InactiveMy first son Ethan, now age 2 was diagnosed with reflux when he had a moment
of apnea in the well nursery, turned blue and was sent to the NICU. As
new parents my husband and I were just happy to hear it wasn’t anything
too serious. It was so long ago now I dont even remember what test
they did to determine it was reflux. My 3 month old Aiden never had any
breathing problems but exhibited some of the same painful signs as my
first son, but he also has symptoms my first son didnt have. Since we
brought Aiden home from the hospital he has had this weird cough,
almost like he is choking or trying to clear his throat. Sometimes I
can hear him reflux and swallow and then cough.I explained this to our pediatrician and he was given Zantac. No tests to determine reflux were done. The zantac kind
of seems to help but has never gotten rid of this cough/choking thing.
Every time we see our pediatrician I bring up the coughing and
choking. The doctor listens to his chest, looks at his weight gain and
says he is fine. We just had his 3 month appointment this past monday
and she said he looks healthy. Im including a youtube link to a video
I took tonight. Aiden has been doing the coughing/choking thing much
more often, almost off and on the entire time he is awake and he has
been miserable.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9k8w7cENQU
Does this cough he is doing look like it is reflux related? Sometimes
he does this while sleeping as well. He is on 1.3ml of zantac.December 31, 2009 at 4:57 pm #65317Anonymous
Inactiveto update I brought Aiden to the doctor and after watching the video the ped on call said yes its reflux but she was unwilling to prescribe any other meds and wants us to go see a pediatric pulmonary doctor.
I also emailed Dr. Jeffery Phillip from marci-kids.com and he was very helpful and emailed me back several times answering questions. He watched the video, also said he thinks its reflux and that Aiden needs something stronger then Zantac. Since I couldnt get a Rx for what he recommended he told me about the bufferbabies and prevacid. We are going to try that and maybe if that doesnt work I’ll call the pulmonary doctor.

Inactiveawww i am so sorry he is going through that! i am not sure what it is.. because i never saw it before.. almost looks like he is gagging as well.
i would request to go and see a pediatric GI as well as the pulmonologist. The pulm. is a good idea as well. We see one.. and thankfully she is knowledgeable on reflux as well.. and seems to think they go hand in hand at times. My daughter has a lot of congestion and we think its from the reflux. Its there ALL THE TIME.. on a lot of meds or a little. But Your son looks like he is sooo uncomfortable!!.. Hopefully the meds will help his discomfort!please update.January 3, 2010 at 7:50 pm #65336hellbennt

InactiveWe now have a Rx for Prevacid. I put a call into Aidens ped monday and she called us back. She had his file and saw that we had gone in and seen another dr on her day off. She gave us a Rx for the Prevacid. Hopefully we see a happier baby soon!

InactiveWe have a happy baby! What a difference! No more coughing/choking and crying! He is happy and cooing and smiling. He does spit up a bunch but he does it with a smile so we dont mind.
We never did go see the pulmonary doctor.

InactiveWell the happy baby only lasted several days until the prevacid compound stopped working. The cough and choke came back but it happened right before the weekend so Monday we saw a GI doctor who gave an Rx for the solutabs. Ive read everything on Marci-Kids.com and have emailed back and forth with Dr. Phillips (wonderful that he takes the time to do that).
I had requested a bufferbabies kit and at first was told that since it seemed we had the reflux under control they would wait on sending it. I was about to email again and request a kit but strangely one arrived yesterday! Which actually is great because Dr. P said the solutabs have a 50/50 chance of working.
This entire process has been very frustrating trying to get Aiden’s doctors to listen. The GI seemed in total agreement about not compounding prevacid and said the pharmacy should have known better. I mentioned Zegerid but the GI cut me off and said he likes the solutabs. What is it that doctors dont like when patients or parents ask for a specific medication? I dont get it.
