InactiveHi all, well I got my little guy in today to see a NP at an acid reflux clinic at our children’s hospital. What wealth of information! He now is on prevacid tablets 7.5 mg 1x/day. I have to dissolve them at home. She wants me to cut out Milk Soy Protein out of my diet too- I am breastfeeding. The last few weeks have been really hard, he is so unhappy. Naptime is impossible, as bedtime is also getting that way too. He use to be better, now I really am going to lose it. He gets so overtired that nothing I do makes him better, so I set him in his crib. I have even tried to let him cry it out, but I don’t make it past 10-15 minutes.
He has been sleeping in his swing, and am now trying to get him in his crib, but that is really going bad (crib is elevated). Please help, I am really going to lose it, please help.June 5, 2009 at 9:44 pm #62783Anonymous
InactiveFirst off, if he is in pain do NOT let him cry it out… crying makes reflux worse! I rocked my child to sleep for both bedtime and naps until he was 16 months old! 2nd it can take anywhere from 2-4 wks for the milk/soy proteins to clear out of both your system and his so it make take time before you see improvement. Please be careful of hidden dairy (check out the TED links) And lastly I would go to marci-kids.com to check on your prevacid dose (we were on 30mg/day at our highest so 7.5mg/day sounds very low) also keep in mind that you have to give this on an empty stomach followed by a meal 30-60 min later, you didn’t have to do that before when you were on the prilosec compound so please remember to do that with the prevacid or it won’t work. If the swing is working for sleep then I would keep with the swing until you get the breastfeeding and meds fixed. HTH>

InactiveMy advice would be to do whatever you can to get some sleep…Are you open to letting him sleep with you? Sleeping with my babies saved my life. Whenever I would read up on sleep training on the internet and try it on my little one- it was a disaster. Crying it out is not for babies that are in pain…forget about sleep training. Baby is crying for a reason, not to manipulate you. Like the previous poster said: make sure dose is right, give on empty stomach 30 minutes before feed, and make sure you are cutting out hidden dairy from your diet. And it does take time…I saw full results of my dd formula change after 6 weeks and it keeps getting better.
In the meanwhile, do what you have to in order to survive: get help from family/friends, keep him in his swing if he likes it, and stay on these boards. I too almost lost it when my son couldn’t sleep because of reflux pain. It is sooooooooo hard to be sleep deprived…causes anxiety, depression, anger. Hugs to you! You have our support!p.s. my son will be 2 in August and he has recently started sleeping in his own bed all night, and you know what? I miss his midnight visits! Just another perspective!Luzaria2009-06-09 14:51:36

InactiveHi thanks for replying. I am just really struggling right now. Yesterday was actually a better day, first one in 2 months!!!! But today I couldn’t get Bo down for a nap in the afternoon. I rock him to sleep and try and lay him in his crib, and his eyes pop wide open. Then I rock him to sleep and try his swing, and eyes open wide. Two more times in the swing, then the crib, and I am now losing it. I have a 3 and 5 y/o dd’s that are also needing me too.
I hate that my moods/days revolve around my little guy napping etc. Any suggestions?I did let him cry in his crib for 20 minutes today. I never let my girls cry it out.Why do I feel like such a failure right now?!Oh, my guy is on prevacid 7.5 1x/day, I know, it is low according to Marci-kids.June 9, 2009 at 7:42 pm #62851Anonymous
InactiveSorry I didn’t read through everything as I don’t have a lot of time, but I would suggest to do some babywearing? It is saving my sister (she has a 5 month old) and she is so much happier being next to mommy and ends up sleeping a lot in the bjorn (there are a lot of great wraps/etc… LAURA, HELP!) but that is the one that works for her and she has a 14 and 16 year old! Yep, she is braver than I would have ever been! Anyway, that is how she gets her baby to nap and gets a lot of other stuff done as her hands are free.
Hang in there!!!!June 9, 2009 at 8:20 pm #62852Anonymous
InactiveHi again, you girls are awesome. When I feel like I am going to lose it, you are there. Okay, since I have 2 other kids, I feel like I shouldn’t have any problems with this nap thing. But I do. If he was my only I would probably just hold him all the time and let it be. But I feel like I am neglecting my girls when I am taking 3-4 hours just to put him down for a nap. Really, what did I accomplish this afternoon? Nothing. I spent the afternoon trying to get a baby down, let him cry for 20 minutes, and I went crazier hearing him cry.
