InactiveMy dd has been diagnosed with reflux, but also has some digestional
issues. She can not tolerate any type of formula except one
called Elecare. It’s a hypoallergenic formula made by Abbott
Laboratories for Ross Pediatrics.I know a lot of other infants who have reflux, and they seem to do just
fine with the regular formula, or breastmilk. I just wonder why
Lily can’t tolerate anything but Elecare. I don’t know of any
other babies who have ever had to be on it. Is it that common for
an infant to have problems with formula that severely? Is this
something that she will grow out of? Is there a deeper problem
here than just reflux? My ped. gastro is just okay with keeping
her on it, and he doesn’t seem to be interested in persuing if she has
allergies, or anything else that would cause such a harsh reaction to
all the other formula options out there.I just don’t know where to start, should I just be content with the
fact that she will just be on elecare until she starts solids.
Which, btw, she can’t tolerate either. I’ve tried rice cereal
(she projectile vomits it within a few minutes of eating it) bananas
(give her horrific gas adn belly aches.) That’s another reason
why I don’t know if I should persue this or not.In other words, HELP ME!!! I’m totally lost, and have no idea what to do.

You probably are wondering WHY does my baby have reflux? For Jonah, it was an immature LES (lower esophageal sphincter). He was ‘just born with it.’ For others, it can come from mspi (milk soy protein intolerance). Severe protein intolerances result in eosinophilic disorders. See link below. Others might have reflux as a result of pyloric stenosis or a hiatal hernia. I’m sure there are more reasons, too…
and well, there’s lots more to help you & to provide you info & links to info…

InactiveHi & Welcome
My baby has been on Elecare for the last 5 months. He also could not tolerate breastmilk or any other formulas. Your baby could be MSPI which means that she cant tolerate the proteins in milk and soy. Elecare has no intact proteins so it is really easy for them to digest. Unfortunately food allergies and intolerances tend to also affect babies with MSPI.
Sorry I missed how old you dd is? I wouldnt be in any hurry to start solids. Once she is 6 months you need to start very slowly with one food at a time. You can try rice again, but maybe try it as plain ground rice with no additives. If she still has a reaction then wait a couple of months before trying rice again. My son is 10 months and still cant tolerate rice.
In the meantime if she is happy on the Elecare then stick with it. It is fine to be on Elecare only, she will get everything she needs to grow. How is her reflux, is she medicated? Most doctors wouldnt do any further testing unless she was clearly in pain or still having problems even on Elecare.
Yes it is something that most of babies grow out of. It really will depend on how severe her allergies become. Most babies have grown out of it by 2 or 3.
Sorry for the length, hope I have answered some of your questions.
