InactiveHi,
my name is Arati and I’m mommy to Mira and Milan…..
Milan was dx with milk allergy and reflux all around 7weeks. He was put on zantac and Neocate and all was fine.
Fast forward solids, at 6m, I tried Rice cereal (soy free)…as I wanted to avoid soy b/c of the milk allergy even though soy was not confirmed. We did peas, green beans, oats, squash, sweet potato, pear and banana….giving 5 days between each new food. He did great.
Then in January we get back to California from vacationing for 2m with my folks in NJ.
He’s been sick with a horrible cold for 2+weeks. On Wed we take him to the Doc and on Sunday he breaks out in a rash. Okay fine, maybe he’s allergic to the cheerios (wheat?) take that out, rash is better but still not gone. The Rash is like little red pimples (almost like baby acne).
Fast forward 3 weeks rash flucturates between better and not better. So Feb 1st I took him off solids, b/c I got frustrated and couldn’t figure out what the problem was. 3 weeks later with the rash gone CAP RAST negative for everything, SPT negative also.
I start again. Rice cereal…trailed 2 weeks.fine. Sweet potato same thing.
Go back to green beans next morning rash is back on leg. so I wait then try peas. On day 7 of the trail the rash comes back. take food off a week later when rash is gone we trail squash, and on day 8 (after eating for 7 days) in the morning the rash is back!!!
UGHHHHHHH
I made an appt at Stanford Lucille Packard’s Children’s Hospital. DS has tested Neg RAST and skin test for everything, so no one took me seriously when he kept breaking out in a baby acne type rash when having greenbeans and peas. Until today.
The Dr. dx him with the above, saying it is t-cell mediated. Now that I’ve sat and thought about it a bit, what does all of this mean in terms of him outgrowing his allergy? And when I do trail food, how long should I trail for, since we can now acknowledge his reactions are delayed?
They suspect DD had this type of reaction also, she was never allergy tested. She was on Nutramigen due to Colic at 1m-12m. At one year we tried to transition. We got to 16oz, and then she broke out in little bumps similar to DS. She was successful transitioned at 14.5m. But she had problems with berries until she was 18m. She could have a few but if she ate them too often…like 2-3days in a row, she’d get the most hideous diaper rash. I didn’t realize back then that she was allergic. The ped (old one) just told me she was sensitive. She was fine after 20m.
So if anyone could help me out here, I wish I had thought to ask all this then. I was just trying to absorb it all in.
He’s now 12m old and only eating Rice cereal, sweet potatos and Neocate and I’m crying at the drop of a hat now a days.
DD doesn’t have these issues, what happened to DS????
the allergist is saying no new foods for 6m!!! Yikes, even my Ped was surprised with this. I am thinking since it has already been 3m since we’ve tried pears and bananas, I might try them again in 3more motnhs for a total of being off for 6m.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I am almost wondering if I am trailing the foods too long?
Thanks!
Arati

InactiveHi
My son has lots of problems with solid foods so I know how you feel. One thing that came to mind was that peas are related somehow to the soy family so that may be why there is a reaction to peas. We always trial new foods for 7 days, or if we are re-testing then 3 days. I would not stop trialling foods, you never know when the intolerance will be outgrown. I thought that Tyler would never be able to eat anything but now tolerates 7 different foods which doesnt sound much, but we have trialled about 20 foods. We were told to retry foods every 2-3 months to see if they are tolerated, so I would be trying again the foods you tried 3 months ago.
Good luck

Inactivehi everyone,
Thanks for the welcome!
Amber, can I ask you what Tyler’s reactions were and to
what? Also, did your ped or allergist say 3 months to
retry? I am thinking that the allergist might be too cautious,
but I am afraid to try at this point! Also, why only 3 days for a
retrail? Sorry for the 50 questions, it is just that DS didn’t
react until day 7-8 on the retrails…..so I am not sure what to do!Thanks again everyone.

InactiveTyler has mainly stomach cramps, fussiness, bottle refusal & nightwakings. With some foods he has also had a sandpaper rash on his face, pimple type rash on face and stomach or excema. We see a dietician who specialises in babies with allergies, she suggested 6-8 weeks before re-trying foods. Our ped is alot more laid back and wants us to try alot more foods than the dietician. We are on a waiting list to see an allergist at our local hospital at the moment.
Tyler usually has a reaction on day 3 or 4, apart from zucchini which was about an hour. We normally do a 7 day trial which is a pea size amount on day 1 and double it every day after that. When re-trying food it is 1/2tsp day one, 1tbsp day2 and 2tbsp day 3. I think that when you re-try it is only 3 days because they have already been exposed to the food so the reaction should show up sooner.
I would just keep on with the foods you know are safe and keep trying new foods. If the rash comes back then stop that food and move onto something else. These types of reactions usually dont show up on any allergy tests so its all just trial and error.

InactiveI realize that our case is unusual because Kaelyn was slightly older when she was diagnosed and we have a short list of foods that she is allergic to. However, we were told that we need to wait at least a year before we do any trials. So, six months sounds reasonable to me. However, like I said, we’re fortunate because we’re only dealing with 4 specific allergies, rather than several. Good luck!

Inactivehi Kim
Did Kaelyn test positive via skin test, rast? what were her symptoms? Did you have problems with solids when you started? I am so frustrated right now and depressed for him and myself to be honest.

InactiveI totally understand feeling depressed for them and yourself! Dh and I have both felt overwhelmed by her allergies and the issues that come with feeding her. It’s gotten a lot easier as we’ve gotten used to her special diet, but there are still days where one or both of us get really frustrated by it. Kaelyn had issues with eczema very early on which we now think was related to her allergies. We added rice cereal to her bottle starting at 4 weeks and she didn’t have any problems with it other than some constipation issues. The biggest issue that we had with starting solids was her total lack of interest in them. It took months for her to start eating more than a few spoonfuls at a time. Once she started eating solids regularly, the eczema, diaper rash and fussiness escalated until her doctor agreed to a RAST test which showed her wheat and milk allergies. After a month with no wheat or milk she was still having major problems with eczema, so we did a skin test. We diagnosed the apple and peach allergies through the skin test. Now that we’ve cut all 4 allergens from her diet her skin has almost totally cleared up, she hasn’t had a diaper rash in over a month and she is sleeping better. Dealing with a special diet has been a major pain, but it’s definitely been worth it. That being said, we’re definitely keeping our fingers crossed that she’ll outgrow them!

InactiveI forgot to add that I think that we would have had bigger issues with solids if she had been willing to eat more. Also, her biggest allergy issues are milk and wheat and most of her early solids were fruits and veggies. So, she would have eczema flare ups, awful diaper rashes, and lots of fussiness, but it was really hard to connect them to food because she wasn’t eating much at a time and she tends to have delayed reactions. Plus, she was still have a lot of reflux fussiness as well, so we never realized that some of her cranky behavior was probably due to the foods that she was eating.
