InactiveI just found out about Prevacid going OTC. We’re on solutabs (MARCI kids dosing recommendation), doing great, over feeding aversion, all is well. I’m just curious about the 24 hour part. While I’m not sure I’d risk changing anything since all is well, I’m curious if this can be used for toddlers. Can the pills be dissolved and only administered once daily? I’d love to only have to deal with the medicine once daily! I wonder if it would work or if the kids’ metabolism would require more frequent dosing anyway. I’m curious to see if anyone has heard anything or is going to give it a shot.

InactiveThe type that went OTC are the capsules… all prevacid is “supposed” to be 24hr but b/c of how fast babies metabolize things that is why most of us use it more than 1x/day. The solutabs should still be covered by insurance as they are “specifically designed” for children/toddlers. With the capsules you would have to “sprinkle” them on a tsp or so of something acidic like applesauce and then give and wait the 30-60 min like you do with the solutabs. I would personally just stick with what you are doing if it is working. HTH>

InactiveI JUST saw the prevacid today and was going to post about it. So the OTC capsules are NOT recommended for little ones??? I wondered how that worked…

InactiveI gave Evan the capsules (they were not the OTC but the rx ones – but I *think* all the capsules are the same?! – Beth please correct me if I’m wrong) sprinkled on pears/applesauce starting around 6-7 wks old…until he was able to tolerate the solutabs okay (around 9 mths old).

InactiveHmm…I’m just amazed by the possibilities. If the capsules are OTC and they ARE the same, then can’t we ALL use the marci-kids dose and skip the headaches with our peds??? LOL!
Erin if you started using them at 6-7wks old…does that mean they CAN’T be used for younger babies or you just didn’t? I wonder how it would work with a newborn…Sarah was diagnosed with reflux before we were even discharged from the hospital so I’m expecting it to be the same this time around…November 18, 2009 at 8:55 pm #64591Anonymous
InactiveYes Amy- I was thinking the same thing (re: Marci-kids dosing!).
We started reflux meds @ 2 wks old… he started on h2 blocker but was on PPI by 4 wks old… then on a marci-kids dose by 5 wks old. We started on compounded (4 wks), then solutabs (5 wks), then capsules w/ pears (6 wks), then Buffer Babies using capsules (7 wks), then back to capsules w/ pears (8 wks), then eventually solutabs again (9 mths).
All that to say that they’re still fine for younger babies – just that you have to give them w/ a puree or BufferBabies. For us, I didn’t find that BufferBabies ‘covered’ Evan’s reflux pain as much (eventhough I was mixing correctly & dosing correctly) – & also, I was always 2-3 doses short after mixing (I emailed them about it & they couldn’t explain). I know many ppl have great success w/ it but it just didn’t work for us (well, also Evan didn’t tolerate the corn syrup solids that was the 1st ingredient).
The only thing I would say is that the allergist thinks the reason Evan is intolerant to pears is b/c he was exposed to them @ such an early age. And fwiw, I only gave him like 1/2-1 tsp of pears w/ each capsule (2x/day) so not much @ all. I actually think he can tolerate them now (he’s had them here & there w/ no issues) but they used to cause as bad reaction as milk or soy.
If we go down the same reflux &/or intolerance path with my new guy (& I’m just assuming me are), I am planning on starting w/ solutabs (if this little guy will tolerate them) b/c a) they are easier to give & b) no worries about early exposure to a puree… but we shall see ;). I feel confident that my ped will still prescribe marci-kids dosing if I push him b/c he’s still writing the script for Evan.
Sorry for rambling 🙂

InactiveWe don’t have the same ped anymore…so I’m nervous we’ll butt heads with the new one. I’m hoping my knowledge and experience with Sarah will give me a step ahead with the new doc. I can hope, right??
We used zegerid so I never had to deal with the 30-60 minute/empty stomach rule…If we go the solutab route this time I will definitely be looking into Buffer Babies!I don’t like the idea of having to introduce a puree so early either…it’ll just be nice that other families with older children can use the OTC capsules!November 18, 2009 at 9:26 pm #64595Anonymous
InactiveAmy, I think Erin covered your question to me pretty good. The good thing about solutabs if they can tolerate them is that they taste great… I tried one of Cooper’s just to make sure, but since Sarah did so well with Zegerid and you already know how to mix it etc and you don’t have to time it I would try to get put back on that if you need it! I am trying to stay really positive that we won’t be going down this road in a few more weeks, but am realistic as well that we probably will be! But it couldn’t hurt to have some of the capsules on hand while you are figuring out the dosing! You could even try to mix with with alittle diluted juice and give that way, just make sure they ( the med beads) don’t get stuck in the syringe! Amy you are so close now… counting the days with you!

Keymasterchiming in for bufferbabies/caracream:
this can be used w/ newborns, so if the OTC capsules are the ‘same’ as the rx then yes you can make a prevacid compound right in the comfort of your own home 😉 (by using the capsules and bufferbabies- marci-kids would tell you exactly how to do this)although if one is already comfortable w/ zegerid, then of course that is an option as well! there is no timing around meals w/ bufferbabies or zegerid

Inactivei didnt read all the responses.. so sorry if i repeat anyone.
i saw them too at walgreen.. its the capsules. and we used capsules with shane sprinkled over applesauce .. once he went on solids. it worked well.. .. so i would def try it if there areissues with getting the right amount prescribed or if you are having insurance issues. -
