Justice has been waking so much for, well forever. The gentle sleep training I did with him worked wonders, then he started getting his I teeth and that all went out the window. Then he got sick, then his 2 yrs molars are coming in, and now on top of the molars he had a bad reaction to our dairy trial and is now refluxing again. I am allergic to dairy and beef and if I have either I will have bad acid reflux. The reason I think it’s reflux is because he is fine until he lays down to sleep. He can lay down for about an hour and then wakes up coughing and can’t stop. Last night he even tryed laying down standing up. That was my first clue. He stood on the wood on the foot board of the bed and layed his head on the bed. So, I tred propping him up on a pillow. He didn’t like that so he layed back down flat on the bed and proceeded to throw up. So, I decided to try some mylanta and then realized we didn’t have anymore since I just gave it a friend so we tryed maalox. Amazing enough the coughing stopped after about 20 to 30 min and he slept fine the rest of the night. I took him to the dr today to see what he thoght and he agrees that he thinks it’s an allergy reaction and that he is probably refluxing. So, the dr has me giving him zyrtec twice a day for a month to see if it makes a difference. He didn’t really tell me what to do about the reflux though. I have maalox and also pepcid complete, but I have no idea how much of either to give him. Last night I gave him 5 ml or 1 tsp of maalox, but I’m not sure if that is too much. What do you ladies think? Should I even be trying to treat what may or may not be reflux? He is 20 months old now and weighs 29 lbs. Any thoughts?

Thank you so much Laura. We were dairy free until recently and it definantly made a difference. I just don’t understand why they wake up so much when they have it.

Good news! After having the zyrtec last night he slept from 8 until 6 am this morning without waking once. That hasn’t happened in a while. Also he finally ate today. He has just been nibbling here and there and not really eating. Today he ate 2 or 3 pancakes and some apple slices. Recently he hasn’t been eating even his favorite foods. I thought maybe he was just being picky. I think I am definantly going to get the allergy testing done. Zyrtec only works for enviromental allergies right? Hmmm, it’s all confusing to me.

Hi Shelby. I haven’t been around much lately but I saw your post and wanted to say “hi.” I’ve been having some issues with Myles lately that make me suspect that he is having a reflux flare as well. He began waking several times a night about 6 weeks ago. He’s been sick twice in that 6 week period but he has been fine for a few weeks now but still is waking at night and in the wee hours of the morning like he used to. During the day he frequently says, “tummy hurts” but he points to his chest and he often says “uckies in mouth” when I go to him at night. He’s drinking water like it’s going out of style. I finally began putting 2 and 2 together and thinking reflux…..

So I think I’ll try Pepcid Complete for a while and see if he sleeps better and stops complaining about his tummy hurting and “uckies” in his mouth. I remember Dr. Phillips said an infant can have 1/2 a tablet, so that’s what I will try. I gave him 1/2 a tablet last night and he did sleep better, waking only once briefly at 3:45. I do have some Prevacid left from his infancy but I hate to use it because of the empty stomach followed by a meal thing…

I’m not sure if Zyrtec works for milk allergy or not. It does cause sleepiness though.

Anyway, I hope you find the answer for Justice. He sure is cute! Are you still breastfeeding him? If so, WOW!

Hi Shelby and Christine!

I am sorry to hear about your boys! But I may be in the group with ya’ll too!! UGH! Shanes been moving alot more at night.. getting hiccups during day.. and waking earlier.. not sure if reflux.. but wondering. I think for the rest of our lives we will be thinking “reflux” even if it isn’t..probably until they are 18 or so 😉

Anyhow.. Shelby.. I wouldnt start the prevacid back up.. but I would do a pepcid complete or mylanta thing as well.. until the diary is out of his system. I agree with Christine.. I really dont want to go the prevacid route again if possible .. its a big pain for older kids and pain to wean back off. For the maalox.. i am not sure.. but mylanta i give half a teaspoon to shane or 5 ml’s. And pepcid complete I would give half of one too.

I hope the zyrtec continues to help.. and more reflux meds arent necessary!

Thanks again ladies. Yes, Christine I am still nursing Justice. I decided I would try to nurse him for two years. He is in the process of weaning himself right now. At least that is what I have been told. He only nurses twice a day at this point. Even those times he sometimes doesn’t nurse. My little boy is growing up so fast.

Hi,

I’m really late seeing this thread, but wanted to mention that Bryce is on Zyrtec too and it has really helped him. For some reason he started getting a constant runny nose and with all that drainage in his throat it would make his reflux flare and make his vomiting really bad. We decided to try Zyrtec and it helped so much. He’s still on the Zyrtec, although I don’t know if he even needs it anymore. I never did find out what it was that was causing his runny nose. (He still has a runny nose all the time even on the Zyrtec, but it doesn’t bother him).

I hope you can figure out what’s causing this flare and the allergies.
