InactiveI was wondering if when you started solids if you actually stuck with stage one foods or went to stage two early or when did you go to stage 2? Both my boys have reflux and the stage one foods seem pretty thin for them. We started solids a few weeks back but had to put them on hold because their reflux hit another high. Now that their meds are back on track with helping them I started solids again yesterday. They are doing well with them so far. They just wolfed down a jar of bananas between the two of them and probably would have done another jar if I let them but I don’t want to go too fast. How much solids should they be eating at this age? And does thier intake of formula go down once they get solids or should that stay the same?

InactiveHi. I’m happy your boys are doing better!

How old are they?
As for the solids it’s a good idea to take it slow because some babies with reflux will get worse with solids (mine didn’t, thank goodness).
As for how much, I’d say let them be your guide. They will stop eating when they are full. I’d say make sure they are still drinking 16-20 ounces of formula per day to make sure they are getting the vitamins, minerals, and fats they need. Fat is very, very important for brain development in the first two years and baby food has none! So, formula, breast milk, or whole milk (after one year) is essential.
As for stage two foods, I’ve read that they are the same as stage one except for the following:
Stage one’s are smaller in portion size.
Stage one’s contain single foods. Stage two’s can have more than one ingredient, but they don’t always.
As far as I can tell the thickness is the same for both. Only stage three has textures. You can add a little cereal to thicken them if your boys don’t like the thin consistency.
I think it’s fine to use stage two’s early on, but stick with single ingredient varities until you have tried enough foods to rule out allergies or sensitivities. For example, you wouldn’t give them apple/banana unless they’ve had both apples and bananas separately.

Keymasterjust a thought: I made a lot of my own food- it’s not so hard as you’d think- and that way I could make the food as thick or thin as was necessary…just used a steamer basket over a pot of boiling water and then pureed the steamed food in a cuisinart (you can use the blender) and then I used the water from the pot of water that I had boiled to thin the consistancy of the puree if I needed to- I used (still use & LOVE!) gladware 4oz containers to store purees in fridge and freezer…I made by steaming: apples, pears, peaches, papaya, sweet potato, zuccini, and then I ‘cheated’ by buying frozen organic veggies & treating them like the ‘fresh’ foods: peas, green beans, broccoli…

InactiveLaura-How long do they stay good in the freezer? And did you thaw them by fridge or microwave. We’ll hopefully be starting again soon and because we have to take it so slow, I worry about how to handle giving a pea size, next day tsp, next day 2 tsp etc. Don’t want any of the food to go bad..
Good luck Keri!

Keymasterhere it is
(scroll down) 3-6months: http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/FreezePage.htmyou can use ice cube trays for small portions…
I think I thawed them in the fridge or on the counter top- if I use the microwave, I’ll transfer the contents into a ceramic dish rather than using the gladware plastic container…I don’t have a problem w/ microwaving food for dc per se- I just dont use plastic in the microwave w/ their food…
