Just Diagnosed

It is not true that all reflux babies gain poor. My baby has gained a bunch and he has acid reflux. The first thing I would do is visit marci-kids.com to see the appropriate dose for prevacid for his weight. Is he on prevacid solutab? 7.5mg sounds too low. My son was started on 15mg from the get go when he was just 4 weeks old.

My son gains wt great so that isn’t always true, some babies are comfort eaters so they gain really well. They can tell he has severe reflux from the scan b/c usually reflux doesn’t show up on the scan so if it does then it usually is pretty bad. Make sure you give the prevacid on an empty stomcah and wait 30-60 min to feed which I know is hard at his age, but it works better that way if he is eating every 2-3 hrs as I would imagine at that age then I would wait at least 1.5hrs after a feed to give him the med. It can take up to 2 weeks to see the med working. You can try Mylanta cherry supreme between doses to help with the pain, but this can cause loose stools so don’t freak out about that. We love gas drops but they don’t help for all babies. You may also find that the dose is too low, but give it time to make sure. If you get a higher dose I would split it into 2-3 doses. For right now I would give it in the evening since you say that is when your lo has the most trouble. I would elevate the crib mattress and if you feel comfortable doing it (I didn’t until my lo could roll over), you can put them to sleep on their tummy but that is a personal decision.
