InactiveI’m so sorry for posting again so soon, but I’ve reached a dead end.
As per my last thread, DD is currently on Losec for reflux. She was on Zantac in January/February without improvement. Is it possible that these two medications might’ve caused her to lose her appetite? Since she’s been on med, she hasn’t been herself when it comes to eating. She wasn’t a guzzler to begin with, but now it’s even worse.
Since last weekend, she has completely refused to eat while awake. No matter what I do, she’ll push it out or fight the bottle. If by chance a drop or two of formula actually goes in her mouth, she’ll gag and choke on it. For a few days, she was taking it in her sleep at least (we were averaging about 15 – 20 ounces), most of which were during naps. Now, she’s stopped taking even those. She’ll barely have an ounce or two and then start stirring from her nap and then push it out or start getting fussy. Even when she’s hungry, she won’t eat.
The ped told us to start her on solids, and although she’s enjoying them somewhat, she usually vomits them out after a while. Yesterday she had 13 ounces in 24 hours. Today so far she’s only had 6. We took her in to check for dehydration, but she’s doing ok so far.
I’ve made another appointment with the ped for tomorrow. I’m wondering what kinds of questions to ask her. She’s already dismissed any GI tests, saying there’s no point in getting them done. Are they worth a try to see what’s going on? Is it worth trying to take her off the medication for a while and see if she improves? What about formula? Could all this be related to her formula? (We’ve tried Enfamil A+, Gentelease, AR, Similac, and Nutramigen.) She doesn’t want anything to do with them.
Please help me!! I’m on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

InactiveI’m not sure how you are giving the losec, but i know it did nothng for Alana. We ended up on Zoton (Aus version of prevacid) which a helpful GP prescribed as th paediatrician wouldn’t! Luckiy we never had any food refusal, so hopfully mums with more experience will pop in soon with suggestions. It could be she is not eating because of the reflux??

InactiveMy little guy is on 30mg prevacid and still doesn’t like to eat. They learn so early that eating causes pain and subsequently decide that they would rather not eat… He’s 5 months old now and still takes the majority of his meals while sleeping. Some people have tried feeding therapy, and for some it was still just a matter of getting the meds right. What works for one child does not always work for another…
Good luck. You’re not the only one!livalil3192009-04-02 15:22:05

InactiveEvergreenie, we’re on the compound losec (liquid with flavouring). It was somewhat under control for the past 2 weeks or so (we started 3 weeks ago), but since the last few days, things have gotten worse. We have a prescription for prevacid now. Hopefully it’ll work better for her.
Livalil, I was hoping things would improve once we start prevacid, but I keep reading babies lose their appetite wiht prevacid. My dd has lost her appetite with zantac, and losec. I’m sure it’ll be the same with prev. Since 11pm last night, she’s only had 4 ounces so far. It’s been 20 hours. Luckily she’s taking some solids, and I’ve been glass feeding her pedialite. She won’t even take formula in the same glass. I can’t help but cry. My poor baby is hungry, but she can’t eat. She looks at us with such sadness when we’re having our meals. Breaks my heart.

InactiveI know exactly what you mean…
We aren’t sure what exactly is going on that keeps him from eating… an aversion or still something bothering him. We are going to the GI next week. The only thing that can be said is that they will outgrow it for sure…
Most babies do wonderfully on prevacid and I have not heard of it affecting their appetite…
Good luck with the prevacid!!! I really hope it helps you!April 22, 2011 at 5:21 am #68224Anonymous
InactiveHi there
Just wondering how you went here? We are in the same position with our 2nd son after going through it with our first (who grew out of it at 7mo).
Our 2nd bub is 12weeks and refusing to eat. He is on neocate for suspected cows milk protein intolerance. I don’t know what to do, but I’m really close to taking him off losec – he’s on 10mg twice daily. It’s doing absolutely nothing and I’m at my wits end. If he doesn’t improve by tomorrow I think we will have to take him to hospital 🙁
I’m worried sick. :(Champagne4lulu2011-04-22 05:23:01
