InactiveI brought my son to his appointment yesterday with our ped. The first thing he said when he walked in the room is, “I’m not sure what else we can do for Caleb”. So I right away told him that I don’t think the Zantac is working, can we try a PPI? He says, he’s never heard of anyone putting an infant on a PPI. That should have been my first clue. So I show him the stuff from Marci-Kids which he tells me is outdated information because they mention a drug in it that is no longer used in the US. He also told me that Reglan is given to little premies and I could check with any hospital, there is nothing wrong with giving Reglan.

He asks if we have tried switching him to Nutramigen, he is already on Alimentum. He thinks this will make a huge difference but he also reluctantly gave me a two week sample of Prevacid. He only put him on 7.5mg once a day. My son weighs 13 lbs 15 oz. and will be 3 months old next week. This seems like to low of a dose, but I am willing to try anything. He also wanted us to stay on the Reglan, I told him I would but I took him off it today.
What really makes me angry is he told me he wasn’t sure it was a reflux issue. I left his office and went to lunch with my Mom. My son started choking in his car seat and then blew formula out his nose. I had last fed him three hours ago!

InactiveI am so sorry you had such a bad appointment – I definitely think you
need to change doctors! I’d try to find a new Ped and then also get a
referral to a Ped GI. Where do you live? Maybe we can help you find a
doctor?March 24, 2006 at 3:12 pm #4586Anonymous
InactiveI agree with Karen-you need a new ped! He doesn’t seem very knowledgeable about the use of ppi in an infant. Truthfully though some babies do well on nutramigen over alimentum or the other way around!

InactiveI agree with everyone else- GET A NEW DOC!!!! Everytime a doctor tells me that they don’t think it’s reflux or they don’t think there’s damage, or they don’t think there’s pain I tell them that they’re wrong. Then I look for a new doc. We’re on our fourth one- the appointment is next week. I really pray that he doesn’t say this too b/c I’m running out of docs in the city who I haven’t seen.
Sorry you had such a rough time.March 24, 2006 at 6:23 pm #4600hellbennt

InactiveWell, way to go getting the prevacid!! Hope you see a difference in a few days and a MAJOR difference once it is fully kicked in. Put a shout out for a good ped to moms in your area. That’s how I found mine. I had to go through 3 of them until i found one that would help me. The other docs kept telling me that it wasn’t the acid hurting her, that it hurts to reflux itself. But once i got the right dose, she stopped crying after 3 months! Also, find a doc that will give you a couple cans of neocate.
Please remember to use the zantac with the prevacid. Give the prevacid first on an empty stomach, then bottle 30 mins later. Then 4 hours later give him the zantac.
(Are they the solutabs? they have lactose and aspartime that can upset some mspi babies)
Great job on stopping the reglan
That’s a good call mom! Reglan is nasty stuff. If he still needs help with the stomach emptying, ask for bethanochol. Both my girls have been on that, no horrible side effects. My oldest is 15 and an honor student. Good luck! Sarah -
