InactiveHi–i’m getting more worried about finn’s weight. over the past 6 weeks his spitting up has increased tremendously and his weight gain has slowed accordingly. he’s gained about 13 oz in the past 6 weeks (3-4 1/2 months old)!
He is breastfed and I feed him whenever he wants it. i don’t think i could feed him more often. he has about 30-40 large spit ups per day–literally small rivers and puddles. we had an upper gi (at 2 months) that revealed no anatomical abnormalities.we went to a new dr. (family dr.) today that is referring us to another ped GI.
what do i do about this? any ideas?

Inactivecolleen, while it is concerning that he is spitting up I will say what my dr. told me (that is until McKEnzie really didn’t gain weight). He is gaining…that is hugely positive! McKenzie has never gained more than 1lb/month. She was 7lb 3oz at birth and now is 16lb 4oz at 8 months. I think if he is gaining and growing I would take comfort in that. There is only so much you can do to stop spit up. McKenzie spits up even when she is standing upright. 🙂

InactiveYeah, I would say that as long as he keeps gaining something and follows HIS %tile curve you should be good. Jedd gained immensly slow!!!! I mean really slow. He was 5lbs 15oz at birth. At 6 months he was only 12lbs. That was with tube feedings during the dya and for 10 hours every night.

Inactivethanks for the encouragement emily and jessica. you’re right…i should be grateful that he is gaining at all. it’s just all so frustrating… he was on the same growth curve, but that was over 2 months…but he’s really slowed down in the past 4 weeks…

InactiveMaybe the new Gi will have some better advice. Has the meds. been upped since he gained a little the last 2 months????
With Jedd ANY weight gain called for th emeds to be upped. It made a great difference with him. Even the slightest weight gain sometimes and we had to change the meds.October 8, 2008 at 6:17 pm #57532Anonymous
Inactiveyes–the meds were upped to 30 mg/day –actually he’s just gotten progressively worse the whole time we’ve been on prevacid– but it may just be coincidental…

InactiveI hope the new dosage does the trick.
FYI I hope it didn’t sound like we were trying to amke you upset because we “thought” you should be grateful for the weight gain you did see….Sorry.
It’s just that alot of Dr are jsut glad to see them slowly gaining. That was the case withus. Even thoguh Jedd hovered aroudn the 1-3%tile for height and weight everyone was happy as long as he stayed there.BIG HUGS it really does get better. I promise. I know it doesn’t feeliek it at times but it will. And then you’ll be like me. loving the toddler stage…..(I NEVER enjoyed the infant stage)October 9, 2008 at 9:49 am #57555Anonymous
InactiveI agree, Jessica! Infant stage is for the birds! If you like toddler, wait until like 4 and 5. The humor!!!!!! Sorry, didn’t mean to hyjack the post

Oh I taught K-5 for almost 10 years I KNOW IT GETS BETTER!!!!! LOL They are a trip!!!!OI hate sayign I didin’t like the infant stage but really I didn’t. 🙁 It was a horrible time that I would rather NOT remember. I am eternally grateful that Jedd will NEVER remember it at all. But, alas, that’s what hapens when youcan rock your son at night because they are on a pump, cuddlign is out of the question as wlel because you don’t want to get puked on. You are barely surviving on NO sleep…Need I go on, you all understand.

KeymasterEmily, did you ever find out if there’s anything a breastfeeding mother can eat to help ‘fatten’ up her milk?
I know there are things to eat to help your supply, but is it a ‘wive’s tale’ to say that eating more fat yourself (good fats of course, lol) helps makes your milk more fatty?anyway, colleen, there might be something at http://www.kellymom.com to help?October 14, 2008 at 6:10 pm #57706Anonymous
InactiveI agree with the others…as long as your little one is not losing weight you are ok. My DD is 7 1/2 months and is just shy of 14lbs. She was 7 lbs 14 oz at birth. I noticed her weight gain slowed once I started TED which makes sense because now I have extremely lowfat milk! Are you doing TED?

Inactivei am on TED, however…from what i’ve researched, i don’t think what you eat affects the fat content of your breastmilk… seems to be a myth.
although i do wonder if TED affects milk supply(?). i’ve been trying to take in as many calories and protein as possible.
thanks for all the support. -
