My daughter is 5.5 months old and has terrible reflux. She has been on Zantac since she was about 2 weeks old. About a month ago, our pedi recommended Prevacid in addition to the Zantac (the Zantac just wasn’t cutting it anymore). She is now on 1 ml of Zantac 3 times a day and 15 ml of Prevacid once a day. Neither are helping. She is miserable and isn’t sleeping. Has anyone else’s child continued to have trouble even with numerous medications?

I answered your other post- here’s what I posted:

is it 15mgs of prevacid or is it 15mls of prevacid, meaning is it compounded prevacid (liquid form) or is it capsules or solutabs?

if it is capsules is it being given with something like applesauce on an empty stomach? If it’s the solutabs is it being given on an empty stomach?

are you giving the zantac seperate from the prevacid? how far apart? if it’s 2 hours, try 4 hours…

how much does baby weigh? a high dose of zantac is 10mgs per kilo…

Thanks for the reply. I didn’t know you couldn’t give the Prevacid and Zantac at the same time. Maybe that is the problem. She is on the Prevacid solutabs – so it is 15 mgs once a day. Then she takes 1 ml of Zantac three times a day. She weighs just under 15 pounds. I need to figure out what that is in kilos and what the max Zantac doseage is for her weight. Her pedi said she is on the max doseage though.

well, I would ask your phamacist to double check & to HUMOUR you about the zantac dose. My educated guess is that the ped looked up the dose for ‘normal’ babies- not ones w/ GERD- I asked this very question here: Zantac dosing- my/other’s question: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9539&PID=82914#82914

so I will caculate for you at the highest dose for a GERDling, at 10mgs per kilo- again, check with your pharmacist to check me!!

I will calculate for 14.5 lbs

14.5 lbs is 6.6kilos

10 x 6.6 = 66mgs total of zantac for the day

divide by 15 to get the mls (your bottle should read 15mgs/ml)

66 divided by 15 = 4.4mls of zantac for the day, total, divided up however works best for your baby

so you can increase the zantac…
