InactiveHoping someone can shed some light on our Prevacid problem…..daughter #2 has been suffering from reflux since about 3 days old….same scenario for daughter #1, so I wasn’t overly surprised– just sad!
Anyway, daughter #1 did great on Axid twice daily spaced between Prevacid solu-tabs twice daily (she was also dairy and soy intolerant)….she came off meds at 8mos. and we’ve never looked back (and she lives on yogurt, cheese and milk!).
So of course I asked for the same with daughter #2 (b/c if worked for us, and I was familiar with it)…..axid worked ok for the first 2 weeks or so, and we got an Rx for Prevacid solu-tabs…tried them once and she seemed worse (doc ‘warned’ of rebound effect that she said wasn’t known when first daughter was on them), so we stopped after 2 doses…..saw the GI doc and they wouldn’t prescribe anything but the solu-tabs, so we’ve tried again and I know I’m not imagining that she is WORSE…..crying out in pain after dosing, seems to be having more ‘stuff’ coming up (I can hear it….she and her sister are ‘silent’ refluxers, no spitting), sleeping is worse, etc.
Anyway, I’m waiting for BufferBabies to arrive, but in the meantime, I hate to stop it cold turkey again….has anyone used the new Prevacid OTC caps and if so, can someone give me pretty specific directions on how to administer with a puree….also, is that even possible with a 3 week old (will be a month old in 3 days)?
Thanks so much for any help….the pain she is going thru is absolutely heartbreaking (I swear I don’t remember it being this bad with dd #1!), but thinking I’m giving her something (solu-tabs) that may be making it worse is unbearable!!!

InactiveI am new at this so I don’t have a lot of experience, but, I do know it takes a couple of weeks for prevacid to start working effectively, and I found out from Dr Phillips through Marci Kids that the solutabs do not absorb well in an infants stomach.
We are switching to zegerid tomorrow. You can google them and find information.
Have you tried giving her mylanta cherry supreme between doses as well? I know my pedi cringed when I told her I was giving it to my LO, but it helped us. We are hoping the new medication woll work well enough to not use it.December 4, 2009 at 6:08 pm #64917hellbennt
Keymasterit most likely isn’t the solutabs? or, at least it doesn’t necessarily ‘have ‘ to be the solutabs. it’s that it can take up to 14 days before you see the results of the solutabs- it can take that long sometimes (it was day 12 for my son) before you see the effects…so, it’s as though your baby is ‘only’ on the axid and, if it wasn’t working, then it’s as if your baby isn’t on any meds at all…
are you giving the solutabs on an empty stomach, followed by a ‘meal’ 30 minutes later? that’s how to give them properly.
also, check http://www.marci-kids.com/dosing.html for the proper dosing of prevacid…and there’s prevacid 101, last post on the page, and the link also has a link to figure out ‘proper’ axid dosing as you wait for the prevacid to ‘kick in’ :
