InactiveDid anyone else have problems when starting cereal? I’ve tried several different times with my daughter (4 1/2 months old) and each time the cereal has seemed to bother her. Her reflux seems worse and she’s very gassy and uncomfortable. Sometimes it is hard to tell because it could just be a bad “reflux period”. Also, she did not tolerate it well when we tried it at a young age to help out with the reflux. I’ve tried both rice and oatmeal. I know that its not a necessity that she start solids now, but she drinks a lot of formula and seems to be needing the extra nourishment. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!!
Susan

InactiveHi Susan. I first tried Gerber cereal with Emma at 4 months (that was before I found this site and Gerber is a no-no) and it was horrible. I tried Beechnut at around 5 months and still it was horrible. So I gave up and let her stomach rest. Finally around 8 months I put her on brown rice organic cereal and it worked. Some babies just can’t handle it and you just keep trying. What kinds have you tried? maybe the beechnut or organic will work for her.

KeymasterI think you should maybe hold off on solids…
when you do start them, there is no rule that you must start with cereal…

InactiveI don’t know where to find Beechnut around here. I know the 2 main places that I shop do not have it. But I can look else where. I’ll try anything!
What would you start if not cereal? Vegetables- squash, etc… or fruit? Our doctor (that we like) recommended vegetables first. I think “they” change the recommendations every few years. What might be the easiest on her stomach?
Thanks for all the comments.

InactiveEasiest depends on the baby but I think bananas tend to be pretty easy
to digest and not a common allergen. However, I agree with Laura and
would definitely hold off on solids until she’s older. Nothing wrong
with drinking a lot of formula – which has more untrients and calories
than solids anyway.April 8, 2006 at 12:16 pm #5721Anonymous
Inactivemy dd didn’t have cereal until she was 6 months or so due to the fact all the cereals i tried didn’t work well. she still can’t tollerate the flake cereal, but the jar ones. i just did veggies first.

InactiveSusan
I have the same problem with Tyler. I tried Gerber rice cereal at 4 months not knowing about the soy and it made him spit up more and constipated but no gassiness or crying. I tried organic oatmeal cereal next at 5 months – helped spit up but made him scream with gas. I tried organic oatmeal again at 6 months because he was constipated and needed fiber to get bowels moving and it was the same sceaming gas nightmare.
I decided to skip the cereal and move on. We did pears and they went OK. They may have increased reflux a little. Fruit can be dangersous for refluxers – even seemingly non – acidic ones. First many contain sorbitol and the jarred baby food preserves fruit with citric acid. The only fruit that I found with out citric acid is peaches. I am trying those next week.
After the pears I moved on to peas. Also high in fiber to keep bowels moving. They have been really good. No increase in reflux or gas.
I recommend waiting until at least 5 1/2 months. But if you are really desperate to try solids because it may thicken and help reflux and she is always hungry ( Tyler was the same way he wanted solids since he was 3 1/2 months old!) I would recommend trying veggies. I would try based on her bowel movement. If they are a little thick or if she tends to get constipated I would try peas. If they are loose or he tends to get diarrhea then I would try carrots or sweet potatoes. If his stool is usually good constistancy the try one of each for a few days and then mix them together to keep a good balance.
Whatever you do start very very slow. Only give about 2-3 baby spoonfuls at first and then build up from there.
Good luck

InactiveI was told to wait until 6 months before introducing solids. Once I did I found that rice cereal is the best if you are trying to avoid wheat etc. the BEST brand is Earth’s Best Organic cereal. It has no soy,or wheat, nothing that could cause acid reflux.

KeymasterI made a lot of my own foods- see links above- it’s not as hard as you’d think
…for something like greenbeans (veggie that can be easy on tummy), I used frozen organic and steamed them & then pureed them in the mini cuisinart (& added the water from the pot that I steamed them in to get the consistancy that ‘worked’)…April 10, 2006 at 12:40 pm #5791Anonymous
InactiveThanks so much for all of the advice. I really appreciate all of it!! She has had a couple of good days this weekend. Its so much like a roller coaster!
I did find Beechnut cereals today. Now I have a new question. Is soy problems the only reason for using Beechnut? My daughter is already on soy formula (not sure if its the right one for her ,but??).
Thanks,
Susan

Keymasteryes, the reason people use beechnut is because there is no milk or soy…
something like 50% of babies that have a problem/are sensitive w/to milk proteins have a problem/are sensitive w/to soy proteins as well…

InactiveMy daughter has SEVERE MSPI and actually reacted to Beechnut!! The doctor said that this happens when babies are as sensitive as mine. The plant that makes this cereal also makes others on the same “line”. They wash it off in between. I found a GREAT line of organic baby food it is called healthy times. They have a website. I ordered several boxes of the cereal and some of the jarred food. I think Drugstore.com sells it as well and they have the ingrediants listed on there. Most foods do not contain anything but the actual food…no citric acid…etc. I am impressed. Cheap shipping too!! It is the ONLY organic baby food line that NOTHING contains dairy or soy AND the cereal is fortified. Earth’s Best isn’t.

InactiveThanks for the info!!! I use Earth’s Best because it’s the only organic brand I know about. I’d like to see what Healthy Times has to offer.