I am also having a huge problem getting him to sleep in his crib. He only does well, not great, in his swing. Is it okay to have an almost 7 month old in a swing? My dd2 had a milder reflux, slept her first 6 months in her car seat in her crib, and had no problem going straight to the crib. Today he was sooo mad in his crib, he turned around in there and was on his back at the end of the crib not elevated. When I picked him up he burped up his squash (could smell it, not see it)I’ll stop rambling, just need help. Should I try a bouncy in his crib?June 9, 2009 at 10:31 pm #62853Anonymous
InactivePoor baby sounds like he is in a lot of pain!!! Hang in there! Put a time frame in your mind- say 1 week- and tell yourself that if he is not doing better that you will call the doc. It must be really challenging to deal with two other small children in the midst of this. What I did that helped me out a lot during my dd’s really bad weeks before meds and formula change kicked in was to prepare many things I would need the night before so that I could take care of my 20 month old son while basically carrying baby girl all day long. His milk for the morning was prepared in a sippy in the fridge, water in a different one, his cereal already in the bowl, yogurt containers separated in the fridge for easy removal, cut up fruit, formula in bottles for baby, clothes for my son laid out…and I would shower at night so that I could be ready in a snap in the am. We took A LOT of walks in the stroller since baby liked movement. I did absolutely no cleaning except quick clean up after meals. When dh came home, then I would prepare something simple and quick to eat for dinner. It may not be the life you envisioned with your lo but you do what you have to for the time being. When the pain is controlled, your son will be able to nap.
I was and still am EXTREMELY lucky to have my parents and in laws living 10 minutes from me. That means all left overs come to our house, as well as emergency babysitting if it is needed. So, if you can get help-accept it with open arms! I use to try to be super woman but I quit that job long ago.I hope that your little baby feels better soon, but if things are still rough in a week or two, please call your doc so that you can make your baby and entire family more comfortable!!! Best of luck to you!June 10, 2009 at 8:05 am #62859hellbennt
Keymasterack. I feel for you! the dose is LOW (and potentially unstable in that form), as you know, so I won’t go on and on about that…so, in the meantime, yes I would get into babywearing- just wear him as much as you can & if he sleeps on you, fine and if he doesn’t at least you’re holding/wearing him and can do activities w/ the other kids…
I have a babywearing link from groupie intro: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853maybe look for a local group near you (bring ALL kids to the meeting
) just to get out together and then you can find out in a hands-on way what slings might be good for you and your situation…also you can maybe even borrow a sling (many local groups, have lending libraries! how cool is THAT?) to figure it out…the reason I’m going on about babywearing is that really, in my opinion, you won’t see improvement in sleep when baby is uncomfortable/undermedicated…so again, my opinion, rather than focusing your day on a frustrating situation (baby not napping), try finding something that works in the meantime…yeah yeah easier said than done
can we help you find another doctor? help you compose a fax to your current doctor? what can we do to help you more?June 14, 2009 at 8:55 pm #62914Anonymous
InactiveThanks for all the advice. I am still really struggling. He now doesn’t sleep at all. Horrible at night and napping. I might try the family bed. I have never done that, but maybe now is the time. Any suggestions or more ideas are welcome.
Oh also, he now is not eating good during the day – as far as baby food goes. He just seems uninterested in eating, just wants to nurse. I don’t see anymore teeth coming up either.June 14, 2009 at 9:27 pm #62917hellbennt
Keymasterplease consider switching doctors or, at the very least, faxing your doctor?
baby is in pain
…in the meantime, if you feel like taking matters into your own hands:go buy OTC (over the counter) chewable pepcid ac and dissolve 1/2 tab and give to him- give 4 hrs seperate from prevacid(DISCLAIMER: I AM NOT A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL, only a Moderator on this board & posting here for SIX YEARS
)ps: this might help?Wondertime article/colic solved: http://wondertime.go.com/learning/article/interview-colic-expert.html
