InactiveA rep at Walgreens told me and my doctor that the Prevacid packets, 15mg and 30mgs are being discontinued. Has anyone heard of this??
December 20, 2007 at 1:13 pm #46583InactiveOh, no!!! I haven’t heard about this. When is it happening?? Is there another form of Prevacid that is lactose-free? My son Nathan improved a lot after switching from the solutabs to the packets a few months ago, and I know it was because of the lactose. Lactose intolerance runs in the family, and my oldest (2 1/2 yrs) still is. Yikes!!!!
December 20, 2007 at 2:05 pm #46585InactiveIt must be immediate. I called 3 or 4 different pharmacies trying to find the packets and they were all out, which I thought was weird. Then a walgreen’s employee told me and my dr that they were discontinuing them. I spoke to a different employee today and she said the same thing. I couldn’t find anything out online.
The solutabs made Gabe gassy, too. We are going to try them again IF our insurance will approve it. There is also the capsules, but they have to make it into a suspension and I’ve heard enough horror stories about that. I would rather just make the switch to Prilosec, which is what our insurance prefers anyway.
Sigh. It can’t just be simple can it??
December 23, 2007 at 9:14 am #46658InactiveOh, man, does this stink!!! I did manage to find one more box of the packets at a different pharmacy in town, but that’s it. So we’ll have to make a switch, too.
Jenn, I don’t know if I told you — but a few months ago it was your post about Gabe’s stinky gas that improved on the packets that made me switch Nathan, and it worked great. So thanks for that!! Can you please do me a favor and let me know what you find that works for Gabe now that the packets are history? I think our lo’s are pretty similar, so I’d love to hear what works for you before deciding what to do for Nathan. About a month ago, just as a trial, I gave Nathan one half of one solutab to see what would happen. And he pooped like crazy that day and slept terribly!! There was nothing else going on, and he was back to normal within a couple of days. But anyway, I feel like there is NO way he could handle 30 mg of solutabs. This just really stinks because we were finally in “cruise control” with him. Grrrr…….December 23, 2007 at 12:27 pm #46663InactiveI guess that means it’s true then? I kept hoping it was just a couple of out-of-the-loop Walgreen’s employees. Bummer!
Yesterday was the first day that we were able to give him 15mg 3x. So far he hasn’t been gassy or poopy. He’s sleeping poorly right now, but he’s got 2 teeth coming through. When I give him Motrin he sleeps better. I’ll be watching him closely though. I’ll let you know how it goes with him.
If you end up switching meds which one do you think you’ll do? I’m trying to decide now so that I have all my ducks in a row should we need to go that route.
Oh, and I’m SO glad my post helped little Nathan. That makes me feel better too, because I know my doctor thought I was crazy for thinking the solutabs made him gassy!

How’s Gabe doing with the 45 mg? How many more packets do you have before you have to try something else? I have no idea what we’re going to do with Nathan. I need to research it some and see what the options are….how fun 🙁 But I’ll let you know anything I find out or decide.
Oh, but over Christmas I talked to a pharmacist friend, and he told me that maybe I could just get the Prevacid capsules, open them up and mix the medicine with a little applesauce???? Does anybody know anything about Prevacid capsules? I am clueless since I only have experience with the solutabs and packets — I thought that was all there was besides a liquid form (and we really don’t want to go that route thanks to advice/info from this site).

Gabe has been on the solutabs for a couple weeks now. I think he’s doing okay on them. He had one night early on where he woke up screaming in the middle of the night. 🙁 And he was really crabby there for a while. I was wondering if the solutabs were bothering his stomach again…but…we’ve had non-stop house guests since before Christmas and WAY too many late nights. He’s been getting more sleep and is his happy self again. So maybe the solutabs will work for us.
If you find out anything about the capsules let me know!

Nathan is eating solid foods really well now, so the capsules should be a good option for us, right? Is there anything unusual I need to know about them? Still to be given on an empty stomach and followed by a meal 30-60 minutes later? What food do I need to mix them with for best results? Is it just like the little white medicine balls that are in the packets? Right now, we strain out most of the strawberry powder, then add a little back in with the medicine balls, then add some water and give it in a big dropper. I’ve got about 35 days worth of the packets left, so I might could save the strawberry flavor stuff that we’ve been straining out and discarding, and then use it with the medicine from the capsules so that nothing would really change at all? Or maybe it’d be easier to just give the medicine balls on a spoon with some food? Does the medicine from the capsules have to be given with food? What would you do?
Jenn, I’m glad to hear Gabe is doing well on the solutabs!! That’s great! Prevacid solutabs, I had a heck of a time finding a pharmacy that had them; most said that THEY had discontinued them from their line. I finally found them @ a Kroger pharmacy. I asked my pharmacist today and he hadn’t heard of this. Its been really hard where I live finding meds when my kids need them. Ask your ped what pharmacy they call most meds into; they will likely have what you need.January 10, 2008 at 8:01 am #47176InactiveIf you’re going to do the capsules, break open the capsule and give in a small amount of applesauce (just enough to cover the beads, like a small spoonful) on an empty stomach and followed up with a meal 30 minutes later. The capsules are enteric coated, so they are designed to remain intact in an acidic environment. If you break open the capsule and don’t give it in something acidic it will break down before it gets a chance to work in the stomach. The company says that you can give it in a small spoonful of fruit yogurt or fruit juice if the child won’t take applesauce. Marci-kids said that applesauce worked best, and it was questionable whether or not pears or other fruits were acidic enough.
If you were happy with the packets, I’d call the company that manufactures it in the US and see if it is really discontinued or not…. like someone else said, might just be that your pharmacy isn’t stocking it. I’ve had that happen (said it wasn’t available, when really they just didn’t stock it but didn’t want to lose the business). Good luck. -
