InactiveMy four month old son Brandon, has been diagnosed w/ GERD and a milk allergy since he was one month old. Has been on many formulas and medicine, and now is on Neocate and Prevacid. Gerd symptoms have been better, but he still is not a happy baby. Between the medicine and the Neocate formula, he should be content, which he is NOT! Brandon is extremely gassy, arching back more then ever and still has occasional vomit (thru nose) and makes a terrible heaving noise with throat. He has been thru many tests (Upper GI, ultrasound, endoscopy and blood work) and all results have been normal. I was wondering if it’s possible for him to be allergic to the Neocate. Does anyone else have a similiar situation or have experienced a reaction to Neocate. Please help. Any info would be better than nothing.
Doctor’s that Brandon has seen: Gastro, Pulminologist, Allergy, ENT, Cardiologist, and Neurologist.Thru Brandon’s eyes……………LIFE STINKS!! My poor little guy!!August 13, 2009 at 1:40 pm #63545InactiveHi Donna, hugs to you. I have an almost 3 year old former MSPI/GERDling and now a 3 week old who is also now on Prevacid & Neocate. We’re still waiting for him to be a happier baby too! Hang in there, it will get better. Can you tell us how much PRevacid your lo is on? Maybe he needs a higher dose. My dd wasn’t happy until she was on 30mg prevacid & neocate, then she was the happiest baby anyone ever met! Good luck and hang in there.

Brandon is currently taking 8mg of Prevacid twice daily. Today was a very bad day, reflux coming up thru his nose again (during bowel movements also). We have a follow up appointment w/ Gastro doctor on Tuesday. I will mention to increase his dose or switch the medicine all togther. Brandon had a endoscopy last week, waiting for the results. It is so frustrating, you hope there is a diagnosis and then you hope that there is nothing wrong. You mentioned that your child was on Neocate, was he also gassy? I feel that the gas has gotten worse since being on this formula. Can he be allergic?? I’ve been told that it is nearly next to impossible. Thanks for your help.

the key to all of this is RESEARCH and, of course, support!
http://www.marci-kids.com is at the FOREFRONT of research of PPI use and dosing in infants/todders.
You might want to start there to see if PPI dose is ‘proper’ (dose sounds low…?)then, hop back here to learn HOW to get that proper dose, if need be, and what FORM of PPI and HOW to administer…

unfortunately the majority of drs & pharmacists don’t know…babies metabolisms’ are much faster than adults, so the drugs work differently with them…
after medication, you might then want to look at diet…

then TELL dr to increase it.what form prevacid? if it’s liquid, chances are it is not being made properly and if it’s not made properly then it is ineffective.if it’s solutabs: are you giving on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later?I would explore medication first, then address formula. it is rare to be allergic to neocate- if it is the neocate, it’s the corn in it…but again I would address proper dosing and administration of the prevacid first…August 14, 2009 at 2:29 pm #63567InactiveHi Donna and Welcome!
I would try to get the meds right before considering the formula. If it is the formula, it could be the corn syrup in it.Also my dd slept better and did better when held or laid upright. Her crib was inclined at a bout 45 degree angle and baby wearing was truly a blessing. I carried her aroud a lot!Hang in there.August 15, 2009 at 2:22 pm #63579InactiveI agree.
