InactiveI am thinking of switching to Neocate because Alimentum is not working. Anyone have success stories? How long did it take to see a difference?
TIA!November 25, 2009 at 5:26 pm #64714hellbennt
Keymasterevery switch you make takes two weeks; you need to give it the full two weeks to see the full effects.

InactiveNeocate was most of the answer for both of my boys and I would say go for it! Yes, 2 weeks was the magic amount of time for us, I have heard of some a bit more and some a bit less, but I would give it at least that to see it get better. FYI, as if it was possible, both of my boys were worse at first as I think their bodies were adjusting and getting rid of the old stuff out of their systems, but that was the first week or so and then slowly better so if you notice your DS getting worse at first, please stick with it and give it the full two weeks.
hang in there!November 28, 2009 at 9:16 pm #64739Anonymous
InactiveI couldn’t agree more with Ann Marie!
It took about 2 weeks for us (maybe a tad longer) for the Neocate to heal internally. At first I would have sworn he was worse b/c the Neocate IS thinner and he was spitting a bit more, but as his gut healed, he refluxed less, slept better and had less gas, pooped w/o straining and turning red, etc! After that, we never looked back!!jilly782009-11-28 21:17:08

InactiveThank you guys! I’m just not sure if it’s absolutely necessary to switch to Neocate. It is sooo expensive and I think we will surely go broke! I will do it if I have to. Anything to make my son more comfortable. He has no mucus or blood in his stool but he strains and grunts while going but his poops are loose.
Green, very loose and very smelly! This is normal on Alimentum right?November 28, 2009 at 10:59 pm #64745Anonymous
InactiveWe have had moms on here that have put their babies on Neocate based solely on discomfort and grunting!! Some babies grunt just to grunt, this is true, but excessive grunting along with an uncomfortable baby + lots of crying = intolerance!! there was a thread/post on this somewhere and I will try to find it for you!! 🙂
I am not so sure that green/runny poo is normal really. And foul smelling can def signify intolerance.Have you tried calling your medical insurance to see if there is any way they would cover elemental formula (either Neocate or Elecare) if the baby had a medical necessity? I know some people have been able to get coverage, it’s worth asking about!!

InactiveSo glad to read that some of your LO’s got WORSE initially on Neocate! My 3.5 month old just switched to Neocate and Prevacid Solutabs. He was on Alimentum and compound Prevacid. Today was day 3 and it was a horrible day! It was as if he had no meds at all. He had to be held all day, was so exhausted but wouldn’t sleep, and took FOREVER to get to sleep. All he did was cry, arch, crunch, moan, and grunt! My GI only gave me 2 sample cans and said to give it just 3 days and I should be able to see a difference. I’ll call him tomorrow and request giving him at least 2 weeks. It’s just so frustrating and I feel so bad for my little baby. I wish I knew what was hurting him all the time…if it’s the formula or the new meds, or something else!
It gives me a little more hope that it took a little longer to see improvement in your LO’s!December 7, 2009 at 11:06 am #64978Anonymous
InactiveWell it looks like we’re going to get in the insurance battle as well! Supposedly our insurance won’t cover it because it’s over the counter?? Ughh..I have a lot of research to do!

Inactiveyeah, our insurance will cover it only if it’s tube fed! I know I can write letters and appeal. It is just ridiculous the things you gotta do about this. It should be mandatory to cover it for babies.

InactiveOk-for those whose LO’s got worse initially on neocate…it really took up to two weeks? We’re on day 5.5 and he is so BAD! He screams all day unless he’s held, will only drink a few ounces at a time, is extremely hard to get to sleep (I have to hold and bounce/rock him until he’s totally out before I can put him down…which takes at least a half hour), and is waking more at night. It’s normal not to see any even little improvement yet? We also started Prevacid solutabs instead of compound on the same day we started Neocate. Then I also wonder if those are making thing worse too??
