InactiveHow much rice cereal do you guys add to the bottle, my daughter is 5 wks old. Dr said 1 tsp in 4 oz, but everything i have read says 1 tbs per oz. 1 tsp doesnt seem like it makes much of a difference. Also, do you add cereal to every bottle? Dr said to add cereal to night time feeds, but she is also reluxing all day. She is on zantac and reglan now after her swallow study today. Also is it ok to use the t cut nipples so it isnt so hard for her to get the milk with the cereal added?

Keymasterhi & welcome!if she had a swallow study, then you should have been told what exact consistancy the formula needs to be- there are thickening agents like Simply Thick that come in the thicknesses they find baby needs in the Swallow Study, like ‘nectar’ consistancy, ‘honey’ consistancy etc
reglan and zantac seem to be the first meds prescribed by peds, “Just Because.” It’s probably just what they were taught and that’s that. Jonah was even prescribed reglan in the nicu and they had DONE testing and they pretty much knew he didn’t have Delayed Gastric Emptying (DGE). Personally, in retrospect, I think they gave it to him to cover their butts legally- he was having apnea episodes (stopped breathing) and rather than have a dead newborn on their hands, they figured the possible risks of reglan, and the help it MIGHT provide, sure outweighed the apnea episodes.anyway, there’s a lot of bad hype about reglan, but it has worked wonders for some babies, with diagnosed/VERIFIED DGE, in small doses. there ARE other motility drugs out there such as bethanecol (sp?) and erythromyacin (sp?)…I feel that if a baby has been given the stomach emptying scan (this is not just an Upper GI- it’s a specific test looking for DGE) and doesn’t respond well to other drugs, then by all means trying reglan is worth it…hopefully the zantac dose is high enough
:Zantac dosing- my/other’s question: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=9539&PID=82914#82914I have a LOT MORE to say

InactiveHi there, I am new to this forum also. So far it has been helpful to me. I started thickening bottles when my baby girl was about 3 months old. I was told by her dietician that it was 1 tsp per every 2 ounces. It did seem to help her. She didn’t spit up as much and actually started to gain weight. My Ainslie was diagnosed with GERD & milk allergy. She is presently on Neocate and prevacid. We are seeing a GI doctor in February. She is 5 months old now and weighs 13 ILBS. It has been a rough road so far and I am praying to god the GI can help us. Good luck! Hope I helped you out.
