InactiveI was wondering how your baby is doing on aloe vera juice? I just picked some up yesterday and am wondering what dose to give Andy. I can’t find a standard for little people. I am sure the bottle probably has the serving size for an adult.
Also are you treating the hernia by other alternative methods or is your baby doing well with his meds and aloe?
I am considering taking andy back to his chiropractor in hopes of pulling that hernia down.
I picked up a book recommended to me by some other moms. The Prescription for Natural Cures. The authors are Balch and Stengler(a phd and the other a naturopathic doc). They also suggest adjustments as one of the possibilities for treating a hiatal hernia/GERD.
ahh i have kids cimbing over me so i have to go…

InactiveHi there,
Well, I did the aloe vera a while back, I’d say from August 2005 until Jan 2006. I stopped the aloe during a horrible teething attack where he wouldn’t eat ANYthing for about 8 days straight. Then I sort of forgot to go back to it. I just went to our chiro again yesterday, and she adjusted Lucas in several spots, and again encouraged me to use the probiotics — her words were “use the bifidus, bulgaricus and acidophilus and let’s get his gut to heal” She was very encouraging of our gluten free diet, as well. Did I mention that to you in my huge post? i can’t remember. I haden’t taken Lucas into see her since he was 10 mos old. I started up the probiotics again today. Do you know about these? Sorry if you already mentioned it, my memory is gooooone these days

Initially when she suggested aloe vera, Lucas was about 10 mos old, probably around 18 lbs from my memory and she suggested giving him a few drops every hour of the day while he was awake. This was just too much for me to keep up with, so I decided to try it out in different ways. I think I started out with a way low dose and then upped it from there. If Andrew is older than Lucas, I know my guy weighs about 25 lbs, you would surely be safe I would think giving 1-2 tsp two times a day to him. I would start low and see how it goes. I just gave it in a syringe cause Lucas was used to getting meds from a syringe, but I’m not sure how you do your meds. It didn’t taste very good when I tried it, kinda like apple juice but with a bite to it. I am NOT a medical professional, I just have to put that out there, but aloe vera is not a poisonous thing, and is plant based, so it goes through their systems like apple juice or something similar.
On a high dose of Zegerid and the soy, dairy and gluten free diet, Lucas is doing much better. His days have been pretty good since he was about 11 mos old– except for during teething attacks (I think of them as attacks since our happy child dissolves into a crying screaming mess- yikes!) But our problem is nightwakings. I am nursing, so this complicates matters in the minds of many who like to give me advice, but basically he wakes crying/screaming/arching etc. many times a night. With the removal of gluten, this has dramatically changed, but it’s been about three weeks with about 8 hard teething days right in the middle. Hard for me to get a clear reading on teh situation with the teething. Today I did a soy trial for the first time, we’ll see what happens with that.
Let me know how the aloe goes and how it goes at your chiro and what they say about the hiatal hernia. Did your docs say it was a small hiatal hernia? What does size really matter with that anyway? I never got that angle….One of our docs said Lucas’ h. hernia wasn’t that large, but another doc said it was large enough to be causing horrible reflux and his other numbers supported that arguement. Who knows. They didnt’ seem to fully agree. This was a surgeon and our ped gi.

Inactivethanks for replying anne!
we go in on friday to see andy’s chiropractor after about a year of not seeing him.
i will try the aloe for 2 weeks..you are right it is kind of like apple juice with a kick so i add it into 2 oz of apple juice. it is a novelty for my kid since he doesn’t get juice otherwise.
i just checked the probiotics i have in the fridge and they are still good so tomorrow i start him on that since today’s meals are a bit off. he napped for a good 2 hours so he had a late lunch which means not so big of a dinner.
also i may try digestive enzymes once we finish with the trial of aloe. i just can’t do more than 2 supplements at a time. i am supposed to be giving him allergy meds but i am hoping that the adjustments will also help with that.
i have no idea about size being important other than if it is too large it has a possiblity of making the esophagus twist and then cut off blood supply so that would be a disaster for someone’s gut. yes andy’s hernia is small..he said 2cm
my head was about to explode at the end of the day he had his endoscopy because i had questions the doc couldn’t answer since he feels he doesn’t have the whole picture yet.
i know he had irritation to the esophagus so i must tackle that. and i know that he has a hernia so i need to try and find a way to tackle that…i am hoping that the adjustments do the job.
andy doesn’t have any known allergies other than eggs and a suspected milk intolerance BUT we just went the soy route wayy back when he was weaning from alimentum. no problems with soy.
once i feel like his gut may be healed i may revisit the milk trial. first is the egg trial in the hospital.

Inactivei’ve heard that you can’t overdose on aloe vera juice-it’s like drinking water. we put 2 oz in sip cup with soy milk 4 times a day. also we use kidzyme-a blend of probiotics and digestive enzymes. really helps stabilize ds’s system and maintain healing in esoph as well. best of luck.
