InactiveI could use some advice. I posted on another board and was encouraged to come here. At the end of this, I’ve added some to my post about what doesn’t seem to fit reflux.
*Being a mom of 4, I’m typically not stumped about things – but this has me.
Our
doctor wants to do a modified barium swallow and x-rays on our 6 week
old. dx: vomiting – possible reflux. I’ve read this test isn’t real
reliable and I’m not convinced it is reflux. But without, she won’t
treat the baby. The baby vomits 1-2 times a day and may go 2-3
days with nothing in between. The baby isn’t always fussy before
vomiting, sometimes it just happens. This happens on nothing but breast
milk. (As in no gas drops or anything for 1-2 weeks and it was
happening periodically.) It happens 75% of the time after being given
mylicon drops. I thought there was a reaction. Then I tried gripe
water. It happens 75% of the time after getting that. I got rid of
that. I was given nystatin for the babies mouth since I’m getting
re-occurent mastitis and yeast. The baby has taken this 2 times and the
past 2 times has vomited within 30 seconds or less of having it.Does
anyone have any thoughts or experiences? Could this be reflux? When we
give the baby things other than milk, the baby barfs very quickly. If
the baby vomits the feeding, it is within 30-45 mins. or less.It is so peculiar to me because it comes and goes. I’m getting worried…..
I
also don’t want to put my little one through any unnecessary tests. I
don’t even know how the baby will keep down the barium swallow.Should
I get a second opinion? I’ve never done that before. The test is
monday, but I’m thinking of canceling and taking the baby elsewhere
first.*****My baby DOES NOT fight me to eat and eats well and gains well. They are gassy and fussy, but I don’t find it exceptionally unusual and can or can not be fussy prior to vomiting.**** Can vomiting ever be normal?

InactiveI think vomiting can be normal. If your babies not fussy after the vomitiing spells I’d say it’s probably not reflux, but then again I’m sure all cases are different. I had some friends whose baby spit up all the time and a lot and there was nothing wrong with their baby. My understanding is all babies have reflux.
As far as the barium swallow goes I think it’s a waste of time and money, but if your baby does have reflux and that is the only way your ped will treat your baby then I would do it. The test won’t show wheather or not your baby has reflux, but can show other things. It is actually an easy procedure. Your baby drinks some stuff and then they lay the baby down and watch his body react to it. I think through x-raying him. Sorry, I’m not good at explaining things. If your baby won’t take a bottle you can call ahead and ask for a syringe to give it. If you do decide to do it the only downfall is your baby can get very constipated. I have heard you can give your baby some water after the test, but I would think just nursing him would do the trick. We did the test with my older son and he got very constipated, but at that point I had stopped breastfeeding. With my second I didn’t make that mistake and he did so much better. Breastmilk is so good for reflux babies. So, keep up the good work and I really hope you get some answers. The ladies on here are great and so knowledgeable.January 12, 2008 at 8:00 pm #47275hellbennt
Keymasterhmmm…
if there’s no pain with the reflux, then I wouldn’t think your baby would need medication…how are the baby’s stools?normal, mustardy, seedy breastfed baby stools?if not, then perhaps you can alter your diet to help your baby…The Upper GI, (also called a barium swallow?) is good to look for structural abnormalities,
it is *not* good to verify reflux: it is a snapshot in time if you were, so if baby doesn’t happen to reflux at that particular time of the test then a dr might be quick to dismiss you & tell you reflux isn’t there/isn’t bad- the way to show reflux is a ph probe, where the actual length (duration) & frequency (how often) of reflux episodes are recorded (I think actually the acidity is measured as well? Thus the ‘ph’ part of the test?)…if you do get the Upper GI done or the Swallow Study, find out how to contact the actual x-ray technician, bcse if you’re breastfeeding the amount of time that you need to have baby fasting before the procedure is actually less than what ‘they’ will tell you- tell the technician (somehow?) that baby is breastfed and ask how long before the test you can feed your baby (breastmilk is digested faster than formula)January 12, 2008 at 9:00 pm #47280Anonymous
InactiveNo one mentioned any sort of fasting to me…..
I think I’m going to do the test. My concern if not only the vomiting, but the immediate vomiting of anything that isn’t breastmilk within moments or mins. of taking it. We’ve done the nystatin 3 times today and it’s been vomited back up in less than 30 secs.
The stools are thick and stretchy, like a grilled cheese sandwich.
They aren’t seedy anymore.bargainshopper2008-01-12 21:02:24

Keymasterok, not to be gross (but I am, LOL!),
but by ‘stretchy’ do/could you mean mucousy?if so, you might want ot check out mspi?January 13, 2008 at 8:51 am #47287Anonymous
InactiveI think mucousy *might* be accurate. What is mspi?
edited to add: I figured out what mspi was.
