InactiveI wrote several posts before and you guys are SO very helpful. Now I got a new problem 🙁
My son is 8 weeks old and has been on Prevacid for two weeks (7.5 mg once daily, powder packets). We did see some improvement recently: he spit up less and eat more. Though he still arched back, but seems not that often during the day.
However, he slept even worse than before he was on Prevacid (we gave him Prevacid around 8:00 pm every day). It took us a long time to put him into sleep, and while he was in sleep, he grunted, wiggled, arched back, and rubbed his face and eyes with his hand like every a couple of minutes (he didn’t wake up though).
It seems that his restless sleep was still due to the reflux, but why it was even worse than before he took the meds? (he used to sleep very well from around 10:00pm-2:00am, and then slept restless afterwhile). I really can’t figure it out.
BTW, he has some eczema on his face, and I guess this contributed to his rubbing of face, but why did he also always rub his eyes? Does rubbing eyes during the sleep has something to do with the reflux?
Please help with any ideas!June 16, 2008 at 2:35 pm #52660Anonymous
InactiveMy ds also had excema on his face and earlobes. We were on Prevacid also with really no improvement. When we FINALLY saw the ped GI, he did a fecal hemoccult test to check for blood in my sons stool. The test was positive and my ds was put on Elecare, which is an amino-acid based formula. It is free of milk and soy. The exema cleared up within a week.
Definitely make sure you are giving the Prevacid correctly. 30-60 minutes before meals and on an empty stomach. I am not too farmiliar with the powder packs, but I would think about switching to the solutabs. From the sounds of the powder packets, the solutabs sound easier to give. I know that with the powder packets it’s better to strain out the beads, since the rest is just to help the beads go down. The beads are the actual medicine. The powder packets are also being phased out.The excema may be a sign of a milk or soy intolerance, which may be why the Prevacid seems to not be working. Your ped can do the fecal hemoccult test to check for microscopic blood in the stool which is an indication of intolerance. It’s easiest to bring a poopy diaper with you (in a Ziploc bag LOL) so the dr has a good sample to test. The itchy eyes is also a symptom of milk and/or soy intolerance. So is the grunting.Good luck and keep us posted.kdub2008-06-16 14:36:32

InactiveKdub, thank you so much for your reply, and I really appreciate it.
We do give the Prevacid correctly, but I will ask for switching to solutabs.
I am also guessing if my son is allergic to something what I eat (I am breastfeeding). I am off milk for two weeks already and soy for a week, but still didn’t see much improvement. Now I am off eggs for two days and will wait to see the effects. If I do the TED, what else should I take out from my diet except for milk, soy, egg, and nuts?
We will bring him to see a Ped GI this Friday and will definitely bring a poopy diaper with us (Thanks for telling me!).June 16, 2008 at 4:02 pm #52667Anonymous
InactiveI never did breastfeed my ds, so I am no expert. But there is so much hidden dairy in everything. You really have to be vigilant in checking labels. Also, there is a great section in here with the title of TED. There is also a TED recipe section. Good luck!

Keymasterthe TED is where you’re down to practically nothing!
I did it…you eat rice, sweet potatoes, free-range ground lamb & turkeyTHere’s a lot more about it in the other forums here and from the Mspi/allergy info(‘main page’): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2697&PN=1&TPN=1you might have to be off of milk (completely- including ingredients like casin, whey, etc) for 3 weeks…but since you’re almost already there, then it’s not so long
