InactiveHas anyone had increased reflux from prune juice? Gave for constipation and now reflux is the worst it’s ever been. I think there are other factors contributing to this( teething / zantac dosage), but just wondered if the prune juice could be contributing as well.
Ped suggested we try pears instead for the constipation because he is only going when we give the prune juice so it is not solving the problem long term it is just cleaning his system out and then as soon as we stop the juice he stops pooping. This has been going on for 3 days. How have your refluxer’s responded to pears? He suggested mixing with oatmeal cereal but he had issues with cereal and still have not found one that works for him I hate to try it again now when he is already having issues.
Someone else suggested peas. I am leary with fruit because I hear alot of refluxers don’t do well on it so a vegatable might be better. I also don’t love the idea of introducing fruit first and then having him refuse veggies because it it. Do you think that peas would cause him to be gassy though? He already have increased gas because the of the constipation.

Keymasterhave you tried mylanta cherry supreme? it helps with the reflux and a side effect is looser stools…you cannot overdose on it, so you can ‘play’ with how much to give…

InactiveShelly, sorry you are still having trouble! Prunes can really aggrevate reflux. We use peaches to get things moving. Simply thick slids things through too. Also, start with beechnut oatmeal, just a bit in a bottle or two at first. If he does alright, then start thickening with it. We use 2-3 tbs. for a 8 ounce bottle, so not too much. Other moms us 1 tbs. per oz, but that is really thick. Oatmeal gets things moving too. Also, have you tried the gerber white grape juice? Pears caused major blowouts for Ryann just the other day, so maybe it will work for you guys. Occasionally, we buy the bay enimas or suppositories. Doc, said it was ok, not to make a habit out of it, but… seems like the reflux gets worse when things aren’t moving. They are pushing and tightening up their tummies, so helping them get cleaned out once in a while works. Ohh, yeah supplimenting 4 oz a day of water (mixed with ST and oatmeal) keeps them regular.

InactiveWe have a lot of problems with prunes, which are really high in
sorbitol. Pears a pretty high as well and while they were OK at first,
eventually caused a problem too.Marisa is eating oatmeal and peaches and peas but for us, so far,
nothing is working – Marisa only has pebbles/small rocks. We just
started trying white grape juice too (much more gentle than prune or
pear juice) so we’ll see if that works.April 3, 2006 at 8:22 am #5247Anonymous
InactiveAre the peaches lower in sorbitol? Pears were next but I might try peaches instead.
How is Marissa doing on the peas. I got those as well to try to soften the stool. I haven’t tried them yet because we just got back on oatmeal and I don’t want to try two things at once.

InactiveYes, peaches are a little lower in sorbitol. So are apricots.
She loves the peas and seems to be doing great on them but they haven’t helped us soften her stools at all, sadly enough.

InactiveWe started prunes this week for constipation too and it did work great, but his reflux also got a lot worse. I thought is was the teething until I saw your post (thanks). We had tried pears first but he reacted to them pretty fast. We also tried Mylanta in every bottle, but no poop… The Simply Thick did help move things along, but he reacted to that too. Most kids don’t though, so if all else fails, you can try that. I guess we’ll try the white grape juice next and then peaches.
Maybe just switching to a PPI would make a big difference with the reflux and you could continue with the prunes???
