I have been pumping for just over 6 months…as well as supplementing…my LO is just over 6 months and I am wondering if Cow’s milk/Milk period is bothering. I have completely eliminated dairy from my diet…she is very hyperactive, constantly sneezing, watery eyes, has a lot of gas, seems to have stomach problems in general. She has been suffering from reflux since about 2 months old. Should I switch to SOY formula and keep pumping of course as I know milk can really irritate reflux babies.

February 24, 2009 at 10:10 am #61235AnonymousInactiveWell we have switchd her to Soy to see if any symptoms go away. We shall see….so far she has been sleeping a bit longer this mornig..that is a good sign.
February 24, 2009 at 3:19 pm #61243AnonymousInactiveJust in case you didn’t already know…Soy can be very constipating. Hopefully your LO does well w/it. Good Luck!
February 24, 2009 at 8:29 pm #61251AnonymousInactivePrunes can combat that can’t they? As well, Gripe Water is supposed to be great for Gas as well? Or do you just hope the formula works well so you don’t need these? Thanks for your input.
February 25, 2009 at 8:45 am #61259AnonymousInactiveFor some babies prunes do help. But I’ve read of a few on here that haven’t had luck w/prunes or even juices to help combat the constipation. It’s very possible that your LO will do fine. I just wanted to inform you of the possibility in case it happened and you weren’t sure why. As far as gripe water goes, I wouldn’t mess w/that. My DD did very badly on it(the 2 days I gave it to her). Little Tummies Gas Drops do so much better for the gas, but it doesn’t always help every baby. Little Tummies worked great for my DS but not for my DD. Every baby is different. To answer your last ?…I would think that the best would be that the formula takes care of everything(not including meds) and that you shouldn’t have to rely on other things(i.e.prunes, gas drops, etc.)to help make your LO comfy. As long as the soy isn’t making the reflux worse and the meds are helping and you don’t notice any type of allergy or intolerance to the soy, then I would think it would be fine. It really sucks but it’s definitely trial and error in order to figure things out. Hopefully the soy makes a difference!
February 25, 2009 at 10:42 am #61269AnonymousInactivethanks very much for your input…it helps to have others to go to and to see what others have gone through. Last night was brutal…she had major gas pains and I had to hold her for quite a while…so not sure if SoY is the answer afterall. I may switch back to the Lactose Free formula. But she had a very big poo this morning…so it could have been making its way throuh last night which caused her pain….definitely trial and error for sure.
February 25, 2009 at 9:40 pm #61280hellbenntKeymasterI’m not quite sure WHAT lactose free formula is for?
because allergies/intolerances have to do with milk PROTEIN andlactose is milk SUGAR…it is pretty rare for a baby to be lactose intolerant (it happens to people as they get older/adults and can no longer process the lactose…breastmilk is mostly made up of lactose…so babies are made to handle it)something like nutrimigen or alimentum would be a good choice of formula- still contain milk proteins but they are very very broken down- if after 2 weeks (should give every change a good 2 weeks) you think it’s time to switch formulas then after those two it might then be neocate or elecare…these are elemental formulas…February 26, 2009 at 8:12 am #61289AnonymousInactiveI agree w/Laura. If you truly think that milk/soy is a problem for your LO it’s best to move onto nutramigen/alimentum or even elecare/neocate. My DD was diagnosed w/MSPI and alimentum was great for a month and then it all went down hill. She is now on elecare and has been since about 7mths old. She has done very well. For her it took not only a good form of PPI/dose but also formula. So, I really don’t think that the milk sugar is what’s bothering to her. It’s more than likey a milk protein issue. Have you been asked about her bm’s? This can give a lot of vaulable info as to whether or not MSPI is an issue.
February 26, 2009 at 10:39 am #61294AnonymousInactiveWell, prior to all this changing of formulas…we were on good start with the biotics already in them….plus my Breast Milk so she would probably have 5 bm’s a day…some normal some were quite liquid. I brought this up to my dr and she said that she wasn’t concerned unless they are more watery…if there was stool still present they were fine….when we switched her to Lactose-Free (on my own notion as I thought she may have a lactose overload rather than an intolerance (because she wasn’t vomitting or blood in her stool) her poos turned to really thick. They have always been green/yellow but never really constipated…some seedy depending on when she got Breastmilk (BM). But she was still having other symptoms, coughing, runny nose, water eyes and sneezing. Sometimes hyperactive as well. But I think that is just her temperment. So the doc mentioned switching to soy….now I think she only goes once a day and she seems to have the systems. I think switching has caused her duress on her systen causing her this pain.
February 26, 2009 at 10:44 am #61295AnonymousInactivethanks my conern was mainly an overload of lactose rather than a intolerance – hence me switching to lactose free – I have been punping and have been thinking she isn’t getting enough hind milk but mostly foremilk which is why her poos were many a day and sometimes watery – tummy aches, gas and then her other systems.
February 26, 2009 at 12:04 pm #61296AnonymousInactiveThanks everyone for your input…just to let you know as well…that her digestive problems only seem to happen at night…she isn’t that fussy during the day which is weird.
