I hope someone out there can give me some hope. My son is 14 weeks old and struggling. Here is the whole story. Beginning at 2 weeks old I started to notice that he would get fussy about 20 minutes after eating (he was exclusively BF). This progressively worsened over the weeks to inconsolable screaming.
I took him to our ped and she was shocked at his crying asked if he spits up (which he rarely does) and took an x ray (showed lots of air in his gut). She sent us home with Alimentum. We tried the formula for 1 week and I pumped to keep up my supply. He had one good day that week then went down hill. I returned to breastfeeding and stopped eating dairy. Now I only avoided dairy products themselves (milk, yogurt, cheese). I did not read labels etc. Two weeks later the ped prescribed Prevacid because I started looking into reflux and he fit all of the symptoms except spitting up. He would scream for hours after each dose of Prevacid. I think now that it was the citric acid in it. Finally got in to see a ped gastro. and was prescribed Prilosec capsules.
He will begin to show progress then regress. He started on 10 mg then 10 mg 2x/day and now 10mg 3x/day (Marci-kids dosing). I noticed recently when I ate foods that contained milk or soy he had several mucousy green poops. I can not do a TED so we started him on an amino acid formula (Nutramigen AA) last weekend. He seems to be worsening. Also, I realized the Prilosec capsules have lactose. Could all this milk and soy over time be the reason his progress is short lived? Please help with any ideas about what is going on?

Keymastersounds like you want to continue to breastfeed…so what I would do is first concentrate on the medication. I say this because you did not cut out the milk proteins entirely…the dose might be ok, but you need to research on HOW to give the medicine, as this is just as important as the proper dose. it may have been the citric acid, or the aspertame or anything in the solutabs. OR if you were not giving on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later, then it might have just not worked?
as for the capsules they need to be opened up and hte ‘beads’ need to be given with a bit of applesauce on an empty stomach and then follwed by a meal 30 min later…the Medicine Forum has sticky posts (top posts in the forum) that explain the reasons for all of this…the lack of spit-up is called silent reflux. it’s a double burn. it comes up burning and they swallow it back down.get to a ped GI as soon as you can!as for the mucousy green poops if they are all.the.time then you may just have to look into your diet, starting if you want to by just eliminating all milk & soy proteins including hidden ingredients. this will make your milk like alimentum, actually it will make it more like neocate. to learn about the different formulas, got tothe MSPI Forum and click on the sticky there, the ‘main’ MSPI page and look for a link called ‘misconceptions about elemental formulas’ this should help a LOT!hang in there! you CAN do it!April 30, 2009 at 9:15 pm #62347Anonymous
InactiveThe reason I feel that I can’t do a total elimination diet is because I have had my own health issues since his birth. I am 15 lbs below my pre-pregnancy weight. I have had difficulty keeping my strength just avoiding obvious dairy and soy. I tried to find the info ‘misconceptions about elemental formulas” but couldn’t find it. Also, we have been to a ped GI.

InactiveI don’t know how much hope I can give you, but my 5 week old was just diagnosed with silent acid reflux as well. I was going crazy as I didn’t know that the “silent” diagnosis even existed. My son was good for the first two weeks and then around the 3rd week he would go crazy and just cry most of the day. Nighttime (knock on wood) he is ok.
I went to the ped GI this past week thinking he had colic. I don’t breastfeed and we’ve switched to 6 different formulas based on the suggestion of my regular pediatrician. The GI suggested Similac Sensitive RS and prescribed Zantac twice a day. It does seem be working. This formula is lactose-free, so not sure if this has something to do with it. He still screams, but I would imagine it’s because it likely takes a few weeks to show greater improvement. He does seem to be much happier and not as much in pain. I also make sure he sits up for 30 minutes after eating. I bounce him in my arms as well as use the swing which also seems to help. The other thing that has helped is the 5 S’s….check out “The Happiest Baby on the Block” on YouTube. I just started doing it this week at night in particular and it has made a world of a difference. -
