zegerid vs. prilosec

getting prilosec compounded at the pharmacy is ‘tricky’ business- you have to ask for it to be compounded a particular way in order for it to remain stable- also it can only be made in 2wk batches- pharmacists that tell you it’s stable in your frig for 30 days are incorrect…

Your ped gi or even your pharmacist may tell you that prilosec is the SAME thing as zegerid, this is NOT true (this has happened to me). Hopefully Joel (RefluxSol on these boards) will chime in here and give you the science behind it. But needless to say, zegerid is a much more stable form of a ppi, and can be given anytime, before eating, during a meal, after eating, etc. This makes life a lot easier for baby and mama, who have to pretty rigidly schedule life around giving prilosec or prevacid.

If you are wondering which one to go for…I’m not sure if you are, but I’m just guessing from your post. In our experience Zegerid has been wonderful. We did prevacid for a few months, and we did it in the stable solution, (the old way that can’t be done anymore cause of patent reasons) and we took it the unstable way and it was a nightmare. We got onto zegerid and it was such a breeze, easy to give regarding timing and just easier in general. I never had to worry if a bad day was just the meds getting wacky from a bad batch or something. Zegerid is very expensive, so not all insurance covers it, but it’s well worth fighting for with insurance, or even with your doctor. A lot of docs are hesitant to go with a med they’ve never heard of. I printed the info from http://www.marci-kids.com web-site, emailed Dr. Phillips, the pharmacist who developed Zegerid, and took all the printed info into the docs office and begged him to look it over and rx zegerid for us. He did and it’s been one of the best things we’ve done for Lucas’ reflux. I know I sound like a commercial, but it’s all true. Good luck!
