InactiveI’m starting a new thread here because I had a meltdown last week and posted in BOO HOO which has turned into a ‘starting solids’ discussion. Thought maybe could get some insights from everyone.
After meeting allergist and Ian testing negative, we’ve started solids. We got ok’s to start one food a week from a list of 5 (squash, sweet potato, carrot, peaches, and apple). Now since Ian’s hospital visit 4 weeks ago-he’s been having loose/watery stool and congestion. Some mucus (but we were on antibiotics and changed reflux meds-now back to prevacid). No one seems to know what was causing it and everyone said -allergist, not allergy to elecare/prevacid-gi-not sure, allergy?, and ped-talk to gi. Infuriating so we forged ahead with Sweet potato after a couple of days of gas and fussiness, it started to go away and he seemed fine. Now his already loose stool has turned to complete water(but he’s happy as a clam). So we’re taking him off. (I SO apologize to repeat info from BOO HOO thread but just in case you weren’t reading that one…). So we’re taking him off SP until we speak to GI. Ped insists rice will help us, Allergist said although he tested neg. she’d recommend no because his system is so weak.
Problem here is WHO DO I GO TO! Everyone’s saying ‘not their area.’ Meanwhile if we don’t get this under control, how will we ever start solids. He was having poo problems way before hospital. I know others have had confusing/mixed signals so any insights I’d appreciate. Amber was kind enough to tell me Tyler has loose stools on Elecare (I think we’re the only one’s using it) and that could be true…but Ian has had normal stool on it so again, I’m so confused. Suggestions?? He’s been off antibiotics now 10days and no one seems to think he’s allergic to them.
Also, btw ph probe on prevacid said it’s totally controlled as I figured. Still upset they made him go through that. Damage on endoscopy had to have been from stomach virus proj vomiting. Should I insist at looking at his back door? As I always thought the issue was south anyways..

InactiveHe’s only 6 months old, correct? Why don’t you just completely stop solids since they are clearly causing him an issue and re-start in a few months? By then, he may have no problems at all.
No doctor is an expert in the area of solids. Each of them will have a different opinion about when/how to start. Each baby is an individual and no doctor is going to be able to tell you what foods will work best for your baby.

InactiveI agree with Stacy. It’s so hard for you to know right now what’s
causing problems and Ian only just turned 6 months a few days ago. If
it were me, I would stop all solids and do the probiotics for a while
and give only that and his Elecare (and Prevacid of course) and give
him time to heal and mature and adjust. Then maybe in a month start
again – once you know he’s feeling better otherwise? Then at least it’s
not such a guessing game.No rush to start solids – we learned that the hard way here.
If you are concerned there are still some “back door” issues – it can’t
hurt to see if you can get that figured out first too. But again, I’d
probably give the probiotics 2 weeks first (unless he gets worse) to
see if that helps things before doing more testing – since you say he’s
happy as a clam.March 31, 2006 at 11:09 am #5023Anonymous
InactiveWe were not successful on solids until 11 months old and even then we went so slowly! But, waiting that long gave us much success…….
I would do what the ladies said and stop completely for a couple of weeks. Just formula and Prevacid. Then if things go back to normal, you can try again. If you have the same result, you know it’s solids issues, and you can just lay off them for a while.
Hang in there!

InactiveI totally understand what all of you are saying and I SO am not in any rush, believe me. But that actually isn’t what I’m really concerned about. My main concern is what is causing the stool problem in the first place-the solids frustration comes from-that until I get it figured out-how will I ever tell what’s affecting him and what isn’t. It’s just that the pooping issues have been going on for sooo long … I just talked to Elecare and they say it is processed seperately and they test every batch before clearance. I really don’t think it’s that. I’m going to call prevacid next although dr.s don’t think it’s that either.
I just want to be proactive with this as we’re now on 2 months with poop problems and sooner or later, I’ll have to start solids, right? Hate to ignore something that may be an issue.

