Inactivestarting last night, dd has been feeding poorly. she refused to nurse altogether twice last night, then i got her to nurse in the middle of the night when she awoke and was sleepy.. then this morning she fed a little bit, but was fussy, and pulled off. then again today, she fussed after the first letdown and pulled off crying.. we just put her on zegerid 10 days ago, she is getting 10mg twice a day, and that dose is something we did on our own (giving her more), b/c the doc told us to only give her 7.5mg ONCE a day, and refused to up the dose at all until after we see the GI, which is not until 8 days from now.
we stopped the zantac when we started the zegerid, b/c dr. phillips told me that zantac shouldn’t really be taken with zegerid, b/c it blocks the effects of the zegerid..her ped said to stop the zantac b/c both meds do the same thing, and that’s too much medicine for her to be on (although reflux has not proved to be his specialty so far)..oh, and when i said to dr. p that other moms on here give zantac with their ppis, he said “well i would wait at least 6 hours”..
i’m trying to figure out if her dose is too low. wondering what doses other zegerid mommies on here have their lo’s on? should i give zantac in between her zegerid? if she was taking 2ml of zantac BID before, how much should we dose her for the one time dose?
dd is 3mos almost now, and weighs 16 pounds and 10 ounces. always been a great nurser (obviously) until now..
any input from all you reflux mommy experts is appreciated..

January 26, 2009 at 12:17 am #60559Inactivethanks for responding. i took her to the ped’s office, and she was seen by another doc that’s not her ped (weekend). she checked her throat and ears for infection/soreness, and found nothing. said it was reflux-related (the refusal to nurse).

Also, you could try a little Mylanta before a feed and see if that helps.January 26, 2009 at 3:14 pm #60569InactiveWow, 16lbs 10oz at 3 months? What did she start at? My daughter is a month older than you but is only 13 lbs (but I obsess over weight gains and think she should be a bit chubbier). I agree with Naomi. Is she going longer between feeds causing your let down to be stronger? I notice my little one coughs and sputters during our middle of the night feed when I’m fuller.
Or could it be the start of some kind of bug? My daughter just caught her first cold and she didn’t nurse well for a few days prior. Good luck!
January 26, 2009 at 3:39 pm #60571InactiveLOL yes, she is huge. she started at only 7.11. she was definitely a gerdling that was comfort feeding all the time. she is still nursing every 2 hours on the dot, only these past few days, she’s not been nursing well at all.
i don’t know if it could be OAL, because i’ve been much more engorged than i have been lately, and she’s not had a problem. also, she will do this even if my supply is crappy and my breast is pretty soft. the thing about block feeding is, i’m SO scared to try it, b/c if it is the reflux, i don’t want to lower my supply any more by block feeding, b/c as it is now, she’s been not eating much, so it’s only a matter of time b4 my supply depletes (already has some), and i cannot pump most of the time b/c dh is at work, and i can’t put dd down long enough to pump b/c she is so fussy from reflux.
i appreciate the help and responses.. maybe i’ll try giving her a bottle to see if she takes that better than the breast. maybe that would tell me if it was OAL?
January 26, 2009 at 3:53 pm #60573InactiveWell, what is your letdown like? Does it spray forcefully out? Do you letdown multiple times during a feed? Mine would literally spray across the room and I would letdown about 4 or 5 times during a feed, so Ben was getting choked and eating a ton in a VERY short amount of time. Usually he would nurse about 7 minutes and that’s it! He was also as big as your little one.
What I did, was to just take him off the breast at the letdown and let it spray into a cloth until is slowed and then reattached him. He HATED this, but he didn’t choke as much and seemed more comfortable eating afterwards.January 26, 2009 at 4:00 pm #60575Inactivemy letdowns are always strong enough for me to feel the tingling and pressure, but they’re not painfully strong. i have several letdowns per feeding (when she’s feeding normally), but again, it’s always been that way..i know that problems can crop up in bf’ing at any point no matter how smooth the road has been, though.
when i have the morning feed and am at my most engorged and am waiting for her to wake up to eat, i will pump some of the foremilk off before she latches on, and it doesn’t seem to help any.. when i use the pump, i see it kind of spurting out, but i can’t really tell how far it’s spurting since the pump limits that.
maybe i should call the doula/LC from my job who gave me her card.. it’s always been hard for me to ask people to help me, though (except online LOL), and i’m kinda modest, so the idea of her all up in my boob is kinda embarassing, but i’m willing to do whatever at this point. i do NOT want to give up nursing now.

Keymasterhmm…well, since dr philips gave the ‘ok’ to give the zantac, it couldn’t hurt…
