InactiveHi,
My 8-week-old was just prescribed Prilosec. We picked it up from the pharmacy before I started reading here, and now I have a bunch of questions!
First, his dose is only 3mg once a day. He weighs almost 12 pounds. From the marci-kids site, it sounds like he should be on a much higher dose. How do I address this with my pediatrician?
Second, hellbennt/laura suggested that I use Buffer Babies (on another forum, which is how I found this forum). How do I do that? Do I get a prescription for the capsules, then order Buffer Babies on my own? My current prescription is for the suspension.
Third, should I mention to my ped that I read that the pharmacy suspension will become unstable after a couple of weeks? I have an appointment on Wednesday for Caleb’s 2-month visit.
Thanks for any help!

InactiveI would push for a higher dose! That’s really too low- actually marci-kids says that each dose needs to be at least 3.5ml of 2-4 mg/ml (so upwards of 7mg per dose). Many docs don’t know this. Prilosec suspension was terrible for us. Truly awful, it never worked, wasn’t made correctly, and tasted absolutely terrible. I would try to get a script for prevacid capsules at a decent dose, and then call marci-kids and talk to them directly. I don’t have the phone number, I believe it’s on the website.

InactiveThanks. I’m dreading my appointment today. I’ve only seen this pediatrician a couple of times so I don’t really know him yet, but I know it can’t come off good if I sound like I think I know more than him… Thankfully, my husband is coming with me, and he always sounds more rational than I do!
I’m going to call marci-kids this morning and ask them a few questions.
Yesterday was not good, and this morning is not good. Lots of fussing and crying, little sleeping. I’m attempting to go dairy-free starting today.

InactiveI called before my appointment and spoke to David Stock about Buffer Babies. I also printed out a few pages from the marci-kids site. I talked to my ped about my concerns — dosage, stability of the prilosec liquid, my inability to properly space meals and the PPI — and he said he didn’t know anything about what I was telling him, but wanted to read what I had brought. Hopefully he really will! In the meantime, he told us to double the dose for Caleb, since he was heavier than we’d thought (13 lbs 4oz at 8 weeks). He’s getting 3mg twice a day now. Still too little.
Should I just go ahead with Buffer Babies and get Prilosec OTC? Should I push for a prescription for Prevacid capsules? My ped said to check in after 4 days on the higher dosage, so he knows we need to keep working on this.
What do I do about the constant nursing and trying to give him the PPI on an empty stomach and then wait 30 mins? It has been torture trying to do that. And what about when he spits up after the meds? If it’s not pink, does that mean it’s OK? (that the pink meds were already absorbed?)

(& more): https://www.infantreflux.org/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=2841&TPN=1I don’t think you can use prilosec OTC w/ the buffer babies? you need to check on that. just TELL the dr what RX you need. that’s it.
as far as an empty stomach, I *think* it’s 2hrs after you’ve fed your breastfed baby…
as for diet, you may or may not need to address your diet.
