InactiveHi! My daughter started prevacid solutabs 15mg this past Monday…and so far it’s not working. I know that I was told that it will take about 2 weeks for it to kick in, so I’m trying to be patient. I tried to split the 15mg up and do 2 doses, one in the morning and one at night, but doing that she screams all day. If I give her the whole 15mg in the morning, at least I get a fairly happy baby pretty much all day…so my question is, if I give her the whole thing in the morning, what can I do at night? I’ve read that alot of you all think that pepcid complete is great. Do any of you know how much to give a baby that weighs 10lbs? Also, I have pepcid complete at home. Are you all giving the adult pepcid complete tablets…is there a childrens? Over the counter? What about giving zantac? Is that over the counter zantac? And, has anyone at 6 weeks and 10lbs taken more than 15mg of prevacid? I’m desperate!!
Please help!Candacecmommy 2008-05-13 00:12:28 May 13, 2008 at 8:27 am #51399Anonymous
InactiveI know what you are going through. I just checked the marci-kids website and she can have 7.5 mg three times a day. I do not know if your doc will prescribe that. Maybe the 15mg in am and 7.5 mg in pm. I never used the Pepcid complete. I know alot of the moms here use Mylanta Cherry Supreme, they say not within 4 hrs of the Prevacid.
I am sure one of the veterans will have some more advice, they are awesome here.KarenMay 13, 2008 at 9:56 am #51401Anonymous
InactiveWe have a doctors apt today at 2:30…so if anyone can give me any advice before then, that’d be great! I want to be able to go in with some knowledge this time. Last Monday, I had no clue about reflux when she told me what was going on. They gave me prevacid solutabs and didn’t even tell me to give it on an empty stomach and wait to feed for at least 30 minutes!! I just need something! My husband and I go back and forth. I want to hold her all of the time because I’m constantly thinking that she’s crying out of pain and my husband says that I’m spoiling her. We are in need of a good day.
Are there any test that I should ask for?cmommy2008-05-13 09:57:17

InactiveI don’t think you can spoil a 6 week old, so hold away! If that helps, that is what you do.
As far as the doctor, I think Karen had some good advice. I think you should tell the doctor your experience that how when you give it all in the morning, you have better days but it “wears off ” but if you split it, it is not enough of a dose to see a good difference, so can you give all 15 mgs in the morning, and try to do 7.5 mgs at night and see if that helps? I think that would be a good test. Also, are you formula feeding or bFing? Formula change could be a choice if you are formula feeding, or elimination diet if you are breastfeeding.Hang in there!!Ann MarieMay 13, 2008 at 10:28 am #51403Anonymous
InactiveI’m formula feeding and we just switched to nutramigen this past Wednesday. I am going to suggest another 7.5 dose…but can I suggest zantac until the prevacid starts working?

InactiveOf course! You just need to space out the zantac from the prevacid. I know Laura’s intro discusses it, but I think it has to be at least 3 or 4? hours apart? Can’t remember exactly….. I also used Mylanta cherry supreme as needed. I think at that age, I only did one or two mls up to 6 times a day. Nutramigen can work just fine, but if that is still the issue you can go to Neocate which contains no milk proteins at all. (the nutramigen contains broken down proteins, but some babies can still detect it). I wouldn’t change formula yet as if you do too many changes, it is hard to tell what is and isn’t working.
I would ask for an additional 7.5 mgs at night in addition to the 15mgs in the morning, and see what the Dr. says about adding Zantac in between. If you have noticed that the 15 in the morning gives you better days, though, if you up the dose, you may not even need the Zantac, so if you are trying to negotiate with him, then I would go for the additional 7.5 at night and maybe try teh mylanta in between and not worry too much about the zantac.Hang in there! This can be so hard! I waited so much longer to look for help with my first, that you are doing such a great job trying to resolve this all for your baby so quickly! You are doing a great job, and again, if holding helps, then you do what works!!Ann MarieMay 13, 2008 at 10:56 am #51405Anonymous
InactiveCan anyone tell me is the zantac that you all are giving is over the counter or prescription?

InactiveWe use the Pepcid complete (berry flavored). You will need a pill cutter (I assume you already have one for Prevacid).
All I do is cut the Pepcid in half and dissolve it in about 2-3mls of water. You can smash the Pepcid up a little with a spoon. Then I suck up the liquid with an oral syringe and give it to my ds. We do the Prevacid in the am, afternoon and the Pepcid at bedtime. It works well for us.It is VERY IMPORTANT that you space the Pepcid or Zantac out at least 4 hours from the Prevacid. If you don’t, you will make the Prevacid less effective. On the formula, you’ll need to give it at least 2 weeks to see if it’s working or not. Also, the 2 weeks for the Prevacid to make sure it’s the formula and not the medicine. My ds is on Elecare (similar to Neocate) and it’s been a savior for us!Good luck!May 13, 2008 at 12:40 pm #51410Anonymous
InactiveOkay…so I gave her the 15mg prevacid this morning about 6:30am and she got a 3 ounce bottle down. Then here at 11:00 she acted hungry so she got another 3 ounces down, but then started acting really fussy like she was hurting…so I did the pepcid complete and within minutes she seemed like she was relieved. Now she’s playing, happily, in the floor. So, now I’m hoping that the doctor will allow us to add a 7.5mg dose of prevacid in the evening. I’m thinking that might be just right. According to MARCI-kids, she should be on another dose of 7.5mg. We’ll see!!
I’ll post a reply after I get back from the doctor to let you know what they think. Do alot of you all dose on your own?May 13, 2008 at 12:44 pm #51412Anonymous
InactiveI never dosed the prescription meds on my own as then I would have run out before I was due for a refill….. The non prescription meds, I ran by my doctor just so they know what I am doing. We have always had good relationships with our doctors, though. I think that is key! It sounds like your doctor will be willing to work with you, so you should be open with what you are doing….

InactiveSo, she said that before she prescribed anything else she wanted us to get a swallow test done. The earliest that they could get her scheduled is May 22nd…a week away!! So, can anyone tell me what a swallow test is and should I be prepared to see my baby hurt? Also, can I go ahead and give her 7.5mg of the prevacid at night or will this effect the results of the test?

InactiveThe swallow test that you are doing is probably the upper gi, not a swallow study. If it is an upper gi, they do strap the baby to the board, so they can’t move and they just feed a bottle of barium and watch on the xray screen to see if there are any abnormalities. Sometimes the test shows reflux and sometimes it doesn’t but if it doesn’t, that doesn’t mean your child doesn’t have reflux, they just may not have refluxed at that point in time. the prevacid will not affect the results of the test. Some babies have a hard time passing the barium and they become a bit constipated after, but that’s it. It is a pretty quick test as well. The hardest part is holding them off of food before the test so they are hungry enough to take the barium.
Hang in there!!! Can you do Mylanta or Zantac for suppliment until the test?May 13, 2008 at 6:58 pm #51429hellbennt
Keymastera ‘swallow’ test looks at how baby is swallowing- how baby can handle different thicknesses of liquids & if any is getting nto the lungs (aspiration)…
otherwise, it’s an Upper GI like Ann Marie describes
