Inactivemy daughter was born on 10/28. We began having reflux issues at about a week old. She was exclusively breastfed until recently. We tried zantac for 3 weeks, no change at all. Back to her pediatrician, she is now on prevacid (compound). 1 teaspoon one per day, since Wednesday. I am also pumping and thickening the milk w rice cereal and bottle feeding her the majority of the time. That does seem to be helping slightly.
So, a few questions…
1. She now has frequent smelly gas. is this the rice or the prevacid or something else?
2. her dr recommended frequent burping…..what is the best way to burp a reflux baby? she spits up almost every time she burps…..
3. has anyone noticed a difference with a certain bottle? i am using the bottles and nipples that came with my medela breast pump, but would try any kind that could help.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Keymasteryou don’t have to stop breastfeeding. thickening is controversial and can add added stress to baby’s already sensitive digestive system. also the added cereal is NOT doing anything- there are enzymes in your breastmilk that break down the cereal- the enzymes are called amalyse…

InactiveMy daughter was on the oral suspension of prevacid and did not tolerate it well at ALL!! They changed her to the solutabs and they seem to be much better. Have you tried infant drops for the gas? Rice has never made my daughter have smelly burps, what you could be smelling is the acid still. They say it takes 2 weeks for Prevacid to start really working.
When burping my daughter I do it over the shoulder. Mainly because burping her on my lap puts pressure on her belly. Her legs propped like that makes her stomachs squish up and the acid come up quicker, at least on my shoulder she can stretch her legs and belly out. I burp every 1/2 ounce…or at least tempt to…I love love love Dr Browns bottles. That is what I have been using and they definitely help. I heard that drop ins work as well. Are you propping her up after every feeding. I find this truley does help my daughter. Best of luck!December 7, 2009 at 7:41 am #64972hellbennt

InactiveNow a follow up question…I have read that many people also use Mylanta Cherry Supreme….how much and how often do you use it?
December 7, 2009 at 5:51 pm #64990hellbennt
Keymasterit can be any kind of mylanta cherry supreme, meaning it can be a store brand kind – the MAIN thing is that the version you buy should not have any aluminum listed in the ingredients- that’s why we all say mylanta cherry supreme, but there are those who have found various other brands that do not contain aluminum.
it is the adult kind; there is no baby/child version.give in 1ml doses, up to 5mls during the course of a day (24hrs).
if you see loose stools, ‘just’ back off
as for the prevacid suspension:
my educated guess is that it is NOT being made properly and therefore is not an effective medicine.
my OTHER educated guess is that the dose is not proper, either.
please read Prevacid 101 to learn more (last post on the page
)

InactiveAdding anything “foreign” like rice can cause smelly gas… their system just can’t tolerate it at that age. Also, if she’s at all constipated, the gas will be smelly.
