InactiveMy daughter is 5.5 months old and has terrible reflux. She has been on Zantac since she was about 2 weeks old. About a month ago, our pedi recommended Prevacid in addition to the Zantac (the Zantac just wasn’t cutting it anymore). She is now on 1 ml of Zantac 3 times a day and 15 ml of Prevacid once a day. Neither are helping. She is miserable and isn’t sleeping. I feel awful for her and I am so exhausted from not sleeping that I feel like I can’t think straight. I have a call into the pedi and am going to ask to be referred to a GI specialist. In the meantime, does anyone have any advice? Is there anything I can do to help her feel better?

InactiveI feel just like you! My ds is seven months old and is now on Prevacid 15 mg. twice a day. He isn’t sleeping well and forget about napping. He’s spitting up constantly and then seems to be starving. We’re going to see a specialist on the 20th. Good heavens I hope he has an answer. I don’t really have any answers for you, but wanted you to know that you aren’t alone. Hugs to you!

Keymasteris it 15mgs of prevacid or is it 15mls of prevacid, meaning is it compounded prevacid (liquid form) or is it capsules or solutabs?
if it is liquid is it compounded CORRECTLY? https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=7855&TPN=1if it is capsules is it being given with something like applesauce on an empty stomach? If it’s the solutabs is it being given on an empty stomach?Prevacid 101(last post on the page): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1are you giving the zantac seperate from the prevacid? how far apart? if it’s 2 hours, try 4 hours…how much does baby weigh? a high dose of zantac is 10mgs per kilo…November 7, 2007 at 6:57 pm #45156Anonymous
InactiveLike Laura said depending on what form of prevacid you are using you may need to give on an empty stomach. If you are using the solutabs, I would split the dose to see if that helps give 1/2 in the a.m. and 1/2 in the p.m. Also you could try Cherry Mylanta supreme between feeds to see if that helps as well. How long have you been on prevacid? it takes up to 2 weeks to see the benefits when given properly. And you may need a higher dose, it took until 30mg/day for us to see a different baby.

InactiveAre you bf or ff? if formula…what kind? have you started solids yet?
Hope your pedi has some more suggestions. If he does not refer you to gastro then you might consider calling yourself. Ours has helped us so much.November 8, 2007 at 9:05 am #45177Anonymous

InactiveIf you are bf, have you read/heard about MSPI? Some babies, and it seems reflux ones especially, have trouble digesting cow’s milk proteins, and sometimes other proteins as well, like soy. MSPI stands for Milk Soy Protein Intolerance. When I took dairy and soy out of my diet (and beef and gluten and highly acidic foods in our case) things improved dramatically. You might think about this angle if she doesn’t respond well to higher meds. There are forums on this site when you can read all about how to do this, it isn’t easy, but it’s wonderful to think that you can control your diet and improve your baby’s health. Good luck!

InactiveHi Jana,
Has your daughter ever slept well? How are you putting her to sleep? Is she in a crib? If so, is it elevated?
My husband and I held Sophia in our arms for the first two months until we got a tucker sling. She now sleeps on that at night, in our bed and is sleeping through the night! Until that point, she was still waking every hour or two and we were in complete hell! For us, we needed that extreme elevation to make her comfortable enough to sleep. Also, we had to go almost a month on prevacid 15mg solutabs before we noticed any difference. 🙁

InactiveThanks for all of the suggestions! We actually got in with the GI today and he suggested splitting the Prevacid up into 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at night and having me cut out all milk and soy proteins. I am going to give it a shot.
Andrea – we have her crib matress elevated, but I don’t know if it is elevated enough. She slept great until she was about 3 months old, which is also when her reflux seemed to get a lot worse (and the Zantac stopped working). I will look into the Tucker sling. I would do anything to get some sleep right now.November 16, 2007 at 4:08 pm #45540Anonymous

Anne – how long did it take to notice a difference once you cut all of those things out of your diet? Per the GI’s suggestion, I am now on a milk and soy protein free diet. I am just wondering how long it will be before we know if it is working. BTW, I am in Southern California too (Santa Barbara).November 16, 2007 at 6:30 pm #45543hellbennt
Keymasterthere’s a breast feeding support group at yahoo where they are really into discussing diet :http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/breastfeedingreflux/ & one of the moms from that group has her own page: http://www.users.qwest.net/~fsdebra1/
– she’s the moderator of the group, so you might want to start there…
it was definitely worth it for me to give it a try…i tried the dr. dears elimination diet (http://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/T041800.asp, but really only found that jonah reacted to citrus, tomato products, eggplant & tuna (this is an odd one i know, but he reacted 2 times after i ate tuna sushi & then after seared tuna – could’ve be a coincidence but i didn’t chance it!).
http://www.users.qwest.net/~fsdebra1/wweintro.html all about elimination diet-what to eat & more!
