Well Gavin was doing better and all of the sudden is doing worst. He is crying more, arching, looks in pain when pooping. I have been on TED for a little over 2 weeks and have not introduced any new foods. He is still breastfed eventhough his doc wanted me to put him on alimentum.

He is on 15mg prevacid solutab once a day. He cries mostly at night and that is when we give it to him.

He is a little shy of 6 weeks and is 11lbs. Do you think he is outgrowing the prevacid dose and it needs to be uped? His doc refuses to give him more than 15mg and said the GI doctor won’t see me until I have given Gavin Alimentum for at least two weeks and if it doesn’t work, then the GI doctor will see us. He talked to the GI doctor and that is what he told him. We tried giving Gavin Alimentum once and he threw up. He will not drink it. He hates it.

Please help, do you think it is acid reflux flaring up and meds need to be increased? Why won’t pedeatricians increase prevacid dosing beyond 15mg? Is is Prevacid dangerous to little babies in bigger doses?

I have a bunch of samples and a script from my own physician for me since I have acid reflux. I am considering giving Gavin half a 15mg dose in the morning for a total of 22mg per day but I am scared because his doc is totally against it.

Even the GI said no mor than 15mg to the pedeatrician. I am so confused because I get so many conflicting information. Marci-Kids recomends up to 27mg for his age and weight but my doc said that guy is paid by the drug companies.

I don’t think “That guy” works for the drug companies, and in fact he sold the drug so I doubt he makes any money by promoting it. And he still is willing to help babies. Many moms on this site have emailed Dr. Phillips and asked for his advice. Some have even flown to see him. Others have asked him to call their doctors and he has done so. I think your doctor is a cynic and he is wrong about Dr. Phillips and marci-kids.

My son was in hellish pain and he was developing a feeding aversion. Life around here was unbearable. Things did not improve until we finally put him on the marci-kids’ dose of Prevacid which was 10mgs/3 times per day. I was able to convince my son’s doctor by sharing the information from marci-kids with her, but it sounds like your doctor has already formed an opinion, so that may not work. I’d look for another doctor. Family doctors are often more liberal with Prevacid dosing for infants because they see adults with reflux so often. They can be more sympathetic. Myles’ doc is a family doc.

Also, you wouldn’t be the first mom to use her own rx to help her baby.

I definitley would have done it if had to.

In some ways I wish dr philips was paid by drug companies bcse he deserves it! He and his research team are the ones who are doing research about PPIs and infants. he is a pharmaceutical dr so he knows his chemicals/drugs, etc. he works with ped GIs as well to help babies w/ GERD. they developed caracream & chocobase first, but wound up selling the (or actually a variation of) the formula to the company who makes Zegerid. Bcse zegerid is made w/ the generic (or maybe it’s the brand) of Prilosec, they can no longer sell caracream and chocobase (bummer!), bcse they signed a non-compete agreement & caracream/chocobase can be used w/ either prilosec or prevacid. so, zegerid is just prilosec…

anyway, my whole point is that he doesn’t make or sell anything that I know of- he ‘just’ researches…

Thanks for the replies. I increased his dose to add another 7.5mg in the morning. So now we give him 15mg solutab at night and 7.5mg in the morning. All on an empty stomach and we wait for 30-45minutes to feed him afterwards. I am going to give it a couple of weeks and if he still hasn’t improved, I will resort to giving him Alimentum or Nutramigen like the doc suggested. He said that is the first thing that the GI is going to suggest per his conversation with him over the phone.

I am still on the TED. I have been on it for close to 3 weeks now and no improvment.

I have also started noticing these dark specs in his poop. Like what somebody described as coffee grounds. Is that blood? I told the pedeatrician and he said blood is only detected in the lab.

Also how fast after I feed do we consider that his stomach is empty? Is it 3 hours? Is it 2 hours or less? We feed him every 3 hours more or less, sometimes sooner.

I’ve already posted that I don’t like your pediatrician- he’s holding your baby’s health & happiness hostage! If you won’t stop breastfeeding and give your baby formula, then he won’t help you!

of course it’s up to YOU and of course this is only MY OPINION…

well, if it can only be detected in the lab, well get it to the lab…ok easy for me to say…I’m just worked up over the arrogance & egomania of this man!

ok, here I am being more peaceful.

sigh.

what do baby’s stools look like? mustardy & seedy? any change since the diet?

any behavioral changes since the diet?

any rashes or excema that’s cleared up since the diet?

if there IS blood in the stool, then ok maybe it’s time for an elemental formula, but that would be neocate or elacare, not alimentum. after 3 weeks on TED, your milk is more free of milk proteins than alimentum formula…

after all of this it just might not be your diet

I hope the extra prevacid helps. if it does, then I’d look for another doctor to help give you what your baby needs…

Thank you Laura. He is a good doc and very caring. Part of it also is that the GI doctor is at least an hour and a half away from us. There is none in our town. So he wanted us to try the Alimentum before going for the GI consult. The baby hates the taste of it. I have no idea in hell how I am going to get him to take it:(

Does anybody know of a good pediatric GI in Orlando, Florida?

Also do the black ground coffee specs signify blood and intolerance to my milk? I haven’t changed anything in my TED diet. The only change we have made is his prevacid dose. His poops are back to green, mucousy and stringy:(

If I were you I’d call la leche & ask your questions

if it IS blood, you might want to get a dr to prescribe you the pancrease that I posted about somewhere a while back…your local la leche league would know of a dr who is more ‘pro’ breastfeeding…

Ok, I have one more thought… how is the breastfeeding going? Still block feeding???

Also, with the upped Prevacid dose, and the green stringy poo… I THINK I’ve read of one mom who said that the green stringy poo is an indication of lactose intolerance. The solutabs have lactose in them, so perhaps he is reacting to that???? I know it’s just one more thing to add to the reflux puzzle, but maybe a different form of Prevacid would be worth a shot?

Hi mybuttercup. I am the mom that Laura had mentioned that lives in Orlando. My first thought was exactly what Naomi just said about the Solutabs. My daughter could not take them because they have lactose and she was allergic to milk. Yes, blood in the stool can be visible (and looks like coffee grinds) but that means it is pretty severe. My daughter’s blood was visible too and confirmed many times by doctors that it was in fact blood. Unfortunately, it was our pulmonologist that we loved SO much, not our GI. We saw Dr. Bornstein as our GI (who WAS at Nemours but since left). He was very good at what he does, he just has no bed side manner. I can speak very strongly AGAINST you seeing Dr. Bakarva (can’t remember the right spelling). If that is who you are seeing, run and run fast!!!!!! Please let me know if I can help in anyway. We are through reflux and as of August, Katie has even outgrown all of her food allergies. So I promise, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Thank you so so much. I think it is Dr Bornstein that my doc is referring us to. And I am pretty sure that I see little dark specs like coffee grounds in his poop. His stools were sent to the lab but didn’t show any blood. I am going to request that we do the test again. Can you please send me your email address if you don’t mind. I have a couple more questions for you. Did you end up putting your DD on Neocate?

I meant to add too, that there were a few times we saw black specks like that, and it happened after vaccinations. I could never tell if it was a vaccine reaction, or if maybe his tummy couldn’t handle the Tylenol I was giving him for pain/fever. Any chance he has had vaccines or Tylenol lately??

Could anyone tell me what Neocate is? My son is 7.5 months old and has an apparent protein allergy (told to us by a nurse practioner at the GI clinic), is on 15 MG of Prevacid as well as Nutramigen. But I was reading a post that said Prevaicd has lactose in it? My son has had a heck of a time with bottles, cannot keep even oatmeal watered down in his tummy.