InactiveI still think the stool issues can be related to the antibiotics and
his need for probiotics and nothing other than Elecare and Prevacid to
heal for a little while. After some time, you may likely have success
on solids. Prior to this, his only real pooping issue was that he
wouldn’t go for a few days, right? Because I think the bearing down and
wriggling could have been from the acid and ulcers – I’ve heard that
acid and ulcers at the base of the esophagus can create gas like
symptoms. If it were me, I’d do just Elecare, Prevacid and probiotics for 2
weeks. If no improvement I might think about a barium enema. If
improvement, I’d probably give it another 2 weeks before starting
solids slowly.knb182006-3-31 13:23:40

InactiveIf its not the sweet potato then the only thing I could think of is a stomach virus. Tylers poos are mucousy on Elecare but not watery unless he has some sort of virus.
Our ped GI is not too worried about the mucous if its the only symptom and he seems quite happy otherwise. She has said before that the mucous can be a sign of irritation of the intestines which can take quite some time to heal. If however the mucous comes along with a rash, crying, nightwakings, bottle refusal etc then it would point more towards an allergy.
You could try stopping the SP and see if anything changes, but if the problems were there before, then it probably wont make any difference. It might just take him some time to heal.
I would also consider a trial of a different form of prevacid or zegerid, that way you can rule out any problems with the solutab.
Just one other thing. Everything seems to go in cycles for us. One week Tyler sleeps really well and eats and has no reflux, and then the next he is terrible. Some weeks his bm’s are perfect and other weeks they are like wet paint. What I mean is that things are always up and down so dont get too worried about the solids, there will be good and bad weeks and you just have to keep going and it doesnt matter how many foods you try, its about learning the skills of eating and enjoying it.
Hope you can get the poop problems sorted out. Keep us posted.

InactiveThank you everyone-yes, the ups and downs are the most frustrating.
K-we started having problems with bearing down-wriggling during eating two months ago but had only small watery, loose stools back then which led us to believe constipation. But remember after enemas, laxatives, etc. nothing but tiny watery movements. No mucous. Mucous definitely came during antibiotic and has come and gone (unless it is prevacid-but no one seems to think that-but again who knows). Once in a blue moon we would have a normal movement but there was awhile when he only had tiny loose movements once in a week or week and a half. And they saw stool in xray and during flex sig. So much so that they couldn’t even perform the biopsy.
So spoke to GI and DH spoke with Allergist. GI suggested (like ped) to do one week of rice to see if we can start getting stools looking more normal THEN if not, go forward with Barium Upper or Enema depending on if we think stools are problem because of higher digestion or lower digestion. She said although mucous came during antibiotic it makes no sense why Ian still (although drinking alot) is still very uncomfortable while he feeds and watery(and I mean watery sometimes)/loosness for 2 months now. Allergist spoke with dh and said she doesn’t at all object to rice but she was V. concerned that Ian’s movements are only once every 1 or 2 days. She said she thinks the sweet potatoes just aggravated an existing problem (which we both agree there). Any fiber to the diet both GI and allergist said would make loose stool more watery. Not to mention the vomiting he did week before endoscopy when Ian was at height of issues-we all dismissed as stomach flu (which it may or may not have been). And then she said the dreaded-hirschsprung’s disease. She said at this point her strong suggestion would be for the enema to rule it out as it’s not normal-good temperment or not. Ian could be getting relief and then clogging again. So there you have it. DH and I discussed and we’re going to try one week of rice (just tsp or two a day)and see if things start to bind but if not, enema. Neither of us are crazy about the radiation but he is still v. uncomfortable and the stools are highly unusual. Antibiotics or not, it was an issue prior.
IF anyone has had one done, I’ll take any info I can get on it! Poor little thing has been through so much but I really examined my feelings/gut and am confident we’re doing it for the right reasons to make him feel better and not just rule one more thing out.

InactiveAt least it sounds like you have a plan. I hope that you dont have to get all that testing done, but in a way, it would be good to make sure its not anything more serious. Although Tylers BM’s are mucousy, he has never been constipated, and always goes once or twice a day like clockwork (except for one horrible week on soy where he went about 10 times a day).
I will have my fingers crossed for Ian and I hope things improve quickly.

InactiveGlad you have a plan.

