My son was born 4 weeks early. He is now 3 weeks old. He was having what I thought was major gas pains. I took him to the doc and she changed his formula (breastfeeding and suplementing formula once a day) to a soy based. She also put him on zantac. He is now showing signs of silent reflux and screams in pain. He only stops when he has a bottle in his mouth or I am breastfeeding. He could eat every 30 mins.

Is this normal? How long does it take for Zantac to work? Any other advice would be greatly appreciated. I am so upset that he is in pain it breaks my heart.

I’m sorry your little one is in so much pain!

If you’re switching formulas, then you might want to think about your diet as well?

about 40% of babies who cannot tolerate milk proteins cannot tolerate soy either, so perhaps the soy is bothering him?

if you take all milk proteins (even hidden ingredients like casin & whey- there are more) and all soy proteins out of your diet and give a bottle of nutrimigen or alumentim and then if after 2 weeks you see an improvement then you’ll know it’s milk and soy…it’s hard though and it actuall might NOT be milk or soy that’s bothering him…

so confusing, huh?? it’s actually not so bad (confusion-wise) & we’re all here to help you

how much does he weigh? I can help you calculate how high his zantac dose can go…

zantac can take a few days to see the results.

My Alana was also a comfort feeder and could have eaten constantly. this continued until she was on her good dose of prevacid. I would work on getting your dr to prescribe you this. If on a good dose of this and still probs then you know you need to go with investigating the milk allergy theory. For Alana, she needed both the meds and an hypoallergic formula (my pead didn’t even try soy because of what Laura said about many bubs also being allergic to).

Alana is now med free and on normal dairy so there is an end to this (she was also a five week prem so I know its hard enough from the very beginning without this extra stuff).

We had a lot of luck with taking Alana to the Chiropractor for her gas pains.
