My baby was born at 32 weeks and is currently 10 weeks old (only two weeks adusted age). She was diagnosed with silent reflux over a month ago. We started with Losec, seemed to help then got worse within a week or so. So then started on Prevacid and things seemed to get better for about 6 days and then got worse yet again so went back to Losec because this seemed to at least work a little better than the Prevacid. It seems the Losec stopped some of the acid production but made her regurgitate much more than when she was on it. Eventually, however, reflux got worse again. So our ped upped the Losec dosage – this made things even worse! So we are now in the first two days of trying Zantac but I’m afraid this will all happen again! Does anyone have any insight as to why the Losec made her worse? And why she got better for a few days on the Prevacid but got worse again on that? Here’s the dosages we’ve been trying: (My baby was about 6 pounds at the time of starting the meds and is now 7pounds 6 ounces)1st round of Losec – 1ml twice a dayPrevacid – 1ml once a dayBack to Losec then upped it to a total of 2.5 ml per day (this made the regurgitation much worse)Now on Zantac – 0.5 Ml twice per day. Please help! My baby is in so much distress and not sleeping and having trouble eating! I feel like my ped thinks I’m crazy because the drugs have had such variable success.Thank you!Another Question: Does Zantac need to be taken with meals or on an empty stomach? It seems it worked yesterday for my baby when given on an empty tummy but today I gave with milk and she went back to screaming after her bottle.Rmom 2009-07-31 15:50:08 July 29, 2009 at 8:59 pm #63424hellbennt
Keymasterhi & welcome! you’ve found a great place!
the key to all of this is RESEARCH and, of course, support!
the issue might be with the solution/compound, i.e. the fact that your meds are compounded/made into a liquid…so, the issue might not be the meds, but their FORM as well as the dose size…http://www.marci-kids.com is at the FOREFRONT of research of PPI use and dosing in infants/todders. You might want to start there to see if PPI dose is ‘proper’
then, hop back here to learn HOW to get that proper dose, if need be, and what FORM of PPI and HOW to administer…
Prevacid 101(last post on the page): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=1936&PN=0&TPN=1
unfortunately the majority of drs & pharmacists don’t know…babies metabolisms’ are much faster than adults, so the drugs work differently with them…
after medication, you might then want to look at diet…
I have a LOT MORE TO SAY! and most of it is here: Groupie Intro: https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=853
it’s looong, but PLEASE read/skim/scroll through it & refer back to it, as it TRULY will help you!
so glad you found us!