Just wanted to let you know that although we didn’t have stool issues with our baby, the food issues and other reflux symptoms got so complicated, that after beginning solids just before 7 mos, I stopped completely around 8 mos and exclusively breastfed until 10 mos…..just to know that I could control the factors going into his body and symptoms a little more. I also went round and round, is it meds, is it dosing, is it what he’s eating, is it what I’m eating, etc. etc. etc. My son eats VERY WELL now, and is 18 mos. At the time I was a wee bit worried that I might be affecting his progress with solids, etc. but knew that we had bigger fish to fry so to speak and needed to figure out these much more serious issues with his health and reflux first.
In your case, it sounds like solids can REALLY wait, and if you held off solids for a month, and he wasn’t on antibiotics for a month, and you tried probiotics, and did this testing you are talking about….you might have a whole new perspective. Also, when worrying about food problems and intestinal issues, etc. it seems like the longer you wait to introduce solids, the BETTER things will be. Their little systems are so sensitive anyway, you get a baby like mine or yours and it sounds like they are SUPER sensitive. Also, my ped told me, and I quote, “allergy tests on babies and kids this young (under age two) are notoriously unreliable” he then explained that I should trust my gut instinct with how my son reacts to foods, and not necessarily just run with the allergy testing results.
I really hope things improve.

InactiveThanks Anne. I’m so glad to hear your son is eating well and growing great! Encouraging!!
Yes, I agree sensitive stomach definitely. And, I’ve heard that before as well with allergy testing and by no means am going to town. But I also feel somewhat confident with my doctors here in New York City. We go to Mount Sinai and they have a world-reknowned allergy team. Their credits and case study work is impressive so I tend to take stock in them. They said actually you can tell alot at 6 months but more conclusive at 1 year. Allergy testing does not however mean they won’t be intolerant to something so although they may not be allergic to say sweet potato, they could be intolerant(so if you kept feeding the baby the food, they then in turn could become allergic). That’s how they explained it to me anyways.
Also, I’m not sure if you realize but SP are the first solids (other then rice thickening bottle) we’ve tried. Ian’s been having bm problems (watery-loose stools which really arent’ very common) for months now so we just want to continue to work forward on figuring that out so when we are at a point when we HAVE to start trying some things we can see clear signs of intolerance or not. Everything now is just too cloudy. After testing, we may find out nothing’s positive and just have to be super careful but since this is pretty rare we all want to rule out something scary.
That being said, if anyone here has a child with watery/loose bm’s I’d love to hear from you as it would be comforting to compare notes for sure. One last thing, this is not diarrhea because he only has them once every day or two and in past-sometimes not for a week.

InactiveTracy – maybe hold off on ALL solids for now (I don’t think I’d even do
the rice) and do probiotics and Elecare and Prevacid only and do the
testing and then maybe in one month, when you know better from the
testing and see if the probiotics help him heal, you can restart foods?I know this has been going on a long time, but I think it is possible
that the testing (barium enema probably) could give you answers and
that the probiotics could make a big difference. Were you on
antibiotics while pregnant? Did Ian have antibiotics shortly after
birth? Or was this the first time he’d been on them? And didn’t you say he didn’t pass all his meconium in the hospital?
They probably should check for Hirschsprung’s at this point – even just
if to rule it out.April 1, 2006 at 9:24 am #5120Anonymous
InactiveI would say i would probably try the rice to see if that will help make things a little more solid b/c at least if that doesn’t work they will take it very seriously and get to the bottom of this issue! My trick to get dr’s to really listen to me and take action is that i start crying and say i just cannot take it anymore! Though at this point they are really listening to you and your dh which is good. Keep us posted on how the rice goes!

InactiveArrggh- just typed a long post and lost it!
Tracy, I would try the probiotics. Antibiotics can worsen loose stools in people who are prone to problems already by destroying the good bacteria. This can start as long as 2 weeks after finishing a course of antibiotics.
Sarah- funny you mention the crying b/c I do everything I can not to cry. I find it just makes them take me less seriously. They think that I’m just being neurotic or am a stress case, or sometimes they seem to suggest PPD. I find this is more true if the doc is a man. Your doctors must be more sensitive than mine.
