InactiveBrian is still on puree food, it is a struggle to get him to eat, and he is sooooo picky, if I find one food that he likes, then one week later he would hate that food, it is so frustrated. His eating has gone down hill the past few day because he is sick. He gets very fussy in the high chair, so I let him crawl around, and I chase after him with food, he opens him mouth, but he holds food in his mouth for a while before swallow it, and it looks like he hates to eat, is this force feeding? I am so afraid that he will end up with a feeding tube someday, when he decides that he does not want to open his mouth and does not want to swallow any more.

InactiveSorry you are having a tough time with Brian. This whole feeding issue is so frustrating.
Noah is still on purees as well and he will be a year old tomorrow. I feel like he will be eating stage 2 for the rest of his life! As long as Brian is opening his mouth willfully, I would not consider that force feeding. I was just talking to my OT about that yesterday because Noah acts as if he could care less about eating, but he still opens his mouth. She thought it is great that he is opening and not fighting or crying. As for not swallowing, we were told to alternate between bites of warm food and cold food. Sometimes their mouth needs to be stimulated so they are more aware that the food is in there. This has worked for Noah when he would let the food sit in his mouth before swallowing. Is Brian getting OT or SLP?

InactiveSharon,
Have you tried just putting a bowl of food on his tray and giving him a spoon? Hailey started truly liking food once she learned to feed herself (with hands or a spoon). She got to a point where she didn’t like to be fed and she would act the very same way that you are describing Brian’s behavior now. I’ve even fed her in the bathtub before. Whatever works. She now eats very good but of course she won’t let me feed her at all.

InactiveLisa – Happy Birthday to Noah! Thanks for the tip. I have been thinking about you and Noah, because our situation is very similar, how is Noah doing these days? I remember you memtioned that Noah was fighting when you fed him solid, it is good that he is not fighting anymore.
Brian is super fussy these days after he was sick, and I try to not push him as much. As for the puree, as long as he is eating, I do not really care. I really want to let the eating up to him now, and if he drop to the bottom of chart, I will give the excuse that DH and I are slim, and we are Asian (my SIL give those excuse to md when my niece did not gain wt. for 8 month).
SLP from EI comes to our house every week, but they have not been very helpful at all, we are in the process to change to another one. If you have any tip from Noah’s OT about feeding, please share with me.

InactiveSharon, is he at the point where you can leave pieces of food around for him to “find” instead of having to chase after him with the food. Not sure if he’s old enough yet, but he might be more receptive to that. I remember with my older one that they reach a stage around Brian’s age where it’s the begginning of the “me do” phase- they want to be more independent even if they can’t. Sarah, my non-refluxer, wouldn’t let me get near her with a spoon after a year old. We just put it all down and let her shovel it in with her fingers…it was a horrific mess and it mortified my mother-in-law, but that’s how she wanted to eat.
Lisa, Happy birthday to Noah!!! And congratulations to you on making it through the first year! Let’s hope that this one is easier with lots of eating in store!!!!!

Inactivesylvia would refuse to eat for me if i tried to feed her. i gave her the spoon and let her do it herself and that was what she wanted.

Inactivewe used to give hannah her own bowl of food and spoon to play with while we fed her with another spoon. it was a mess? but she ate. another thing we did was change it up and have “picnics” on the floor and i’d let hannah bang on pots and pans, play with water, get her hands dirty — while i fed her. this is the way we were able to introduce some new foods without making her barf.

Inactivei forgot to add that hannah was on purees until she was just over 15 months old. at that point, our SLP told us that she was ready to chew…and indeed she was…

InactiveWe had mutliple picnics as well. Very messy but I actually got food in her, puree as well. We also did a lot of feeding infront of Baby Einstein, it’s a horrible habit to eat infront of the tv but it really did distract her so she would slightly open her mouth and swallow.

InactiveStacey, Lori and Christine : I put food in front of him, but he would not touch it. Do you let your daught feed themselves table food or puree food?
Becky and Sue: I am so glad that you saw my post, I was going to e-mail both of you for help. I am at my wit end now, and so desperate looking for advice. Brian fights and crys when I just try to feed him the first spoonful, I hope you do not mind I ask you that have you had these experience with your daughter? If so, what did you do? What was the feeding like when it was at its worse? What did you to make things turn around? I really want to end the feeding as soon as he fights (the first spoonful), but I do not have the guts to do that, I try to get same amount of food into him every meals, which is 6oz of solid and 2oz of yogurt, is that too much for him? Please help!

InactiveSharon, how much formula is he taking and at what concentration? It might be that he is getting too much and so he’s not hungry. Just a thought…
April 7, 2006 at 6:56 pm #5678Anonymous
InactiveLori: he is taking 12 oz of 30cal formula every day.
April 7, 2006 at 9:11 pm #5685Anonymous
InactiveOh wow. He really cut back on the formula (or did you cut it back). I guess you can’t really go lower than that. We’re doing about the same amount. Is he more interested if you feed him in front of the TV? What if your husband does the feeding? Our feeding therapist recently told us to show Hailey pictures of babies eating. We cut some out of a parent magazine and stuck one on the fridge. Every time we pass by, we point it out. I show her the other ones too. All I can say is that I feel your frustration- it’s awful.

InactiveLori: he only knows how to use that old nipple, which I need to reserve for the am and pm bottle, if that old nipple broken, I do not what to do anymore, I try to give him same amount of food every meal, 7am and 11pm 6oz bottle, 11am, 3pm and 7pm 7-8oz of solid, does that sound a lot to you? I have heard lots of parents complain that how little their toddler eats, so does toddler need less than infant?

InactiveNo, it doesn’t sound like too much to me Sharon, but I really don’t know to be honest. What are the solids? Is it jarred purees? I recall you saying a while back that he enjoyed table foods like tofu and fish. Will he eat that?
