. Each time I tried to stop the zantac she started refluxing more so I stuck with it. I would definately look into another PPI though. Goodlcuk.

My first son, now 2 years old could never handle Prevacid because of the Lactose in it (I am assuming). He always got chronic diaherra from it, both times we tried it.

Kendra couldn’t tolerate the prevacid solutabs either, even though she was on it for a year. She had watery mucosy poos for a while. We now use Zegerid and it seems to help much better.

I called my doctor she said there is not enough lactose in it to cause that type of reaction and she has asked me to try it again and give it 3 days… But she never said anything about splitting the dose.. she just said give it to him once in the morning.. the whole tablet…. should i split it instead? and do i have to space it 4 hours from the zantac? she didnt mention that either

Dylan could not handle the solutabs either. They have lactose and aspertime in them. Not sure what he couldn’t handle, but it was miserable….

Give it a try and then maybe ask for another form of the med ?

try splitting the dose- babies have very fast metabolisms so they ‘speed’ through the meds…yes the PPI has to be spaced from the zantac-

our ped GI said 2hrs seperate & that’s what we did & it worked

others have posted here that their drs told them 4hrs & other drs have said 5 hrs- i always tell people 4hrs just to be ‘safe’ but as you will see, so so much of this is trial & error…so if you want to ‘try’ 2hrs that’s what we did & it worked just fine…

as for splitting the dose I also found that splitting it ‘unevenly’ worked best for jonah- his reflux was worse at night so I gave a higherdose in the evening…
