InactiveHi everyone,
I am new to this board but was hoping you could answer a question for me. My ds is almost 6 mths old and for the past week he has started declining his bottles and waking up every hour screaming bloody murder. he also has a viral infection and just got of antibiotics. I took him to the doctor and they think he may need his prevacid increased. He is 19 pounds and currently on 7.5mg of prevacid a day and has been like that for the past 3 months. Is this normal? I have to discuss with his doctor tomorrow but thought 7.5 mg was already a pretty high dosage.
Thanks so much.

Poor baby! This is a common and frustrating theme around here; doctors do not prescribe high enough Prevacid doses for babies and babies continue to suffer.
Have you visited the MARCI-kids.com site yet? They have information about PPI dosing for infants. Many doctors are not aware that infants actually need higher doses of these drugs than adults because they metablolize and eliminate the drug 3 times faster than adults. The only way I could convince my doctor to give my son the right dose was to print the info from MARCI-kids.com and send it to her. (Please consider printing the information and taking it with you to your doctor’s appointment.)
My son weighs 18 lbs and takes 10mg/3x’s daily.
Once my little guy was on the right dose he got much, much better. I hope the same happens for your little guy.
It usually takes about two weeks for the drug to kick in, but it happened faster for my son – maybe because he was already on a lower dose for quite some time. Also, make sure you are giving it to him on an empty stomach (2 hours after eating) and 30 minutes before a full meal. I was initially doing this wrong – waiting to long to feed. The full meal 30 minutes after giving the medicine actually activates the drug.

Good luck! Glad you found us!!

dosing info can be found from link above- 7.5mgs total for the day is pretty low…

InactiveThanks for the welcome and the great info. I am definitely going to call my ds’ doc tomorrow and ask about an increase in meds. I always thougth that prevacid was a one time thing so didn’t realize that I would be watching for the reflux to come back. It also seems like he is on a low dose so maybe just going up to a full tab (15mg) will be enough. He loves his solids but the bottles are disasterous. He has silent reflux and fortunately his doc listens to mommy intuition as he doesn’t spit up much so I am hoping she will listen to this also. When does it usually get better?

InactiveGetting alittle better for us at 7 months. My daughter has been on 15 mgs. of prevacid since 2 weeks. 7.5 is a really low dose! Now at 17 pounds she is on 30 mgs split 3x a day. Glad you have a doc that is listening! Silent reflux is tricky, all that regulping, sneezing, hiccoughing, and gagging! We had much success when we started thickening the bottles with oatmeal and simply thick.
Ohh, like Christine said. Give on empty stomach, then wait 30 mins, and activate it at the 30 mins mark with a bottle or meal.

InactiveSeems like ds’ dose is much lower. We are going in this afternoon to see the doc and hopefully she will increase it. I was hoping she would do it over the phone but no luck!!!! I think if he just went up to 15 mg that would do it. I am guessing the jump in weight in the past 3 mths has been the problem. He has been on this 7.5mg since Jan3rd and I just thought that prevacid did not need to be increased. Shows what I know…
