I was wondering when I will know that it is time to take my daughter off prevacid. She seems to be doing better (still spits up and slient refluxs occassionally), but does not have the crying episodes like she used to. I do not want to take her off too soon.

I wouldn’t try to take her off meds until you aren’t seeing anymore reflux silent or otherwise. The reason she isn’t crying is b/c she isn’t in pain anymore and that means the meds are doing a good job. Just my opinion.

Ditto to what Beth said. I didn’t start the wean with my first son til I stopped hearing him burp and swallow (completely weaned by 15 months). And with my second son, I waited til he hadn’t spit up in a LONG time (completely weaned by about 16 months). No hurry in my humble opinion.

what I found was that when reflux was bad, I had to keep on adjusting/increasing/adding meds…for instance there was a time when jonah was maxed out on prevacid and also needed zantac for breakthrough reflux. then, he didn’t need the added zantac…then we didn’t need to keep increasing prevacid at every weight gain…THEN there was a good chunk of time where he was gaining weight but did not need his prevacid dose adjusted- this was a good sign! this was around 9months & we tried a med wean but it was a no-go. he was ready at about 12 months.

Thanks for the information. I had tried to research side effects of prevacid and I found it can cause stomach cramping, so I had started to think that maybe the side effect of that could be part of her problem. She also seems to have a lot of gas. I was just thinking that maybe the side effects could be a part of the problem, but I am thinking she is not ready to come off of the medicine. She will only be four months soon, and twelve months seem so far off. Right now her doctor only has her taking 15 mg once a day. Some days she seems more content than others. I also do not like the fact that she has to be on any medication but I do not want her to be in pain from the acid reflux. I am thankful for this forum.

also most babies do better with the dose split into 2 doses- bcse their metabolisms are super fast & they speed through the dose and then there isn’t anything left to ‘hold them over’

you might find that a dose of 7.5mgs in the a.m. and a dose of 15 mg in the p.m. (yes this is more than the dr told you- have you checked the dose for weight at http://www.marci-kids.com ?) works better…
