InactiveHi everyone,
Michael’s doctor told me to switch Michael from breastmilk to soy (if he does ok with it) because his height to weight ratio is off and he would like to see him gain weight. This is a new thing for Michael as he has always been on the high end of the weight chart. He said that the soy milk has a lot more calories than the breast milk and will help him gain weight. I figured, I have gone 14 months and that is ok, if it is time then it is time. I was totally fine with the advice. (Not to mention I would LOVE a slice of pizza!
) However today I took away the midmorning snack and substituted it with a cup of Silk and some fruit. He was not happy at all and was climbing me and trying to get “into position” and crying terribly. I put his snack on a table and went about housework and he eventually either forgot or gave it up. (btw he does like the silk and drank it at meals as well) Ok so here is the question… how can I do this without feeling like I am completely traumatizing my son by taking away part of his security and comfort? I know it is for his health, but jeez I felt terrible today! I couldn’t wait for the after lunch nursing just to make him feel better. Is this normal or do I need serious help?
Thanks in advance!

KeymasterI just typed a long response & my computer froze! ERG

it’s late & I have a lot to say LOL- i’ll go fast-
I weaned jonah at 15months & I personally think you’re being totally NORMAL, but what do I know??

what worked for us was exactly what you’re doing- at the time I’d usually nurse him I offered a snack- he could eat dairy so it was a dairy snack but michael can have soy so you can give a soy yogurt (soy baby) and some soy milk, some fruit, etc…just like you did- then slowly replace a nursing session w/ a snack- you can do this for a week or less, it just depends on you- replacing a nursing session with a snack I mean
for me, the hardest nursing times to ‘let go of’ were the last 2 – before bed and first thing in the morning-
I started going to him 1rst thing in the am with a sippy of water when I started this whole process (well even before)- jonah was a pretty big water drinker- didn’t like milk at all until 18 months- but he did eat cheese and yogurt- I know michael can’t have that…anyway, turned out in the morning he’d nurse a little then go for the water and crawl off to play- I guess I was lucky
as I weaned him I wanted to have ‘something’ to remind him (me??) of our special time together, so in those days towards the end, when I nursed him I rubbed his back a certain way- now when I rock him before bed/nap (he doesn’t need to be rocked per se, but I like it
– he goes to bed awake/drowsy – it’s just part of our ‘ritual’) I rub his back the same way (it’s just a second- not a total back rub,LOL) and I don’t know, I think it means something?SO: just take it as slowly as you want to and try and get more food/soymilk, whatever your goal is, into him during the day- I always had a sippy (still do) of water available to jonah throughout the day and offered milk too- I’ve also read of moms adding flax seed oil to the soy milk for added calories and fat…
let me know how else I can help!
~laura
ps: I ate my first slice of pizza after not having any for a year (I wasn’t eating tomato products, it wasn’t a dairy issue) and YUM
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

InactiveHey Laura,
Thanks so much for the info and support. Michael seems to be doing ok on the Silk and seems to enjoy the taste. He Gets real fussy at the time he usually nurses but if I give him a cup of Silk and a snack (fruit and crackers) he seems to be ok. He fills up and then is off and running again. I am going to add the mid afternoon nursing session this weekend. We will see how it goes. I think the whole thing is harder on me!
With giving him the silk and snacks during the day and the up in Prevacid, he is sleeping from 6:30 pm until anywhere from 1-3 am. So not through the night yet but definitely much better than every hour! He is soooo much happier now. My smiley little boy is back. Thanks for the info!
We are also working on the insurance issue, I have the ped GI and the compounder at my pharmacy working on it. The compounder believes that if he has been doing well on prevacid, that we shouldn’t rock the boat… I agree. Anyway I will keep everyone posted! Thanks again!
