InactiveWell, here I am a little over a week into mommyhood #2. I’m getting worried about reflux issues again. More significantly, I’m worried that she’s aspirating during feedings.
She was born right on her due date, and we started with some BFing and Nutramigen right away (Owen had MSPI and silent reflux). I’m currently pumping and freezing some because I want to see how things pan out, and am not ready to give up BFing. For the past five days, all she has gotten is Nutramigen–unthickened. She is extremely gassy and her stomach gurgles terribly during every feed. Today, she had a very hard time settling on the nipple, and pulled off frequently. It’s hard to burp her, and when I do, liquid seems to come up with it. During feeding, she sounds like she is wheezing and gasping for air. This also happens if I lay her down after a feeding. She’ll even look like she’s choking. We have her sleeping in the trusty FP Aquarium Swing (our lifesaver from round #1).She has been fussy on and off–but seems in pain when she cries. It’s hard for me to know if I’m over-reacting due to my expereience with Owen, or if I really should be concerned at this point. We have a one week check-up tomorrow, and I’ll bring it up then.Think I should call the Ped. GI? Is this too early?December 6, 2007 at 8:02 pm #46210hellbennt
Keymastercongratulations on having a sweet new baby!!!!if you’re worried about aspiration, then I’d call the GI and ask about how to arrange for a swallow study…I would do this first just so you know what you’re dealing with- if everything comes back fine then you’ll know- and if not, well, you’ll know then, too…I would also get in touch with an international board certified lactation consultant http://gotwww.net/ilca/, since you say you want to continue to breastfeed, and I would get in touch with la leche league: The La Leche League Breastfeeding Helpline – US began on June 1, 2007. Everyone in the U.S.A. will have access to toll free breastfeeding help 24 hours a day. Just call 1-877-4-LALECHE (1-877-452-5324).I would also hop on over at the yahoo board:http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/breastfeedingreflux/ & one of the moms from that group has her own page: http://www.users.qwest.net/~fsdebra1/
– she’s the moderator of the group, so you might want to start there…
and here’s: great resources for moms breastfeeding allergy babies on the LLLI website:
http://forums.llli.org/forumdisplay.php?f=37I hope this helps!!!Hang in there! you’re ahead of the game, even if you don’t feel like you are!!!!December 6, 2007 at 8:22 pm #46212Anonymous
InactiveCongrats on #2. I’m sorry you might be going through reflux again! We had a 2nd refluxer as well. She was started on Prevacid at her 2 week check and I called the Ped GI that we saw for our older one right away. I figured it wouldn’t hurt to get an appointment since I know there definitely can be a wait to get in. Follow your instincts, I figured I rather have the appointment and find out there was no GI issue then wait until it got worse and couldn’t get an appointment for weeks.

InactiveHi there!! My little one is one month today and your experience is so similar to mine. First baby, Matthew, ended up with a tube for feedings etc and this time around we are not taking any chances.
I posted a very similar post to yours in the intro a couple of days ago. I say, call the GI and start medicating. We started our little one on Alimentum straight away and he was SO GASSY… gurgling at nipple, like he was choking etc etc and so fussy i was wondering if it could be colic + reflux. After a few days on meds, he is no longer doing some of that stuff. I can now clearly see he has reflux, his spit up has started and vomitting is now part of our lives again.. but the gas is gone for some reason, no longer really gurgling. For us, the lying down is really not an option anymore — last 2 days he has started vomitting when lying down so i just hold him 24/7. The swing is not an option either because it must put too much pressure on his tummy somehow… and we are now officially on Neocate.Am i overeacting? Maybe but i am not taking chances. He is not in pain when he vomits, but he is medicated now, but we will go on Neocate and see if the vomitting decreases over the next month.Sorry — i am not focusing — just wanted to say… get an appointment, follow your instincts… if you have the slightliest feeling that something is on… medicate/change formulas!!December 6, 2007 at 9:37 pm #46222Anonymous
InactiveI say follow your instincts. We had similar concerns after Alexandra was born. She’s still on zantac, because she started having issues again when we tried to wean so I definitely think that we made the right decision. Getting on meds and alimentum right away were definitely the key for her. Congrats on your new baby girl!!!

InactiveThanks everyone! The pediatrician said that she’s not aspirating–she has Laryngomalacia.
Overall, the last 36 hours have been much better. Elizabeth is still gassy, but not inconsolable. We have slept the last two nights (at least as much as one would expect for a 10 day old
), so that is better too.I am doing a lot of babywearing with my favorite KKAFP–she loves being snuggled up close, and I’m a bit more hands-free.I think if I can get more of the gas under control, we’ll all be happy. The Ped. GIs number is posted by the phone, just in case!Ahhh….the life with a newborn…(after a kid with reflux…)Will I ever relax????
